The format that we will utilize this morning in the literature panel is that we will begin with the three gentlemen sitting behind me in the platform and I will introduce in a minute. Then we will invite the panellists to respond to some of the questions that will be brought up by them. Then we will go on for an hour from now. Then we will stop and then the art hour will begin.

Behind me are seated right at the center Claudio Gutiérrez, who is the rector or president of the University of Costa Rica. He is here as a visiting philosopher in the Philosophy Department for two weeks, invited jointly by the Department and the Institute of Latin American Studies. We have availed ourselves of his presence here today to bring his expertise not as a man of letters or as a man of art, but as a philosopher. I think that it's very important to have this synthesis that a philosopher can bring to these symposia.

Seated to his right is John Coleman, professor of Latin American literature at New York University, frequent contributor to the New York Times Interview, a member of the Center for Inter-American Relations. Sitting to the left of the chairman is Ronald Christ, also from the Center for Inter-American Relations in New York and editor of Review 75.

The format that they have chosen to use this morning is that Professor Coleman will begin bringing up the most salient points of the first panel discussion, the first day's panel discussion in literature. Claudio Gutiérrez will follow bringing up the most salient points of the second literature panel. Then Ronald Christ will take over and we'll throw questions that are addressed not to specific members of the panel, but at large so that any member of the panel who wishes to address himself to the questions raised by Christ may do so.

Since we are hoping to have as much input from the members of the panel as possible, we will try to limit the responses to two minutes each. Then we'll go on until the hour is up.

You have the floor.

My report is a kind of journalistic account, and also a possible gloss on this partial account. I take as the motto of my report, my journalistic exercise, the epigraph Julio Cortázar added at the beginning of his novel Hopscotch. The quote is from Jacques Vaché: “Nothing kills a man more than having to represent his country.”

I believe I saw, in the contributions and improvisations of the first day, a clear conflict between the rights of autonomous imagination and the totemized structures of power. In the sense that the contributions, on the one hand, leaned toward a vision of criticism as a form of dissent from norms—a dissent that ultimately leads to otherness. The key word in that sense was likely the word dialogue, which was a key term on the first day.

On the other hand, other critics tended to view literature—especially Latin American fiction—in terms of literature’s photographic or representative value. Some critics tended to consider literature solely for its mimetic value, or more crudely, for the possible message contained in the literary work. What I saw, in terms of the main polarization of the first day, was a kind of conflict between critical methods: some methods divorced the examination of the literary work from its social context; others insisted on examining the literary work as an example and product of the society in which it was born.

I also noticed that some critics viewed literature not only for its mimetic value but also through what I’d call the “That's the way it is” syndrome. That is, the literary work was valued for its truthfulness in reflecting a political or sociological situation in a given country. I also saw that some critics were still operating with the precepts already set out by Taine in the preface to his History of English Literature—that is, the patterns of race, milieu, and moment.

On the other hand, I saw some critics reject the use of literature as credible evidence of a political situation. Some critics denied that a literary work could serve as a mirror of a particular society. Some denied the representative intention of a literary work. Some, I believe, viewed literature and its practice as something univocal—as literature with a message—that, to me, seemed to lead toward a kind of updated costumbrismo (literary depiction of social customs). I think other critics sought at least to imagine the possibility of a literature that wasn’t, let’s say, typical literature.

As you surely remember, there was a long discussion during the art and literature symposia both for and against the pursuit of identity. In that sense, I believe some critics were left fairly convinced that a national identity in a literary work—or in the characters within that work—does not exist.

At the same time, some critics working from an openly socially engaged position leaned, on the one hand, toward a naturalist approach using naturalist methods of criticism. On the other hand, a critic like José Miguel Oviedo emphasized that a literary work must necessarily be a work—and that literary criticism must be an exercise in discord.

Now, in the contributions of Monegal and Paz, I saw especially the insistence on perspectivism in reading the text—on the famous multiple possible signs that every literary critic must glimpse within the literary work. A reading, then, of multiple voices, not of a single voice or message. I saw that critics like Monegal and Paz emphasized various levels of reading and, furthermore, leaned toward the New Criticism tendency, rather than a socially committed one. I am, as you can tell, grossly oversimplifying.

In Paz’s contribution, I noticed above all that he lamented the lack of critical spaces in the analysis of Latin American literary criticism. He lamented the absence of critical circles like those that produced a Taine, an I.A. Richards, or a [unintelligible]. Clearly, Paz misses the kind of books that place other books and novels into a coordinated system—like an Alexander Calder mobile—so that each book, placed in such a structure, can illuminate another book through a series of connecting threads.

Paz lamented the lack of critical thinking. “Why is there none?” asks Octavio Paz. “Why is there no critical thinking?” I believe the key word here is one of Paz’s favorite terms: rupture. That is, according to Paz, there has been no definitive rupture with the model cultures that had psychically smothered traditional literary imagination in Latin America. In other words, political independence did not necessarily lead to psychic independence.

From that, I believe, comes Paz’s allegiance to Dada and Surrealism as abnormal elements that effectively undermine and topple totemized structures. In Santana’s contribution, I recall the mention—perhaps the quote—of the use of kitsch as a way of undermining and overthrowing a model culture. Furthermore, if I remember correctly, Octavio Paz emphasized that mere satire is not a sign of rupture but a sign of hardened aesthetic conformism. That is, I saw in this polarization of critical methods on the first day a push both for and against mimetic impulse.

Now, I ask myself: I found certain things lacking. Above all, I missed an analysis of the critical language used by the critics themselves. For example, I would like to know why the adjective personal in Spanish has a positive value when the subject is a literary work. That is, I would like to know why criticism still uses terms like reality and fantasy, when such terms would provoke laughter from any professional critic in other languages.

In other words, I’d like to see the dismantling of the easy antinomies of criticism—those that hinder our multifaceted and plastic examination of literary works. I would like for someone, at least, to consider the possibility—within contemporary Latin American criticism—of imagination unbound from society. That is, autonomous imagination that could give rise to an American literature—not Spanish American, not North American—but American literature of subversive, anarchic, and unsystematic imaginations, like those of Henry Thoreau and Macedonio Fernández.

As you can see, I’ve overlooked many things I didn’t quite understand, but I just want to leave you with my sense that, truly, on the first day a real dialogue between critical systems was established. And to honor what I consider to be dialogue, I’d like to strike out the word dialogue and instead insist on the word otherness, because it is through otherness that we arrive at a true identification and a profile of human beings and culture. [applause]

I choose as a starting point for synthesizing yesterday morning’s roundtable a statement that is apparently uncontroversial: all literature transmits not one, but many messages. Some of these messages may correspond to social criticism. In Latin America, these messages can be amplified by the institution of censorship. Thus, the most trivial text becomes important.

The role of the literary critic is to decode all those messages, which builds a bridge between the topic of this second roundtable and the topic of the first. Now then, it should be noted that some of those messages are predominantly educational, propagative, or proselytizing in nature, while others are literary creation in the proper sense.

Here, one can take a clearly dualist position: a given work of art is either one or the other. Or one can take a gradualist position: works are placed along a spectrum between the pole of art and the pole of propaganda. Finally, one might reject the antinomy altogether and attribute it to an abstractionist illusion.

Practice and contemplation interact in the human being of flesh and blood, just as the individual and the social interact in the concrete person. In any case, an urgent problem remains: do the messages transmitted by the work contain something irreducibly literary, or are those messages nothing more than a transcription of the content of other disciplines?

If the object of literature were to describe reality, other disciplines would fulfill that function better: the natural sciences, history, sociology. But literature also founds realities. It creates cultural objects that, to some degree, become part of the social environment. When literature turns the messages of other disciplines into literary codes, it disorganizes those systems of signifiers with the intention of recomposing them into its own system.

Through images, literature rediscovers the whole human being in the totality of his or her meaning. This is one answer to the problem. Let’s call it the thesis of the autonomy of literature. But one can also approach things differently.

To say that literature is irreducible assumes that the text can be separated from the context. This is nothing more than an illusion, a product of the literary critic’s professional deformation. It is never true that a text exists without context. We may assign it a context that is very immediate to us and with which we identify, and therefore we are incapable of perceiving it. The context is there. I, the critic, am myself equipped with a toolset that makes me see reality in a certain way, conditioning me in a thousand and one ways.

This borrowed context has come to replace the original context. The theoretical context replaces the historical one. The real context can be conscious or unconscious. So can the theoretical one. If, from the examination of a secondary poet’s work, the ideology of an era can be deduced, what’s so strange about the idea that the critic might be unaware of his own unconscious assumptions? A literary psychoanalysis is possible—both individually and socially. In any case, it seems undeniable that the works of many great Latin American writers have been conditioned by historical phenomena—brutal breaks in institutional continuity.

It’s also possible to challenge the thesis of literary autonomy from another angle. Literature is made in a language. Now then, is the medium we use autonomous? Who writes for me when I write? Language is a social product, and in our countries, it is subjugated by oppressive powers. From this, we might draw pessimistic conclusions: literature will not overthrow imperialism. A thousand novels are worth less than a political party.

Or we might be optimistic and ask, with Paulo Freire, for example, about the possibility of a liberating word—or a word in the process of liberation. In any case, it seems that the literature of a developing country—that is, a dependent country—has only two possible paths: to be alienated literature or to be committed literature. The question, as you can see, is not settled. I invite you all to continue the discussion. [applause]

Perhaps because the conference is coming to an end, I was thinking about the last words last night, and I remembered the last words of Gertrude Stein. Do you remember that when Gertrude Stein was dying Alice B. Toklas asked her, "Gertrude Stein, what is the answer?", and Gertrude Stein turned her head, perhaps for the last time, and said, "What is the question?"

Symposia are expected to come to conclusions, to answer questions. In my experience, they never do. Or at least the good ones never do. Instead, they design or redesign the questions. I don't know the answer to any of the questions that have been asked or even to any of the questions that have been implied during the last days. I have no statement to make. From my vantage point, from a point well outside of the circumstances, I have some questions I would like to post. Certainly not the question. Nearly some introductory questions.

At first, I thought my basic question was one raised by the symposium. What is the status of literary criticism in Latin America? No direct answer to that question has really been offered. As I've listened to the various speakers, to the various papers, I've realized that perhaps no question was offered, because the question itself ought to be rephrased, possibly in this way. What is the status of the literary criticisms in the Latin Americas? Appropriately, considering the co-sponsorship of this conference, the question ought to be plural.

My second question grows from this first one. Years ago, a famous North American critic is set to a remark that he had read Latin American literature and found that it was only of anthropological interest. Clearly an apocryphal story. If it isn't, it ought to be. I wonder if we can say the same thing of Latin American criticism today. Dore Ashton quoted Borges' important essay The Argentine writer and tradition, which itself is a manifesto of the universal interest of Latin American literature.

I wonder if we should now recall Borges' essay Kafka and his precursors, where Borges argues that a writer creates his own precursors. Is it possible that the dialogue, which has so often been spoken of in this room, can in part be achieved by critics creating their own precursors? That is, by entering more fully into the historical international community of criticism, where Aristotle's poetics for the English men is a text in English, where Cantillon for the French men is a text in French.

This question leads to another one, which is a very difficult and even I can say an agonizing one for me. As an editor of review in English devoted to Latin American art, I read many essays from acknolowged, respected, and even brilliant Latin American critics. Many of them we have to reject, because when they are translated into English we find that the substance has almost completely evaporated. That might suggest a very easy solution. It might suggest that one criticism is good and right and one is wrong and bad. Clearly, that is not the answer. It is quite too simple.

The question this situation leads to is fundamental. What is the appropriate medium of criticism? When a literary critic writes, his medium is identical to his subject matter; language. This is not true, for example, with art critics. Is it for this reason of a common medium put to a common, expressive purpose that to an outsider's eyes, the greatest critics of Latin American literature are also the practitioners of that literature?

In other words, I'm asking about a distinction between scholarship and criticism, a distinction akin to the separation of art historians from art critics. By asking this, I would really like to know if by locating the power and the practice of criticism in the university, we haven't been speaking of something other than literary criticism, as it might be understood by an international audience.

Lastly, I wonder if we shouldn't begin by accepting a hypothesis. The hypothesis that all writing whose intention is expressive is also critical. This hypothesis clearly excludes scholarship, as writing whose aim is not expressive, but rather limited to the denotative. The hypothesis purposely includes criticism, say of the structuralists, which to my eyes is among the most interesting fiction being written today.

If we accept the hypothesis that all purposely expressive writing is critical, then we seem to have elaborated two categories of criticism. The autocritical first. The text whose subject is really itself and whose process is reflexive, self-reexamination. An example of that might be [unintelligible 00:30:03]. The second category would be the heterocritical. The text whose subject is other than itself, or at least includes subjects other than itself. An example of this could be Asturias' El Señor Presidente. It could also include almost all literary criticism.

El formato que utilizaremos esta mañana en el panel de literatura es el siguiente: comenzaremos con los tres caballeros sentados detrás de mí en el estrado, a quienes presentaré en un momento. Luego invitaremos a los panelistas a responder algunas de las preguntas que ellos plantearán. Después continuaremos durante una hora a partir de ahora. Luego haremos una pausa y comenzará la hora dedicada al arte.

Detrás de mí, sentado justo en el centro, está Claudio Gutiérrez, quien es el rector o presidente de la Universidad de Costa Rica. Se encuentra aquí como filósofo visitante en el Departamento de Filosofía durante dos semanas, invitado conjuntamente por el Departamento y el Instituto de Estudios Latinoamericanos. Hemos aprovechado su presencia hoy para contar con su experiencia, no como hombre de letras o del arte, sino como filósofo. Creo que es muy importante tener esta síntesis que un filósofo puede aportar a estos simposios.

Professor Coleman: El informe mío es una especie de reportaje y además una glosa posible de este reportaje parcial. Voy tomando como lema de mi reportaje, mi ejercicio periodístico, el lema que Julio Cortázar agregó al comenzar su novela Rayuela. La cita es de Jacques Vaché, "Nada mata más a un hombre que tener que representar su país".

Yo creo que vi en las contribuciones y las improvisaciones del primer día un conflicto obvio entre los derechos de la imaginación autónoma y las estructuras totemizadas del poder. En el sentido de que las contribuciones, por una parte, tendían hacia una visión de la crítica como una disidencia de las normas, una disidencia que realmente desemboca en una otredad. La palabra clave en ese sentido posiblemente fue la palabra diálogo, palabra clave durante el primer día.

Por otra parte, otros críticos tendían a ver la literatura, sobre todo la novelística hispanoamericana, en el sentido de los valores representativos fotográficos de la literatura. Algunos críticos tendían a considerar la literatura únicamente por su valor mimético, o más groseramente, por el posible mensaje que hubiera en la obra literaria. Veo sobre todo en cuanto a una polarización primordial del primer día, vi yo una especie de conflicto entre métodos críticos, métodos desligados del examen de la obra literaria de su contexto social. Por otra parte, otros críticos que tendían a insistir en el examen de la obra literaria como ejemplo y fruto de la sociedad en que nace la obra literaria.

Vi también que la literatura fue vista por algunos críticos no solamente por su valor mimético, sino también por lo que yo quisiera calificar como la síndrome "Así es". Es decir, se valorizaba la obra literaria por su carácter verídico en cuanto a una situación política o sociológica de un determinado país. Vi también que algunos críticos todavía estaban funcionando con los preceptos ya enunciados por Taine en el prólogo de la Historia de la literatura inglesa. Es decir, los patrones de la race, le milieu et le moment.

Por otra parte, vi que algunos críticos se negaron el empleo de la obra literaria como prueba fehaciente de una situación política. Algunos críticos negaron el hecho de que una obra literaria fuera espejo de una sociedad particular. Vi que algunos críticos negaban el afán representativo de una obra literaria. Algunos, creo yo, vieron la literatura y el ejercicio de la literatura como una literatura unívoca, una literatura con mensaje que tendía, a mi ver, a la posibilidad de una especie de costumbrismo puesto al día. Creo que otros críticos querían por lo menos idear la posibilidad de una literatura que no era literatura, digamos, típica.

Como ustedes seguramente recordarán, hubo una larga charla en los simposios de arte y de literatura en pro y en contra de la búsqueda de la identidad. En ese sentido, creo que algunos críticos se quedaron bastante convencidos de que la identidad nacional particular de una obra literaria o de los tipos o caracteres dentro de la obra literaria no existe.

Por otra parte, algunos críticos que funcionan con una especie de compromiso social abierto tendían por un lado al examen naturalista con métodos naturalistas críticas. Por otra parte, un crítico como José Miguel de Oviedo va a insistir en el hecho de que la obra literaria forzosamente debe ser una obra. La crítica literaria debe ser un ejercicio de discordancia.

Ahora, en las contribuciones de Monegal y de Paz, yo vi sobre todo la insistencia en el perspectivismo de la lectura del texto, de los famosos signos múltiples posibles que todo crítico literario debe vislumbrar en la obra literaria. Lectura, entonces, de voces múltiples y no de voz única de mensaje. Vi que los críticos como Monegal y como Paz insistieron en varios niveles de la lectura y, además, en el examen de la obra literaria que tenía más o menos a la tendencia new criticism en vez de la tendencia comprometida. Estoy simplificando horriblemente, como verán.

En la contribución de Paz vi sobre todo que él lamentaba la falta de espacios críticos en el examen de la obra literaria de la crítica hispanoamericana. Lamentaba la falta de círculos críticos como los círculos que produjeron un Taine, un IA Richards, un [unintelligible 00:10:45]. Evidentemente Paz quiere, echa de menos la falta de libros que ponen libros y novelas en un sistema coordinatorio, como un mobile de Alexander Calder para que cada libro puesto y colocado así ilumine a otro libro por una serie de hilos conductores.

Paz lamentaba la falta de pensamiento crítico. "¿Por qué no hay?", se pregunta Octavio Paz. "¿Por qué no hay pensamiento crítico?". Creo que la palabra clave en ese sentido es la palabra muy predilecta de Octavio Paz, la palabra ruptura. Es decir que no hubo, según Paz, una ruptura definitiva con las culturas patrones que habían sofocado psíquicamente la imaginación literaria tradicional en la América Latina. Es decir, la independencia política no condujo forzosamente a una independencia psíquica.

De ahí, creo yo, vi la adhesión de Paz a Dadá y surrealismo como elementos anormales que socavan, en efecto; que tumban estructuras totemizadas. En la contribución de Santana me acuerdo la mención, la cita del uso de kitsch como manera de socavar, de tumbar una cultura patrón. Además, si mal no me acuerdo, Octavio Paz subrayaba el hecho de que la mera sátira no es signo de ruptura, sino signo de conformismo estético empedernido. Es decir, vi en esta polarización de los métodos críticos del primer día un impulso contra y en pro del impulso mimético.

Ahora, yo me pregunto. Yo echaba de menos algunas cosas. Yo echaba de menos sobre todo un examen del lenguaje crítico que los críticos manejan. Es decir, a mí me gustaría, por ejemplo, saber por qué el adjetivo personal en español tiene un valor positivo cuando un tema es una obra literaria. Es decir, me gustaría saber por qué la crítica todavía sigue manejando términos como realidad y fantasía cuando tales términos producirían una ola de risa en cualquier crítico profesional en otras lenguas.

Es decir, me gustaría ver la destrucción de las antinomias fáciles de la crítica que estorban nuestro examen múltiple y plástico de la obra literaria. A mí me gustaría que alguien por lo menos considere la posibilidad dentro de la crítica contemporánea hispanoamericana de la imaginación desvinculada de la sociedad. Es decir, la imaginación autónoma que pudiera dar en la literatura americana -no hispanoamericana, no norteamericana- en la literatura americana de imaginaciones subversivas, anarquistas y asistemáticas como Henry Thoreau y como Macedonio Fernández.

Como verán ustedes, he pasado por alto muchas cosas que no entendí muy bien, pero solo quiero dejar con ustedes mi idea de que realmente durante el primer día se establecía el famoso diálogo entre los sistemas críticos. Para quedar bien con lo que considero diálogo, me gustaría tachar la palabra diálogo y luego insistir en la palabra otredad, porque por medio de la otredad conseguimos una verdadera identificación y un perfil del hombre y cultura. [aplausos]

Escojo como punto de partida para la síntesis de la mesa redonda de ayer en la mañana una afirmación que aparentemente no es polémica. Toda literatura trasmite no uno, sino muchos mensajes. Algunos de estos mensajes pueden corresponder a una crítica social. En Latinoamérica estos mensajes pueden ser amplificados por la institución de la censura. Así el texto mas nimio se convierte en importante.

El papel del crítico literario es descodificar todos esos mensajes, lo cual tiende un puente de relación entre el tema de esta segunda mesa redonda y el tema de la primera. Ahora bien, cabe señalar que algunos de esos mensajes son de naturaleza predominantemente educativa, difusionista o proselitista, mientras que otros son creación literaria en sentido propio.

Aquí puede tomarse una posición claramente dualista. Una determinada obra de arte es lo uno o lo otro. O bien tomar una posición gradualista. Las obras estarían colocadas en una gama entre el polo arte y el polo propaganda. Finalmente, cabe rechazar la antinomia y atribuirla a una ilusión abstraccionista.

La práctica y la contemplación interactúan en el hombre de carne y hueso, como interactúan también lo individual y lo social en el hombre concreto. Como quiera que sea, permanece un problema apremiante. Esos mensajes que la obra trasmite contendrán algo irreductiblemente literario, o bien esos mensajes no serán más que una transcripción del contenido de otras disciplinas.

Si la literatura tuviera como objeto describir la realidad, otras disciplinas desempeñarían mejor esa función; las ciencias naturales, la historia, la sociología. La literatura es además fundante de realidades. Crea objetos culturales que en alguna medida entran a integrar el medio social. Al convertirse en códigos literarios los mensajes de otras disciplinas, la literatura desorganiza esos sistemas de significantes con la idea de recomponerlos en un sistema propio.

Por medio de imágenes, la literatura reencuentra al hombre total en la globalidad de su sentido. Esto es una respuesta al problema. Llamémosla tesis de la autonomía de la literatura. Cabe también enfocar las cosas de una manera distinta.

Decir que la literatura es irreductible supone que el texto es separable del contexto. Esto no es más que una ilusión, producto de la deformación profesional del crítico literario. No es nunca cierto que un texto exista sin contexto. Podemos prestarle un contexto muy inmediato a nosotros con el cual nos identificamos y, por lo tanto, somos incapaces de percibirlo. El contexto está ahí. Soy yo mismo, el crítico, dotado de un instrumental que me hace ver la realidad de cierto modo, condicionándome de mil y una maneras.

El contexto así prestado ha venido a sustituir al contexto original. El contexto teórico al contexto histórico. El contexto real puede ser consciente o inconsciente. El teórico también. Si del examen de la obra de un poeta secundario puede deducirse la ideología de una época, ¿qué de extraño tiene que el crítico no se percate de sus propios supuestos inconscientes? Es posible un psicoanálisis literario tanto en lo individual como en lo social. En todo caso, parece innegable que las obras de muchos grandes literatos de América Latina han sido condicionadas por fenómenos históricos, cortes brutales de la institucionalidad.

Es posible también atacar la tesis de la autonomía de la literatura desde otro ángulo. La literatura se hace en un lenguaje. Ahora bien, ¿es autónomo el medio que usamos? ¿Quién escribe por mí cuando yo escribo? El lenguaje es un producto social y en nuestros países está subyugado por poderes opresivos. Podemos de aquí sacar consecuencias pesimistas. La literatura no derribará al imperialismo. Mil novelas no valen un partido político.

Podemos ser optimistas y preguntarnos, con Pablo Freire, por ejemplo, por la posibilidad de una palabra liberadora o en vías de liberación. En todo caso, parece que a la literatura de un país en desarrollo—es decir, un país en dependencia, solo le son posibles dos caminos; ser literatura alienada o ser literatura comprometida. La cuestión, como ven, no está cerrada. Los invito a todos ustedes a continuarla discutiendo. [aplausos]

Tal vez porque la conferencia está llegando a su fin, anoche estuve pensando en las últimas palabras, y recordé las últimas palabras de Gertrude Stein. ¿Recuerdan que cuando Gertrude Stein estaba muriendo, Alice B. Toklas le preguntó: "Gertrude Stein, ¿cuál es la respuesta?", y Gertrude Stein giró la cabeza, tal vez por última vez, y dijo: "¿Cuál es la pregunta?"

Se espera que los simposios lleguen a conclusiones, que respondan preguntas. En mi experiencia, nunca lo hacen. O al menos los buenos nunca lo hacen. En cambio, diseñan o rediseñan las preguntas. No conozco la respuesta a ninguna de las preguntas que se han planteado, ni siquiera a las que se han insinuado durante estos últimos días. No tengo ninguna declaración que hacer. Desde mi punto de vista, desde un punto bien alejado de las circunstancias, tengo algunas preguntas que me gustaría plantear. Ciertamente no la pregunta. Casi unas preguntas introductorias.

Al principio, pensé que mi pregunta básica era una que había sido planteada por el simposio: ¿Cuál es el estado de la crítica literaria en América Latina? No se ha ofrecido realmente una respuesta directa a esa pregunta. A medida que he escuchado a los distintos ponentes, a los diversos textos, me he dado cuenta de que tal vez no se ofreció una pregunta porque la propia pregunta debe ser reformulada, posiblemente de la siguiente manera: ¿Cuál es el estado de las críticas literarias en las Américas Latinas? De forma adecuada, considerando el co-patrocinio de esta conferencia, la pregunta debería estar en plural.

Mi segunda pregunta surge de esta primera. Hace años, un famoso crítico norteamericano dijo que había leído literatura latinoamericana y descubrió que solo tenía interés antropológico. Claramente es una historia apócrifa. Si no lo es, debería serlo. Me pregunto si hoy podemos decir lo mismo de la crítica latinoamericana. Dore Ashton citó el importante ensayo de Borges El escritor argentino y la tradición, que en sí mismo es un manifiesto del interés universal de la literatura latinoamericana.

Me pregunto si ahora no deberíamos recordar el ensayo de Borges Kafka y sus precursores, donde Borges sostiene que un escritor crea a sus propios precursores. ¿Es posible que el diálogo, del que tanto se ha hablado en esta sala, pueda lograrse en parte mediante críticos que creen a sus propios precursores? Es decir, al integrarse más plenamente a la comunidad histórica e internacional de la crítica, donde la Poética de Aristóteles para los ingleses es un texto en inglés, donde Cantillon para los franceses es un texto en francés.

Esta pregunta lleva a otra, que es muy difícil e incluso, puedo decir, angustiante para mí. Como editor de una revista en inglés dedicada al arte latinoamericano, leo muchos ensayos de críticos latinoamericanos reconocidos, respetados e incluso brillantes. Muchos de ellos tenemos que rechazarlos, porque al ser traducidos al inglés descubrimos que la sustancia se ha evaporado casi por completo. Eso podría sugerir una solución muy fácil. Podría sugerir que una crítica es buena y correcta y otra es mala y equivocada. Claramente, esa no es la respuesta. Es demasiado simple.

La pregunta que plantea esta situación es fundamental: ¿cuál es el medio adecuado para la crítica? Cuando un crítico literario escribe, su medio es idéntico a su objeto de estudio: el lenguaje. Esto no es cierto, por ejemplo, en el caso de los críticos de arte. ¿Es acaso por esta razón—un medio común puesto al servicio de un propósito expresivo común—que, desde la perspectiva de un observador externo, los grandes críticos de la literatura latinoamericana son también los practicantes de esa literatura?

En otras palabras, estoy preguntando por una distinción entre erudición y crítica, una distinción semejante a la separación entre historiadores del arte y críticos de arte. Al preguntar esto, realmente quisiera saber si al ubicar el poder y la práctica de la crítica en la universidad, no hemos estado hablando de algo diferente de la crítica literaria, tal como podría entenderla un público internacional.

Por último, me pregunto si no deberíamos empezar aceptando una hipótesis: la hipótesis de que toda escritura cuya intención sea expresiva es también crítica. Esta hipótesis excluye claramente a la erudición, como escritura cuyo objetivo no es expresivo, sino más bien limitado a lo denotativo. La hipótesis incluye deliberadamente la crítica, por ejemplo, de los estructuralistas, que a mis ojos es una de las ficciones más interesantes que se escriben hoy en día.

Si aceptamos la hipótesis de que toda escritura expresiva intencionada es crítica, entonces parecería que hemos elaborado dos categorías de crítica. La primera, la autocrítica. El texto cuyo objeto es realmente él mismo y cuyo proceso es reflexivo, de auto-revisión. Un ejemplo de eso podría ser [ininteligible 00:30:03]. La segunda categoría sería la heterocrítica. El texto cuyo objeto es otro distinto de sí mismo, o al menos que incluye objetos distintos de sí mismo. Un ejemplo de esto podría ser El Señor Presidente de Asturias. También podría incluir casi toda la crítica literaria.

By and large, the older Latin American literature falls into the category of the hetero critical. By and large, the best of the newer Latin American literature, most of the books of the boom, for example, fall into the category of the auto critical, or they at least try to achieve that category. If there is any truth at all to these divisions, and clearly I want to make it evident that I'm not sure that there is, can we then proceed to talk without the terms creative or critical? Can we exclude them and perhaps begin to talk with the terms good and bad writing? Questions define limits. Answers which are not in the form of questions put an end to dialogue. Thank you. [aplausos] 

Would any of the gentlemen or panelists like to speak?

I had been asked not to speak anymore. I also received a telegram from Woody Allen. He told me not to impersonate him without a contract. No. I already lost two jokes. Can you hear me?

No, repeat it.

Can you hear me now? I was saying that I received a telegram from my friend Woody Allen asking me not to impersonate him anymore today. I'm going to speak completely seriously. You won’t recognize me. Regarding what Professor Gutiérrez said, I think there is great clarity in his exposition and sharpness in his terminology, and I would only object to one term: the term 'Autonomy of Literature.' I believe it’s better to speak of the Specificity of literature. It’s obvious that literature is not autonomous, because if it were, it would be floating around in interstellar space. That is to say, the issue with literature is whether it is something specific. It is not autonomous, and we are all in complete agreement that the literary text is produced within a context—or multiple contexts.

Regarding the provocative questions from my friend Ronald Christ, which I really liked, by the way, I think one could try to answer them in capsule form, like Reader’s Digest philosophy. First, the status of literary criticism in Latin America. I think that when we say, "There are no critics," what we’re really expressing is, "There are no critics we like." "There’s no criticism" means, "I could write better criticism," or something like that. In reality, Latin America has a great critical tradition starting with Andrés Bello. There is a tradition of Latin American literary criticism that Bello initiated at the beginning of the 19th century, which of course corresponds to a mix of 18th- and 19th-century concepts.

From there onward, people like Sarmiento, Martí, Rodó, Darío, Alfonso Reyes, Henríquez Ureña, Martínez Estrada, Mariátegui, Borges, Paz, etc., continue that tradition. I believe we shouldn’t be unfair. I think we do ourselves a disservice by seeking only the latest model of criticism arriving from Paris or Timbuktu.

As for the other question—whether literary criticism in Latin America only has anthropological value—I think Christ brought that up to provoke us, to show that he too has his own Woody Allen. We won’t answer that because the first question already did. The third one—what is the appropriate medium of criticism, if I’m quoting correctly—I believe that depends greatly on the context. I think the issue of the medium of criticism depends on each society. In a highly developed society, undoubtedly, someone like Edmund Wilson can be the most important critic for several decades in the United States. That same Edmund Wilson, relocated to Montevideo, might have much less impact—or maybe about the same.

There, I’d say we’re led more toward another question: the distinction between scholars and critics. I believe that’s where one of Ronald’s most important observations lies. The fact that we professors tend to overvalue scholarship—we have to, because otherwise we wouldn’t get paid these fabulous salaries. As a result, we forget that literary criticism is a literary genre, and as such, it requires good writing. No matter how many index cards we compile, how impeccable our footnotes are, how many languages we speak—if when the moment of truth arrives, we write in a language no one can understand except our colleagues, who are not interested in reading it anyway, and our poor students, who are forced to read it and are a captive audience—then we are clearly in a truly dreadful situation.

Literary criticism is a literary genre. That’s why it’s not so strange that it has been practiced by great writers. We have Coleridge, Borges, Paz, etc. Regarding the idea that all writing is critical—I believe we discussed that thoroughly yesterday. Finally, about good and bad writing—everything boils down to that. Yesterday, Alazraki mentioned the famous anecdote of Herbert Marcuse: Balzac is good because he writes well, and that’s the core of it. We return to specificity. Whether we are writers, critics, professors, scholars—what we cannot forget is the specific. The specific is what the work has or says as a literary work. [applause]

Hello, one moment. I would like to—it's not exactly a response—it's just a request, a solicitation to Professor Ellison. I would like to hand over to him something I could say myself, but which he will be able to express with much greater precision, regarding an aspect that, it seems to me, has not yet been addressed. Professor Monegal touched on today’s panel's comments in a general way. But there’s something that remains vague, not very clear, which is the concept of a model, which has been discussed a lot and will be discussed again in the next hour in relation to the visual arts. I have the impression that this concept of a model would be extremely important to help bring the reasoning together. I would ask Professor Ellison to introduce what we already talked about yesterday, which he could explain perfectly.

This is a question, I believe I'll speak in English, carrying along the suggestion of my friend Affonso Romano de Sant'Anna. He felt, and I felt, several of us felt, that yesterday there was a problem in the discussion of the term model, and this may or may not be the time, but since he's asked me to, and he is our guest, and my friend, we'll make a few brief remarks here on the question of the model, as it seemed to me it came up yesterday. The problem of the word model, which is terribly complicated, is that it means many different things, and in the field of art, apparently, we all know of the phrase artists and models, and I think that sense of model may have been present in part of the discussion. Model also may mean the guide, the image we follow, so that when we spoke of the artists and models from Europe, we may have had in mind those particular painters whom we follow. That is a second definition that seems to have arisen yesterday in the discussion. The most confusing concept of model, however, seems to be the one operational model, which I was myself checking into it this morning and read a treatise on mathematics, trying to get at the concept of operative model, and I must say I was defeated in my attempt because I'm not a mathematician. 

As the structuralists use the term model and as Professor Affonso Romano de Sant'Anna has used the term model, and as we have tried to use it in a class in Structuralist Approaches to Brazilian Literature that I'm teaching, the model is an abstraction that is a kind of theoretical representation of a reality. I have always thought that the model was an absent structure, that the model was pure abstraction and was simply an attempt to give a kind of a metaphorical form, if you will, to the absent structure or the potential structure of a work. 

The model may vary with the individual who is attempting to apply the model. 

I don't think I have aided in the present discussion of literature by referring to this point, but I am answering, responding to a request of my friend and colleague, Affonso Romano de Sant'Anna, and if possible maybe this matter will be further debated in the section on art. Since I have the microphone, though I was perplexed by reference to structuralism as the most interesting or some of the best fiction being written today, I felt sure that would elicit a response from Affonso Romano de Sant'Anna and instead he gave me the microphone, which is a problem for me. The idea of structuralism being a kind of a fiction is obviously a theme one here. 

There are aspects of structuralism that have to be taken on faith, I think that applies to a great deal of literary criticism and art criticism too. As far as the fiction part of it is concerned, it has very practical ramifications. I would simply say that in my own practical experience and in that of my students in the field of literary criticism, applying structural methods, the consensus has been that we have learned some very valuable things and had some new insights applying structural approaches that were simply not possible until this rather new instrument was handed to us in the last 5, 8, 10 or maybe 20 years. Thank you, Mr. Chairman. I'll be timekeeper from now on. [applause]

I just wanted to say about the remark of structuralist as fiction, it was the highest compliment that I could think to pay to it and I meant in no way to limit it. I think that the question you raise, that we in talking about criticism as fiction, seem to denigrate it, that is to denigrate criticism, says something about an inverted sense of values that I think has been underlying much of the discussion. 

I know I shouldn't be speaking on this matter, but I just wanted to mention that I've always felt that the word model or patron, leaving aside completely any mention of structuralism whatsoever, I've always been rather fascinated and frightened by the ramifications for the study of literature of the last chapter of The Wretched of the Earth of Frantz Fanon. Therefore, my reading of the word model with regard to the possibilities of the examination of Latin American literature, above all historical Latin American literature, might be allied to my gleanings on cultural nationalism, of Fanon's work, above all from the extraordinary destructive effects of a kind of psychic colonialism, which very often has affected the birth or the non-birth of particular national and continental literatures. 

After these three days of discussions, which are fortunately coming to an end—or at least that's what the program says—we have heard many things. We have made or tried to make a critique of language, a critique of creation, a critique of criticism, and even self-criticism. We’ve heard many theories of all kinds, of every stripe, including one from a person whose figure and work I deeply respect, Maestro Tamayo, who presented a curious thesis claiming that Mexican mestizos were not like the criollos of South America and that they held a preferential status. A thesis that also included an anti-Hispanism which I thought had already been put to rest by history.

Curiously, anti-Hispanism among us is always expressed in Spanish. [laughter] I now want to add to all these layers of criticism—thick or ethereal, at times—one last critique: the critique of the symposium itself. I was quite struck by the fact that we were brought from so far away—some more than others—only to be given exactly five minutes to speak and present our ideas. Maybe there were too many ideas, but still. On the other hand, we’ve noticed that the only people who had unlimited time, all the time they wanted to speak, were the moderators. The only person who truly was not interrupted at this symposium was Octavio Paz—because he wasn’t here. [laughter]

His text could be read without any complication thanks to that privilege of not being present, so next time the guests will be careful to stay home and just send in their texts. [applause] There's something else I want to add. A feeling of fatigue, of boredom that has been growing in me, and I say this with complete sincerity. Because I’ve noticed that the topics we were discussing, which at times even inflamed us—sometimes to excessively personal extremes—are very old topics. These are debates that already took place and caused major controversies back in the 1930s, and were believed to be resolved.

We thought ourselves modern at last for having overcome those stages. And here we are reproducing them exactly. They’re like ghosts we tried to bury in oblivion and now they’re reappearing here. Wrapped in very modern language and in highly erudite and sophisticated references to Kristeva and company. All of this gives me a feeling of confusion and wasted time that frankly alarms me. That is to say, I’ve felt that the dialogue has revolved around topics we supposedly didn’t come here to discuss. We've set aside a series of proposals and questions—I’ll mention or recall, for instance, those raised by Monsiváis, which I found very interesting. Now also those by Ronald.

We’ve pushed them aside, and whenever we try to discuss them, these ghostly—or rather, lethal—controversies get in the way. I think this is an indirect way of proving Octavio Paz’s paper right. Indeed, we don’t have the habit of talking, of discussing, of dialoguing—which consists in the art of listening to the other, not to oneself. To avoid that, I’m going to stop talking. [applause]

I just want to make two points—actually, I feel a bit obliged to make a small defense of this symposium so as not to force the organizers to do it themselves. Every symposium, in my opinion, takes a stance. A stance that is always risky. We’ve all been to colloquia, meetings, congresses that follow, and have followed, very different systems. Each has its strengths and weaknesses. This one, undoubtedly—the system followed here—has undeniable flaws. The biggest one is, of course, the brevity of the primary interventions, perhaps not the others, but certainly our initial remarks. We have all felt this. That shouldn’t prevent us from seeing other qualities, such as the larger number of possible interventions that a system like this encourages.

I think it would be a bit unfair to be as harsh as Diego has been toward this meeting. In fact, it was a position that was taken, as I said, with risks like any other position one might take, but I don't believe the results have been so useless. Regarding the issues that he, like myself and many others, thought had been resolved thirty years ago—and which we now realize are not so resolved—I believe that alone justifies the theme of the symposium. It’s not true that the answers are already given; it’s not true that the problems, even as they are currently formulated and with different language, are resolved. What I truly believe in is the constant recurrence, the almost cyclical reappearance of this type of problem—which, moreover, is what justifies our being here. Honestly, I don’t feel bored, nor do I feel I’ve wasted my time uselessly. That’s all I wanted to say. [applause]

I would like, on behalf of the students, to echo Professor Oviedo’s opinion—not because the opinions or critical attitudes sound outdated or anything like that, but because we are the ones who best experience the paradoxes: when we’re spoken to about the New Critics or about opposing contemporary theories, and the opportunity has been given to us, through Professor Coleman, to seek a distinctive trait of Latin American literature, such as the liberation of the imagination. This has barely been discussed in the symposium. That is to say, we are accustomed in Latin America to a legendary world, a mythical world that is integrated into the fictions of Borges, and nothing has been said to us about it.

We are on the verge of a budding Latin American science fiction, of an allegorical fiction, and of a fiction that goes far beyond naturalism, completely breaking away from neorealism—and again, nothing has been said. Rather than the imposition of rationalist critical tools from Europe or the West, or Anglo-American ones if we prefer—Anglo-Saxon criticism, New Criticism—what we are seeing are completely authentic emerging symptoms, the kind that Professor Oviedo called for on the first day as signs of Latin American identity.

If we take, for example, any of Borges’ narratives, we see a hybridity of the imaginary, as I’ve been able to observe in some books published by Professor Wheetlock here in this department. It’s not just about the imposition of schemes or archetypes from Jung or theories from Northrop Frye—it’s simply an approach to the imagination, to Borges’ imaginary structures, just as they can be accessed today and in the most capable way. As for some of the paradoxes I’m experiencing myself—and possibly some other students are too—it’s that we’re told about structure as an autonomous entity that has various meanings. And now we’re being told it is entirely signifying, indicative, something that guides us.

More than a committed reading, we’re told it’s a reading of pleasure, an act of seduction, something that should be enjoyed. These contradictions between subjectivity and the semantics of the work haven’t been addressed here—I don’t know why. And this is what concerns us: how to recreate a work, how to liberate the imagination from what Professor Coleman mentioned, whether it be cultural environments, the societies we live in, political impositions, and so on.

I believe literature is something more transcendent and more imaginary. I also believe, based on what Professor Gutiérrez said, that this falling into the hermeneutic circle of author, text, and reader is already somewhat outdated—not because it’s inaccurate; clearly, it is valid—but because now there’s more emphasis on subjectivity, more focus on readability. We’re interested in discovering what are the true signs and traits of Latin American literature’s creativity that make it so accessible to our reading and our enjoyment. That’s all. [applause]

We're already out of time, but if any panelist wishes to speak, that person would be the last to speak during this morning session—the first morning session.

Yesterday and today we discussed the concept model. I want to make a just a quick comment. The problem with the word model is that it's a word. It shares the problem of all words. They're models. [risas] 

Since that intervention was so short, we can have another one. [laughter]

I would like to thank the students who, constantly during the breaks between sessions, outside this room and now, the words of this young student… have pointed out how interesting this symposium could have been if it had been organized by the students. [applause]

En términos generales, la literatura latinoamericana más antigua cae dentro de la categoría de la heterocrítica. En términos generales, lo mejor de la literatura latinoamericana más reciente —la mayoría de los libros del boom, por ejemplo— cae dentro de la categoría de la autocrítica, o al menos intenta alcanzar esa categoría. Si hay algo de verdad en estas divisiones quiero dejar en claro que no estoy seguro de que la haya—, ¿podemos entonces proceder a hablar sin usar los términos creativo o crítico? ¿Podemos excluirlos y, quizás, comenzar a hablar en términos de buena y mala escritura? Las preguntas definen los límites. Las respuestas que no adoptan la forma de preguntas ponen fin al diálogo. Gracias. [aplausos]

A mí me habían pedido que no hablara más. Además recibí un telegrama de Woody Allen también. Me dijo que no lo debo personificar sin contrato. No. Ya perdí dos chistes. ¿Me oyen?

¿Se oye ahora? Yo decía que había recibido un telegrama de mi amigo Woody Allen pidiéndome que no lo personificara más hoy. Voy a hablar totalmente en serio. No me van a reconocer. En lo que dijo el profesor Gutiérrez, me parece que hay una gran claridad expositiva y una gran nitidez de términos, y yo objetaría solo uno. El término, Autonomía de la Literatura. Yo creo que es mejor hablar de, Especificidad de la literatura. Es obvio que la literatura no es autónoma, porque si no, andaría circulando por los espacios interestelares. Es decir, el problema de la literatura es, si la literatura es específicamente algo. Autónoma no lo es, y estamos totalmente de acuerdo todos en que el texto literario se produce en un contexto o en múltiples contextos. 

Con respecto a las preguntas tan provocativas de mi amigo Ronald Christ, que me gustaron mucho, entre paréntesis, yo creo que se podría intentar en respuestas así, tipo cápsula or reader's digest philosophy. En primer lugar, el status de literary criticism en Latinoamérica. Yo creo que, cuando decimos, "No hay críticos". Lo que estamos expresando es, "No hay críticos que nos gusten a nosotros". "No hay crítica" quiere decir, "Yo podría escribir mejor crítica o algo así". En realidad, América Latina tiene una gran tradición crítica desde Andrés Bello. Hay una crítica de la literatura latinoamericana que inicia Bello a principios del siglo XIX y que corresponde, naturalmente, a conceptos mezclados del siglo XVIII y siglo XIX. 

De ahí en adelante, gente como Sarmiento, como Martí, Rodó, Darío, Alfonso Reyes, Henríquez Ureña, Martínez Estrada, Mariátegui, Borges, Paz, etcétera. Continúan esa tradición. Creo que nosotros no debemos ser injustos. Creo que nos hacemos un servicio muy flaco al buscar únicamente la crítica literaria en el último modelo llegado de París o de Timbuktu. 

En cuanto a la otra cuestión, de que si la crítica literaria en América Latina solo tiene un valor antropológico, creo que Chris lo puso para provocarnos, para demostrar que él también tiene su Woody Allen. No la vamos a contestar porque ya está contestada por la primera. La tercera, ¿cuál es el appropriate medium of criticism, si estoy citándolo bien? Yo creo que eso depende mucho del contexto. Creo que el problema del medium of criticism depende de cada sociedad. En una sociedad muy desarrollada, indudablemente, un Edmund Wilson puede ser el crítico más importante durante varias décadas en Estados Unidos. Ese mismo Edmund Wilson, trasladado a Montevideo, puede tener muchísimo menos impacto, o tal vez casi el mismo. 

Ahí, yo diría que esto nos lleva más bien a la otra pregunta, la distinción entre scholars and critics. Creo que ahí es donde está precisamente una de las observaciones más importantes de Ronald. El hecho de que los profesores tendemos a exaltar mucho la scholarship, lo tenemos que hacer porque si no, no nos pagarían estos sueldos fabulosos. De manera que nos olvidamos que la crítica literaria es un género literario, y que como género literario supone escribir bien. Por más fichas que hagamos, por impecables que sean nuestras footnotes, por idiomas que manejemos, si cuando llega la hora de la verdad, escribimos un lenguaje que no puede entender nadie, salvo nuestros colegas, que no están interesados en leerlo, naturalmente, y nuestros pobres estudiantes, que están obligados a leernos y son un auditorio cautivo, evidentemente estamos en una situación verdaderamente espantosa. 

La crítica literaria es un género literario, por eso no es tan extraño que haya sido ejercido por grandes escritores. Tenemos Coleridge, mencionamos Borges, Paz, etcétera. En cuanto al concepto de que toda escritura es crítica, yo creo que ya abundamos en eso ayer. Finalmente, lo del buen y mal escribir. Todo pasa ahí. Ayer, Alazraki, mencionaba la famosa anécdota de Herbert Marcuse. Balzac es bueno porque escribe bien, y eso es en el fondo. Volvemos a nuestra especificidad. Si somos escritores, críticos, profesores, scholars, lo que no podemos olvidar es lo específico. Lo específico es lo que la obra tiene o dice como obra literaria. [aplausos] 

Hola, un momento. Me gustaría—no es exactamente una respuesta—es simplemente un pedido, una solicitud al profesor Ellison. Me gustaría trasladarle algo que yo podría decir, pero que él podrá expresar con mucha mayor precisión, sobre un aspecto que, me parece, aún no se ha abordado. El profesor Monegal trató, de manera general, los comentarios de la mesa de hoy. Pero hay algo que sigue siendo vago, poco claro, y es el concepto de modelo, del cual se ha hablado mucho y se hablará nuevamente en la próxima hora, en relación con las artes plásticas. Tengo la impresión de que este concepto de modelo sería sumamente importante para aglutinar el razonamiento. Le pediría al profesor Ellison que introduzca lo que ya conversamos ayer y que él podría explicar perfectamente.

Esta es una cuestión… creo que hablaré en inglés, siguiendo la sugerencia de mi amigo Affonso Romano de Sant'Anna. Él sentía, y yo también, varios de nosotros sentimos, que ayer hubo un problema en la discusión del término modelo, y este puede o no ser el momento adecuado, pero dado que él me lo pidió —y él es nuestro invitado y mi amigo— haré algunos comentarios breves sobre la cuestión del modelo, tal como me pareció que surgió ayer. El problema de la palabra modelo, que es terriblemente complicada, es que significa muchas cosas distintas, y en el campo del arte, evidentemente, todos conocemos la frase artistas y modelos, y creo que ese sentido de la palabra modelo pudo haber estado presente en parte de la discusión. Modelo también puede significar la guía, la imagen que seguimos, de modo que cuando hablamos de los artistas y modelos de Europa, quizás teníamos en mente a aquellos pintores particulares a quienes seguimos. Esa es una segunda definición que, al parecer, surgió ayer en la discusión. El concepto más confuso de modelo, sin embargo, parece ser el de modelo operativo, el cual estuve revisando esta mañana y leí un tratado de matemáticas tratando de entender el concepto de modelo operativo, y debo decir que fracasé en mi intento porque no soy matemático.

Tal como los estructuralistas usan el término modelo, y como el profesor Affonso Romano de Sant'Anna ha usado el término, y como hemos intentado usarlo en una clase sobre Enfoques Estructuralistas de la Literatura Brasileña que estoy impartiendo, el modelo es una abstracción, una especie de representación teórica de una realidad. Siempre he pensado que el modelo era una estructura ausente, que el modelo era pura abstracción y simplemente un intento de dar una forma metafórica, si se quiere, a la estructura ausente o a la estructura potencial de una obra.

El modelo puede variar según la persona que intente aplicarlo.

No creo haber contribuido mucho a la discusión actual sobre literatura al referirme a este punto, pero estoy respondiendo a la solicitud de mi amigo y colega Affonso Romano de Sant'Anna, y si es posible, tal vez este tema se debatirá más a fondo en la sección sobre arte. Ya que tengo el micrófono, aunque me desconcertó la referencia al estructuralismo como la ficción más interesante o como parte de la mejor ficción que se está escribiendo hoy, estaba seguro de que eso provocaría una respuesta de Affonso Romano de Sant'Anna, pero en su lugar me pasó el micrófono, lo cual es un problema para mí. La idea del estructuralismo como una especie de ficción es claramente un tema aquí.

Hay aspectos del estructuralismo que deben aceptarse por fe, y creo que eso también se aplica a gran parte de la crítica literaria y la crítica de arte. En cuanto a la parte de la ficción, tiene ramificaciones muy prácticas. Diría simplemente que, en mi propia experiencia práctica y en la de mis estudiantes en el campo de la crítica literaria, al aplicar métodos estructuralistas, el consenso ha sido que hemos aprendido cosas muy valiosas y obtenido nuevos conocimientos que simplemente no eran posibles hasta que se nos entregó este instrumento relativamente nuevo en los últimos 5, 8, 10 o quizá 20 años. Gracias, señor presidente. De ahora en adelante seré el cronometrador. [aplausos]

Solo quería decir que el comentario sobre el estructuralismo como ficción fue el mayor elogio que se me ocurrió hacerle, y en ningún momento quise limitarlo. Creo que la cuestión que usted plantea —que al hablar de la crítica como ficción parecemos denigrarla, es decir, denigrar la crítica— dice algo sobre un sentido de valores invertido que, creo, ha estado presente en gran parte de la discusión.

Sé que no debería hablar sobre este asunto, pero solo quería mencionar que siempre he sentido que la palabra modelo o patrón, dejando completamente de lado cualquier mención al estructuralismo, siempre me ha parecido algo fascinante y a la vez inquietante por sus ramificaciones en el estudio de la literatura, especialmente en relación con el último capítulo de Los condenados de la tierra de Frantz Fanon. Por lo tanto, mi lectura del término modelo, con respecto a las posibilidades del análisis de la literatura latinoamericana —sobre todo la literatura histórica latinoamericana— podría estar vinculada a mis interpretaciones del nacionalismo cultural en la obra de Fanon, especialmente en relación con los efectos destructivos extraordinarios de una especie de colonialismo psíquico, que muy a menudo ha afectado el nacimiento o la no aparición de ciertas literaturas nacionales y continentales.

Tras estos tres días de discusiones, que felizmente llegan a su fin, o por lo menos así lo anuncia el programa, hemos oído muchas cosas. Hemos hecho o intentado hacer la crítica del lenguaje, la crítica de la creación, la crítica de la crítica y hasta la autocrítica. Hemos oído muchas teorías de todo tipo, de todo jaez, inclusive alguna como de una persona cuya figura y obra respeto tanto como la del Maestro Tamayo, que por allí exposó una curiosa tesis según la cual los mestizos mexicanos no eran los criollos de América del Sur y que tenía un estatus preferencial. Tesis que también incluía un antihispanismo que me parecía ya sofocado por la historia. 

Curiosamente el antihispanismo entre nosotros siempre se pronuncia en español. [risas] Yo quiero ahora agregar a todas estas críticas que se han ido superponiendo como capas espesas o etéreas a veces, una última crítica, que es la crítica del simposium. Me ha llamado mucho la atención que se nos haya hecho venir desde tan lejos, algunos más que otros, para darnos exactamente cinco minutos de tiempo para hablar y exponer nuestras ideas. A lo mejor eran muchas las ideas, pero en fin. En cambio hemos notado que las únicas personas que han tenido un tiempo ilimitado, todo el tiempo a su disposición para hablar, eran los moderadores. La única persona realmente que no ha sido interrumpida en este simposium ha sido Octavio Paz porque estaba ausente. [risas] 

Se pudo leer su texto sin ninguna complicación debido a ese privilegio de no estar aquí, de tal modo que, la próxima vez los invitados se cuidarán muy bien de estar en su casa y mandar su texto. [aplausos] Hay algo más que quiero agregar. Una sensación de fatiga, de aburrimiento que ha ido creciendo en mí, y lo digo con toda sinceridad. Porque he ido notando que los temas que estábamos discutiendo y que a veces nos enardecían, hasta un límite a veces excesivamente personal, son temas muy viejos. Son temas que ya se discutieron y provocaron también grandes polémicas en los años 30, que se pensaban que estaban ya resueltos. 

Nosotros nos creíamos modernos al fin por estar seguros de haber superado esas etapas. Aquí las estamos reproduciendo idénticamente. Son como fantasmas que hemos querido sepultar en el olvido y vuelven a aparecer aquí. Envueltos en palabras modernísimas y en citas muy eruditas y sofisticadas sobre la Kristeva y compañía. Todo esto me produce una sensación de confusión y de tiempo perdido que francamente me alarma. Es decir, he sentido que el diálogo ha girado sobre temas que se supone no veníamos a discutir. Hemos dejado de lado una serie de propuestas, de preguntas. Menciono o recuerdo en este caso las de Monsiváis, por ejemplo, que me interesaban muchísimo. Ahora las de Ronald. 

Las hemos dejado de lado y cuando nos ponemos a discutirlas siempre se interponen estas polémicas fantasmales, o más bien letales. Creo que esto es una forma indirecta de darle la razón al paper de Octavio Paz. En efecto, no tenemos el hábito de hablar, de discutir, de dialogar. Que consiste en el arte de escuchar al contrario, no a uno mismo. Para evitar eso voy a dejar de hablar. [aplausos] 

Solo quiero hacer dos—En realidad me siento un poco obligado a hacer una pequeña defensa de este simposium para no obligar a los organizadores a hacerla. Todo simposium, creo yo, toma un partido. Un partido que siempre es riesgoso. Todos hemos estado en coloquios, reuniones, congresos, que siguen y han seguido, muy diferentes sistemas. Cada uno tiene sus cualidades y sus defectos. Este, indudablemente, el sistema aquí seguido tiene indudables defectos. El más grande es, claro, la cortedad de las intervenciones primarias, no de las otras quizás, pero de nuestras intervenciones primeras. Esto todos lo hemos sentido. No hay que dejar de ver por eso, otras cualidades que son, la mayor cantidad de intervenciones posibles que un sistema como este propicia. 

Yo creo que sería un poco injusto ponerse tan duro como Diego lo ha hecho con esta reunión. En realidad fue un partido que se tomó, como digo, con unos riesgos como cualquier otro partido que se tome, pero no creo que los resultados sean tan inútiles. Respecto a las cuestiones que él, como yo y como muchos pensábamos resueltas hace 30 años y nos damos cuenta de que no están tan resueltas, me parece que eso sólo justifica el tema del simposio. No es cierto que estén dadas las respuestas, no es cierto que los problemas en esos términos mismos que se plantean y con lenguaje diferente estén resueltos. Precisamente lo que yo creo es en la recurrencia constante, la reaparición casi cíclica de este tipo de problemas, que es por otra parte lo que justifica que estemos aquí. Yo no me siento, la verdad, ni tan aburrido ni tan inútilmente perdido mi tiempo. Es solo esto lo que quería decir. [aplausos] 

Yo quería, de parte de los estudiantes, revalidar un tanto la opinión del profesor Oviedo, no porque suene a trasnochado las opiniones ni las actitudes críticas ni nada, sino porque somos nosotros los que mejor vivimos las paradojas, de hablarnos de los neocritics o de teorías contrapuestas actualmente, y nos ha brindado la oportunidad, el profesor Coleman de buscar un rasgo distintivo de la literatura latinoamericana como es la liberación de lo imaginario. Apenas se ha hablado en este simposium. Es decir, estamos acostumbrados a contar con un mundo legendario en Latinoamérica, con un mundo mítico que está integrado en las ficciones de Borges, y no se nos ha dicho nada. 

Estamos al borde de una ciencia ficción futurística, naciente en Latinoamérica, de una ficción alegórica y de una ficción super ya naturalística, totalmente desvasándo los terrenos del neorealismo, y no se nos ha dicho nada. Más que imposición de instrumentalidades críticas racionalistas de Europa u occidentales, o sajonas si queremos, de la crítica sajona, de los neocritics, lo que estamos viendo son síntomas nacientes totalmente auténticos que los pidió el profesor Oviedo el primer día, como signos de identidad de Latinoamérica. 

Si tomamos, por ejemplo, cualquier narrativa de Borges, vemos un hibridismo de lo imaginario, como he podido observar en unos libros que se han publicado en este departamento por el profesor Wheelock. No es solamente una imposición de esquemas o de los arquetipos de Jung o de las teorías de Northrop Frye, es simplemente un acercamiento a la imaginación, a las estructuras del imaginario de Borges, tal cual, es accesible hacerlo hoy día y de la manera más capaz. Por lo que respecta, a alguna de las paradojas que estoy experimentando en mí mismo, y posiblemente en algunos de los estudiantes, es que se nos habla de la estructura como entidad autónoma, que tiene varios significados. Ahora resulta que se nos dice que es enteramente signitiva, indicial, que nos guía. 

Más que una lectura comprometida, se nos dice que es una lectura de placer, que es un acto de seducción, que debe ser un goce. Estas contradicciones entre la subjetividad y la semántica de la obra no se han sacado aquí no sé por qué, que es lo que nos preocupa a nosotros, cómo recrear una obra, cómo liberar la imaginación de lo que ha dicho el profesor Coleman, ya sea de los medios culturales, de las sociedades en que vivimos, de las imposiciones políticas y demás. 

Yo creo que la literatura es algo más trascendente y más imaginaria. También creo, por lo que dijo el profesor Gutiérrez, que este caer en el círculo hermenéutico de autor, texto y lector, ya lo tenemos un tanto desfasado, no porque no sea así, evidentemente es así. Pero ahora se hace más recargo en la subjetividad, se hace más énfasis en la legibilidad, nos interesa descubrir cuáles son los síntomas y los rasgos verdaderos de esta creatividad de la literatura latinoamericana que la hacen tan accesible a nuestra lectura y a nuestro gusto. Y nada más. [aplausos] 

Estamos ya sobre el tiempo pero si algún panelista quiere hacer uso de la palabra, sería la última persona en hablar en esta jornada de la mañana. Primera jornada de la mañana. 

Ayer y hoy discutimos el concepto de modelo. Quiero hacer solo un comentario rápido. El problema con la palabra modelo es que es una palabra. Comparte el problema de todas las palabras. Son modelos. [risas] 

Habiendo sido tan corta esa intervención, podemos tener otra intervención. [risas] 

Yo quisiera agradecer a los estudiantes que constantemente en los intervalos entre las sesiones, fuera de aquí y ahora, las palabras de este joven estudiante. Han llamado la atención sobre lo interesante que podría haber sido este simposio si hubiera estado organizado por los estudiantes. [aplausos]

Ladies and gentlemen, may we have your attention. We're about to start the second of the morning session. That having to do with the plastic arts. If you will find a place where you are comfortable.

A mechanical problem. Our electronic equipment here is not Space-Agency level. Therefore I ask you when you come to the mic to address questions at any point, please talk directly into or across the mic so that the sound system can be picked up at the back.

One more item. As you speak into the microphone directing questions at the panel, would you kindly keep your rate of speech slow to moderate? Because the translators at the back have got to pick up your thought process and transmit it to others so that a little deliberation in the presentation of your question would be very helpful on the sending and receiving side.

We're now ready to start the second of the morning panels. As announced in our schedule, the panel before you will summarize with previous art panelists the salient points raised in the previous two days' sessions. The art panel chairwoman, Dore Ashton, you've met on the two preceding days. Dore's very considerable distinction, her position as a leading figure in American art criticism and her continuing concern with the development of arts and ideas in Europe and Latin America has made her the obvious choice to represent us at this stage of our deliberations.

With her, two distinguished figures. To my left, Mrs. Barbara Duncan of New York City, whose studies in the history of art, whose activities as a collector, and whose function as an art consultant have been extremely important to many of us, for she's been a catalytic figure in her office in New York City.

Her ideas are expressed in a collection which bears her name and which we're very proud to hold. To my right, Mr. Fernando Gamboa, the director of the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City. For years and years and years, it seems to me, we have been the recipients outside Mexico of exciting shows of work of young Mexican artists about whom we did not know when we were still being impressed with the stories of the great events of the '30s and '40s.

Fernando Gamboa is in real terms a forerunner. He's taken the risks and he's had the perception to find the valid in the new. We're extremely honored to have you with us, sir. At this point, as people find their chairs then, I will turn the meeting over to Dore Ashton, who will describe the ground rules.

We've more or less decided that señor Gamboa and Mrs. Duncan will attempt to give a constructive reconstruction of the kinds of problems posed and reverse the Gertrude Stein Syndrome. Then, the art panelists as well as the literature panelists will be speaking to these questions. I have asked for the last period for the participation of those people who are called students. I consider myself a student also, so I'm very careful how I use that word.

This afternoon, I would like to request that all the others who have come here and have something to say, please give me your name and the subject that you want to speak on at the end of the session on a piece of paper, so that in the afternoon we can have somewhat shaped statements by all the people who have not yet had a chance to make their statement. I'll now ask Fernando Gamboa to make his resume.

A difficult summary indeed. So much so that many things have been said.

We can't hear you.

I was saying that a summary is certainly difficult, since so many intelligent, subtle, fine, profound things have been said. We are going to try, at the risk of not betraying what has been said here by all the participants in the field of plastic arts, the ideas that in my opinion, in our opinion, are fundamental.

I am more optimistic than some of our friends who have spoken on different occasions, considering that this symposium is full of shortcomings and that it is not going to lead us anywhere. I would say that the symposium has been of great significance because it can lead us, it should lead us to several practical conclusions.

As to whether Latin American art exists today as a distinct expression, it is necessary to refer to Juan Acha's presentation, which acted as a detonator by stating that the answer is difficult because our art reveals what we are and what we want to be, as well as the plurality of our ethnic, historical, social, economic and cultural realities.

Acha added that critics have not yet laid the groundwork to create models that allow us to clearly recognize ourselves in our art and that criticism is scarce. For his part, Dore Ashton said that works of art, like fruits, have a special flavor that corresponds to their medium. He graciously said that Mohammed did not need to refer to camels to know that he was an Arab. In other words, he believes that national value is important, but that the artist's homeland is the universe.

Referring to criticism, Dore categorically asserted that its mission is not to prescribe models of operation to the artist, but to serve as a link between the creator and the public, with which Marta Traba, Aracy Amaral and all the other panelists, artists, critics and moderators agreed. Marta Traba and Jose Luis Cuevas agreed in seeing Latin American legitimacy only in certain tendencies of artists that Marta calls of resistance. If Szyszlo agrees in certain senses with Marta and Cuevas, Carlos Rodriguez presents a more open attitude.

Finally, the master Rufino Tamayo affirmed that every artist is planetary and that Latin Americans have an identity. He categorically asserts that he has identity. Everyone agrees that we have identity, although there are discrepancies of nuances. Regarding identity, Aracy Amaral postulates that our identity is plural. Jorge Alberto Manrique, meanwhile, is in favor of a dual identity, namely Western and non-Western at the same time.

The six magnificent participating artists defended their freedom by rejecting all models. They did so with the passion of their artistic convictions and with the zeal and warmth of the understanding of the values of their own creativity. In the end, they reaffirmed their tendency. Cuevas, his magnificent critical figuratism. Szyszlo, his lyrical abstractionism. Felguérez and Otero, their geometrism. Góngora, his [unintelligible 00:12:46] eroticism. And Rufino Tamayo, his chromatic and mythical world of pre-Hispanic and popular roots in the essences and in an exalted transposition.

Not to be left unmentioned are the timely and, in my opinion, superb opinions expressed at all times by moderators Damian Bayon and Kazuya Sakai. I have tried to make an objective summary, but there is a lot involved and I am sure that the dialogue will continue in that direction.

As a museum man and veteran museographer, I must point out that these professions also constitute a form of criticism by selecting, weighing and being intermediaries between the creator and the public. That is why I hope that everything that has been said in this symposium will be translated into facts that already have a favorable climate in our America. I am referring to the need to repeat periodically, no matter where, meetings of the magnitude of this one.

The urgency of creating research centers for Latin American art, both from the point of view of theory and art criticism, with abundant visual and informative information. The encouragement of publications. Brazil and Mexico are already interested in this kind of centers. This has been expressed, and there are signs that Austin and New York have the same interest.

As it urges itself to create broad and active circuits of artistic diffusion, I am pleased to announce that Mexico has already formed the first circuit with the museums of Bogota, Rio Janeiro, Caracas and Austin, the latter thanks to the valuable and enthusiastic collaboration of my colleague Donald Goodall. I am also pleased to announce that Mexico will systematically organize from next year onwards large circulating exhibitions of Latin American art in the museums of the cities mentioned above, holding them in the even years; 76, 78, etcetera.

The first exhibition will be a panorama that lays the foundations of the complexity, richness, maturity and unquestionable elevation that art in Latin America already has, based on works by the great masters from Mexico to Argentina. After that, exhibitions of artists from other generations and later on, even of specific tendencies, may follow.

That's why we must praise the magnificent action of Plural, Excelsior and the University of Texas in organizing this symposium and an exhibition that will mark a historic milestone in the development of Latin American art. I feel optimistic in the face of the skepticism or pessimism of some of our friends present here.

I cannot end without paying tribute to the precursors of these tasks. José Gómez Sicre, Jorge Romero Brest, Mário Pedrosa, an artificer, and the feisty Marta Traba, whose work in favor of our art has transcended all of Latin America.

My distinguished co-panelist from Mexico has given such a fine resume of the main events of yesterday that I choose to take the word 'original panel' and express some ideas that perhaps are not exactly a resume of what happened yesterday in a repetition of what he has so beautifully said, but pose perhaps a few different ideas based on the experience I've had wearing several different hats as collector, art historian, et cetera.

You've heard from the head of the School of Latin American Studies and from the director of collections of the Art of the Americas program that they definitely do believe in the existence of a Latin American art. The Art of the Americas indicates, as señor Gamboa has said, that this is really an inter-American effort. I think we should consider that while we all have European roots, that we also all have had continents to open and a pattern of migration and immigration.

Perhaps this has brought a freshness throughout the area that is now emerging visibly in Latin America. Therefore, my answer to does present-day Latin American art exist as a distinct expression is yes. The collective cultural experience in the kaleidoscope or mosaic formation of the Latin American region has produced a unique composite of artistic expression which could only emerge from that region and combination of aesthetic achievement in plastic art.

It's been especially evident in the post-war generation of artists, both in national and international terms. The Latin American artist is truly cosmopolitan in this sense. The impact of international travel and communication, which has been only possible since the late '50s and is accelerating each year, maybe a contributing factor to the distinctive expression of Latin American art.

Most of the artists are in contact with both national and international realities, in contrast to the School of Paris and School of New York in its existence, despite specific geographic locations of the artist. The artist speaks for himself within a global scope and often brings a cosmic sense, perhaps as we've heard, related to the literature of the area.

The Latin American artists of this post-war generation have achieved individual vision, plastic expression, and a new horizon in the world of art. It is recognizable outside national boundaries due to the strong personalities achieved by their individuality. I recognize them whether I see them in Switzerland, Australia, or wherever I go. They have a common denominator of a discipline as artists and a breadth of vision in their work.

Another question I would like to comment on, since Señor Gamboa did not touch on this, is can an artist produce independently a foreign interests? Contemporary Latin American artists, as I have said, are a very cosmopolitan group of people, and cultural exchange has been accelerated by the jet airplane. However, the strong sense of personal identity, which has been repeatedly mentioned as the outstanding trait of the creative artist, leaves the artist free to choose selectively his models and influences, whether at home or abroad.

The Latin American artists appear to work on their inner reality and vision, which usually combines national and international models in a unique way. The word interest bothers me like feedback has seemed inappropriate to others. As the wife of a so-called multinational businessman, I've been privileged to travel around and live in Latin America. During the 25 years of this experience, I have noted what seems to me a misunderstanding of the healthy role of economics within a country.

Cultural life in the artistic sector is usually the first to suffer in a period of depression and the type of plans that señor Gamboa has been speaking of can only be realized by countries and regions which are enjoying economic prosperity.

Let's face it. Many artists migrate to centers where opportunity and creative activity exist. Fortunately their identity is within themselves and as señor Tamayo says, "The travels and the migrations of the Latin American artists has served to give them what he further described as a universality or the sign of the universal language." To return briefly to economics, since it is not my major field, in the inter American area as we are having here, a conference of such as this is taking place in the field of business.

The next step is to get a lively exchange of ideas between the cultural and the economic sector. Many businessmen have a humanistic education and intuitively capture the inner vision of the artist's creative work. In return, the conscientious ones whom I admire believe that growth and creation of jobs helps to solve the problems of underdevelopment, which so much concern the artists.

In regard to what sort of critical feedback the Latin American artists face, general agreement on the symposium that the plastic creation of the artist is the essence of the discussion. We should really have looked at the Plural exhibition first and then started the verbal counterpart. The creativity built on a creativity, though I prefer Dore Ashton's analogy with the critic serving the role of a hostess, lead the public to see and then let them choose and thus play a secondary role.

My husband heads a group called ACCIÓN, of Latin American and American businessmen devoted to this idea. My suggestion is that members of diverse groups such as ACCIÓN, Resistencia of the artists, should have a conference under the auspices of the University School of Latin American Studies. We all tend to confer with people of the same sensibilities and forget that others are working towards similar goals in different ways.

We have yet to define the differences between art history and art criticism and a number of our discussants have requested further comments on this subject. We are fortunate to have among us distinguished art historians both from North and South America. I hope they will speak up.

The lack of a well-established art historical framework for Latin American art based on an objective research and available in a number of languages seems to me to be the reason for the constant search for an identity recognizable both in national and international terms. The achievements of this plural, mosaic, kaleidoscopic movement of the last 30 or 40 years need to be deeply analyzed and put into perspective within a scholarly procedure.

It is a complicated task, but a lot of groundwork has been laid by a devoted group of scholars throughout the Americas. What is lacking is a synthesis of their investigation into a body of research, material available for future scholarship, and accompanied by a complete bibliography.

In my opinion, this would strengthen the role of the objective critic in relation to the Latin American artist by giving an established place in the exciting history of contemporary art to the undeniable contributions of the Latin American artist to some of the movements now recognized as vanguard. The essential question was asked yesterday and I believe it was asked by a student. How do we delineate the movements and currents in Latin American art? Speak out, charla bate-papo.

I'll take my three minutes. I'd like to mention that señor Oviedo showed some irritation at the repetition of questions which he says have been discussed since the early '30s and chewed over too much. I take that rather as a symptom of the fact that those questions are still alive and that the answers that we give here are unsatisfactory and inconclusive and therefore worth pursuing.

As far as I can see in the art, the plastic art aspect here -and I think Ronald Christ performed a very important service by emphasizing the fact that literary critics are dealing in the same medium as that which they are criticizing, whereas art critics always have to suffer by being translators into another language and always, I should say, always inadequate. Any art critic always feels inadequate -that it is a little more difficult.

The questions that were raised fall into, I think, very few categories, but all of them worth pursuing in a more coherent way. On the practical side, as señor Gamboa pointed out, there is much to be done. It seems to me that all the questions circulated around the problem of diffusion, which is not a problem of South America or North America, but a problem everywhere, and the mechanics of that diffusion, I believe that Mrs. Duncan is correct in saying that we must have a richer literature, more references. People should be able to find, to have access to coherent accounts of the past. We do have the means in such symposia of being a little sharper in how we would approach that.

On the impractical or the nonpractical side, it seems to me that the old chestnut that possibly Mr. Oviedo thinks is bypassed but seems to be always with us, the old problem as to whether there is such a thing as an imminent history or an autonomous history of the plastic arts, or formal history, or whether there is something which one of the students used the word that he was the first to use and I think is still a very useful word, whether there's something transcendent in the plastic arts to which we should turn our serious attention.

Una cosa más. Cuando hable por el micrófono dirigiendo preguntas al panel, ¿podría mantener un ritmo lento o moderado? Porque los traductores de atrás tienen que captar su proceso de pensamiento y transmitirlo a los demás, de modo que un poco de deliberación en la presentación de su pregunta sería muy útil en el lado emisor y receptor.

Estamos listos para comenzar el segundo de los paneles de la mañana. Como anunciamos en nuestro programa, el panel que tienen ante ustedes resumirá con los anteriores panelistas de arte los puntos más destacados planteados en las sesiones de los dos días anteriores. A la presidenta del panel de arte, Dore Ashton, ya la han conocido en los dos días anteriores. La considerable distinción de Dore, su posición como figura destacada de la crítica de arte estadounidense y su continua preocupación por el desarrollo de las artes y las ideas en Europa y América Latina la han convertido en la elección obvia para representarnos en esta fase de nuestras deliberaciones.

Con ella, dos distinguidas figuras. A mi izquierda, la Sra. Barbara Duncan, de Nueva York, cuyos estudios de historia del arte, cuyas actividades como coleccionista y cuya función como asesora de arte han sido sumamente importantes para muchos de nosotros, pues ha sido una figura catalizadora en su oficina de Nueva York.

Sus ideas están plasmadas en una colección que lleva su nombre y que estamos muy orgullosos de poseer. A mi derecha, el Sr. Fernando Gamboa, director del Museo de Arte Moderno de Ciudad de México. Durante años y años y años, me parece, hemos sido receptores fuera de México de apasionantes exposiciones de obras de jóvenes artistas mexicanos de los que no sabíamos nada cuando aún nos impresionaban las historias de los grandes acontecimientos de los años 30 y 40 del siglo pasado.

Fernando Gamboa es en términos reales un precursor. Ha asumido los riesgos y ha tenido la percepción de encontrar lo válido en lo nuevo. Nos sentimos muy honrados de tenerle con nosotros, señor. En este punto, mientras la gente encuentra sus sillas entonces, cederé la reunión a Dore Ashton, que describirá las reglas básicas.

Hemos decidido más o menos que el señor Gamboa y la señora Duncan intentarán hacer una reconstrucción constructiva de los tipos de problemas planteados e invertir el síndrome de Gertrude Stein. Después, tanto los panelistas de arte como los de literatura hablarán de estas cuestiones. He pedido para el último período la participación de aquellas personas que se denominan estudiantes. Yo también me considero un estudiante, así que soy muy cuidadoso con el uso de esa palabra.

Esta tarde, quisiera pedir a todos los demás que han venido aquí y tienen algo que decir, que por favor me den su nombre y el tema sobre el que quieren hablar al final de la sesión en un papel, para que por la tarde podamos tener declaraciones un poco perfiladas de todas las personas que todavía no han tenido la oportunidad de hacer su declaración. Ahora le voy a pedir a Fernando Gamboa que haga su resumen.

Un resumen ciertamente difícil. Tanto que se han dicho muchas cosas.

Decía que un resumen ciertamente difícil en tanto que se han dicho tantas cosas inteligentes, sutiles, finas, profundas. Vamos a intentar, a riesgo de no traicionar lo dicho aquí por todos los participantes del campo de artes plásticas, las ideas que a mi juicio, a juicio nuestro, son fundamentales.

Yo me muestro más optimista que algunos de nuestros amigos que en distintas ocasiones han intervenido, considerando que este simposium está cargado de deficiencias y que no nos va a llevar a ninguna parte. Yo diría que el simposium ha resultado de gran significación porque nos puede llevar, nos debe llevar a varias conclusiones prácticas.

En cuanto a si existe el arte latinoamericano actual como expresión distinta es preciso referirse a la ponencia de Juan Acha, que operó como detonador al plantear que la respuesta se dificulta en cuanto a que nuestro arte revela lo que somos y lo que queremos ser, así como también la pluralidad de nuestras realidades étnicas, históricas, sociales, económicas y culturales.

Acha agregó que la crítica no ha sentado aún las bases para crear modelos que nos permitan reconocernos claramente en nuestro arte y que la crítica es escasa. Por su parte, Dore Ashton manifestó que las obras de arte como las frutas tienen un sabor especial que corresponde a su medio. Dijo graciosamente que Mahoma no necesitó referirse a camellos para saber que era árabe. En otras palabras, considera que el valor nacional es importante, pero que la patria del artista es el universo.

Refiriéndose a la crítica, Dore aseveró categóricamente que la misión de esta no es prescribir modelos de operación al artista, sino que sirve, que debe servir de enlace entre el creador y el público, con lo que después concuerdan Marta Traba, Aracy Amaral y todos los otros panelistas, tanto artistas como críticos y moderadores. Marta Traba y José Luis Cuevas coincidieron en ver legitimidad latinoamericana solo en ciertas tendencias de artistas que Marta llama de resistencia. Si Szyszlo concuerda en ciertos sentidos con Marta y Cuevas, Carlos Rodríguez presenta una actitud más abierta.

Por último, el maestro Rufino Tamayo nos afirmó que todo artista es planetario y de que los latinoamericanos tenemos identidad. Él rotundamente asienta tener la identidad. En esto de que tenemos identidad todos están de acuerdo, aunque hay discrepancias de matices. En lo que respecta a la identidad, Aracy Amaral postula que nuestra identidad es plural. Jorge Alberto Manrique, mientras tanto, es partidario de una identidad dual, a saber occidental y a la vez no occidental.

Los seis magníficos artistas que participan defendieron su libertad rechazando todo modelo. Lo hicieron con la pasión de sus convicciones artísticas y con el celo y el calor del entendimiento de los valores de su propia creatividad. En el fondo reafirmaron con esto su tendencia. Cuevas, su magnífico figuratismo crítico. Szyszlo, su abstraccionismo lírico. Felguérez y Otero, su geometrismo. Góngora, su [unintelligible 00:12:46] erótico. Y Rufino Tamayo, su mundo cromático y mítico de raíz prehispánica y popular en las esencias y en una exaltada transposición.

No debe dejarse de mencionar las oportunas y a mi ver magníficas opiniones que en todo momento emitieron los moderadores Damián Bayón y Kazuya Sakai. He tratado de hacer un resumen objetivo, pero hay mucho de por medio y seguramente que proseguirá el diálogo en ese sentido.

Como hombre de museo y museógrafo veterano debo hacer notar que estas profesiones constituyen también una forma de crítica al seleccionar, ponderar y ser intermediarios entre el creador y el público. Por eso mismo aspiro a que todo lo dicho en este simposio se concrete en hechos que ya tienen un clima propicio en nuestra América. Me refiero a la necesidad de que se repitan periódicamente, no importa en dónde, reuniones de la envergadura de ésta.

La urgencia de crear centros de investigación del arte latinoamericano, tanto desde el punto de vista de la teoría como de la crítica de arte, provistas de abundante información visual, informativa. El estímulo a las publicaciones. Brasil y México ya están interesados en esta clase de centros. Así lo han manifestado y hay señales que el mismo interés tienen Austin y Nueva York.

Como urge a sí mismo crear amplios y activos circuitos de difusión artística, me complace anunciar que México ya ha formado el primer circuito con los museos de Bogotá, Río Janeiro, Caracas y Austin, este último gracias a la valiosa y entusiasta colaboración de mi colega Donald Goodall. También es grato anunciar que México organizará sistemáticamente a partir del año próximo grandes muestras circulantes de arte latinoamericano en los museos de las ciudades antes mencionadas, celebrándolas en los años pares; 76, 78, etcétera.

La primera muestra será un panorama que siente las bases de la complejidad, de la riqueza, de la madurez, de la elevación incuestionable que tiene ya el arte en Latinoamérica a base de obras de los grandes maestros desde México hasta Argentina. Después podrán venir exposiciones de artistas de otras generaciones y más tarde inclusive de tendencias específicas.

Por lo mismo debemos exaltar la acción magnífica de Plural, Excelsior y la Universidad de Texas al realizar este simposio y una exposición que marcarán un hito histórico en el desarrollo del arte latinoamericano. Yo me siento optimista frente, en fin, al escepticismo o pesimismo de algunos de nuestros amigos aquí presentes.

No puedo terminar sin rendir tributo a los precursores de estas tareas. José Gómez Sicre, Jorge Romero Brest, Mário Pedrosa, un artífice, y la batalladora Marta Traba, cuya labor a favor de nuestro arte ha trascendido a toda América Latina.

Uno, dos, tres. Parece que funciona, pero tienes que usarlo muy cerca. Un micrófono de mano sería mejor, creo. ¿Puedes ponerlo así? No está muy bien. ¿Crees que no funcionará? Creo que funcionará. ¿Así? ¿Me oyes?

Mi distinguido co-panelista de México ha hecho un resumen tan fino de los principales acontecimientos de ayer que opto por tomar la palabra 'panel origina' y expresar algunas ideas que tal vez no sean exactamente un resumen de lo que ocurrió ayer en una repetición de lo que él ha dicho tan bellamente, pero plantean tal vez algunas ideas diferentes basadas en la experiencia que he tenido usando varios sombreros diferentes como coleccionista, historiador del arte, etcétera.

Usted ha escuchado del director de la Escuela de Estudios Latinoamericanos y del director de colecciones del programa Arte de las Américas que ellos definitivamente sí creen en la existencia de un arte latinoamericano. El Arte de las Américas indica, como ha dicho el señor Gamboa, que se trata realmente de un esfuerzo interamericano. Creo que deberíamos considerar que, si bien todos tenemos raíces europeas, también todos hemos tenido continentes que abrir y un patrón de migración e inmigración.

Tal vez esto haya aportado una frescura en toda la zona que ahora emerge visiblemente en América Latina. Por lo tanto, mi respuesta a la pregunta de si existe el arte latinoamericano actual como expresión diferenciada es afirmativa. La experiencia cultural colectiva en la formación de caleidoscopio o mosaico de la región latinoamericana ha producido un compuesto único de expresión artística que sólo podía surgir de esa región y combinación de logros estéticos en el arte plástico.

Ha sido especialmente evidente en la generación de artistas de posguerra, tanto en términos nacionales como internacionales. El artista latinoamericano es verdaderamente cosmopolita en este sentido. El impacto de los viajes y las comunicaciones internacionales, que sólo ha sido posible desde finales de los años 50 y se acelera cada año, quizá sea un factor que contribuya a la expresión distintiva del arte latinoamericano.

La mayoría de los artistas están en contacto con realidades tanto nacionales como internacionales, en contraste con la Escuela de París y la Escuela de Nueva York en su existencia, a pesar de ubicaciones geográficas específicas del artista. El artista habla por sí mismo dentro de un ámbito global y a menudo aporta un sentido cósmico, tal vez como hemos oído, relacionado con la literatura de la zona.

Los artistas latinoamericanos de esta generación de posguerra han logrado una visión individual, una expresión plástica y un nuevo horizonte en el mundo del arte. Son reconocibles fuera de las fronteras nacionales debido a la fuerte personalidad que han logrado con su individualidad. Los reconozco tanto si los veo en Suiza como en Australia o dondequiera que vaya. Tienen en común una disciplina como artistas y una amplitud de miras en su obra.

Otra pregunta que me gustaría comentar, ya que el señor Gamboa no tocó este tema, es ¿puede un artista producir independientemente intereses extranjeros? Los artistas latinoamericanos contemporáneos, como he dicho, son un grupo de personas muy cosmopolitas, y el intercambio cultural se ha acelerado gracias al avión a reacción. Sin embargo, el fuerte sentido de identidad personal, que se ha mencionado repetidamente como rasgo sobresaliente del artista creador, deja al artista en libertad de elegir selectivamente sus modelos e influencias, ya sea en su país o en el extranjero.

Los artistas latinoamericanos parecen trabajar sobre su realidad interior y su visión, que suele combinar modelos nacionales e internacionales de forma única. La palabra interés me molesta como a otros les ha parecido inapropiada. Como esposa de un supuesto empresario multinacional, he tenido el privilegio de viajar y vivir en América Latina. Durante los 25 años de esta experiencia, he observado lo que me parece una incomprensión del sano rol de la economía dentro de un país.

La vida cultural en el sector artístico suele ser la primera en sufrir en un periodo de depresión y el tipo de planes de los que ha estado hablando el señor Gamboa sólo pueden realizarlos los países y regiones que disfrutan de prosperidad económica.

Reconozcámoslo. Muchos artistas emigran a centros donde existen oportunidades y actividad creativa. Afortunadamente su identidad está dentro de ellos mismos y como dice el señor Tamayo, «Los viajes y las migraciones de los artistas latinoamericanos han servido para darles lo que él describió más adelante como una universalidad o el signo del lenguaje universal.» Para volver brevemente a la economía, ya que no es mi campo principal, en el área interamericana como la que estamos teniendo aquí, una conferencia de este tipo tiene lugar en el campo de los negocios.

El siguiente paso es conseguir un intercambio animado de ideas entre el sector cultural y el económico. Muchos empresarios tienen una formación humanística y captan intuitivamente la visión interior de la obra creativa del artista. A cambio, los concienciados a los que admiro creen que el crecimiento y la creación de empleo ayudan a resolver los problemas del subdesarrollo, que tanto preocupan a los artistas.

En respuesta a la crítica a la que se enfrentan los artistas latinoamericanos, acuerdo general en el simposio en que la creación plástica del artista es la esencia de la discusión. En realidad, deberíamos haber examinado primero la exposición Plural y después haber iniciado la contrapartida verbal. La creatividad construida sobre una creatividad, aunque prefiero la analogía de Dore Ashton con el crítico cumpliendo el rol de azafata, llevar al público a ver y luego dejarle elegir y así desempeñar un rol secundario.

Mi marido dirige un grupo llamado ACCIÓN, de empresarios latinoamericanos y estadounidenses dedicados a esta idea. Mi sugerencia es que miembros de diversos grupos como ACCIÓN, Resistencia de los artistas, celebren una conferencia bajo los auspicios de la Escuela Universitaria de Estudios Latinoamericanos. Todos tendemos a conferenciar con personas de las mismas sensibilidades y olvidamos que otros están trabajando por objetivos similares de maneras diferentes.

Aún tenemos que definir las diferencias entre historia del arte y crítica de arte, y varios de nuestros ponentes han solicitado más comentarios al respecto. Tenemos la suerte de contar entre nosotros con distinguidos historiadores del arte tanto de Norteamérica como de Sudamérica. Espero que se expresen.

La falta de un marco histórico del arte latinoamericano bien establecido, basado en una investigación objetiva y disponible en varios idiomas, me parece la razón de la búsqueda constante de una identidad reconocible tanto en términos nacionales como internacionales. Los logros de este movimiento plural, mosaico y caleidoscópico de los últimos 30 o 40 años necesitan ser analizados en profundidad y puestos en perspectiva dentro de un procedimiento académico.

Es una tarea complicada, pero un grupo de estudiosos de todo el continente americano ha sentado muchas bases. Lo que falta es una síntesis de su investigación en un cuerpo de investigación, material disponible para futuros estudiosos, y acompañado de una bibliografía completa.

En mi opinión, esto reforzaría el rol del crítico objetivo en relación con el artista latinoamericano al otorgar un lugar establecido en la apasionante historia del arte contemporáneo a las innegables contribuciones del artista latinoamericano a algunos de los movimientos hoy reconocidos como de vanguardia. La pregunta esencial se planteó ayer y creo que la formuló un estudiante. ¿Cómo delimitamos los movimientos y corrientes en el arte latinoamericano? Habla, charla bate-papo.

Tomaré mis tres minutos. Me gustaría mencionar que el señor Oviedo mostró cierta irritación por la repetición de cuestiones que, según él, se han debatido desde principios de los años 30 y se han masticado demasiado. Lo tomo más bien como un síntoma de que esas preguntas siguen vivas y de que las respuestas que damos aquí son insatisfactorias e inconclusas y, por lo tanto, vale la pena continuar.

Por lo que puedo ver en el arte, el aspecto del arte plástico aquí -y creo que Ronald Christ prestó un servicio muy importante al subrayar el hecho de que los críticos literarios tratan en el mismo medio que aquello que critican, mientras que los críticos de arte siempre tienen que sufrir por ser traductores a otro idioma y siempre, debería decir, siempre inadecuados. Cualquier crítico de arte siempre se siente inadecuado, que es un poco más difícil.

Las cuestiones que se plantearon se encuadran, en mi opinión, en muy pocas categorías, pero todas ellas merecen ser tratadas de forma más coherente. En el aspecto práctico, como señaló el señor Gamboa, queda mucho por hacer. Me parece que todas las cuestiones que circulan en torno al problema de la difusión, que no es un problema de América del Sur o de América del Norte, sino un problema en todas partes, y la mecánica de esa difusión, creo que la señora Duncan tiene razón al decir que debemos tener una literatura más rica, más referencias. La gente debe poder encontrar, tener acceso a relatos coherentes del pasado. En este tipo de simposios tenemos los medios para ser un poco más agudos en la forma de enfocar esto.

En el lado no práctico o no práctico, me parece que la vieja castaña que posiblemente el Sr. Oviedo piensa que está soslayada pero que parece estar siempre con nosotros, el viejo problema de si existe algo así como una historia inminente o una historia autónoma de las artes plásticas, o historia formal, o si existe algo que uno de los estudiantes utilizó la palabra que él fue el primero en utilizar y creo que sigue siendo una palabra muy útil, si existe algo trascendente en las artes plásticas a lo que deberíamos dirigir nuestra seria atención.

Thirdly, it's quite apparent, and I don't think this is limited to Latin American artists, that social turbulence everywhere has forced us all into a position of malaise. I think it's very important that that malaise be recognized, its components identified. In the plastic arts, certainly, we must recognize that there are tensions everywhere.

I come from a large city, and we all seem to agree that art movements as such, seem to have a cosmopolitan source, and that large cities, large centers seem to sponsor definition, that these socially turbulent problems affect the plastic artist as it affects the literary artist, and they must be dealt with, as I think Marta Traba has attempted to throw off the old mannerisms and to take a position to which one can respond.

Finally, I want to say that there are more parallels than I feel have been drawn with other experiences, that if you are an artist working in New York City, you're subject to exactly the same kinds of problems that you are in Latin America, fundamentally, because the world certainly is interchanging its worst traits, unfortunately, and those things must be identified apart from the individual problems of identity.

You all know that the North American artist still suffers from his colonial psyche, and he responds variously, either by becoming what someone called a jet-set artist, moving around a great deal, or by practicing the kind of psychological resistance that Marta Traba recommends. There are many people right in New York City doing that very thing.

I think we should look to Europe for a parallel also, and to recognize the force of accidental history, or the appearance of, I'm going to use the great man theory, that in Europe, you are speaking here about Latin American art, and what seems to be the cement, is the fact that Latin languages, Portuguese and Spanish, are used in this continent called Latin America.

However, in Europe, we have many different languages in many different countries, sharing certain Latin traditions, ancient Greek traditions, Aristotle, etc. All the same, in Holland, to this day, there exists a very strong movement, which art historians are wont to think exists because there was a Mondrian.

There are also the opposite, and that frequently happens in cities. The fact that very small European countries do have artists who identify themselves with their country to some degree, but not totally. I think Fernando performed a service in pointing out that all of the artists testifying here, first defended their artistic liberty. I think any artist that I ever knew would do the same, it's mainly theoreticians and critics who get involved with those other questions.

Now, I would like to ask the panelists if they wish to speak now, the panelists from both panels, and after that, we will turn to the questions from the other people gathered here. Carlos Rodríguez?

I wanted, as my final intervention, to refer to two points. One, perhaps a little particular, the other, I believe, much more general. The first derives from the statements made yesterday by Maestro Rufino Tamayo. The importance of master Tamayo's work for me is so extraordinary that he is the only painter I have cited as the creator of the basis for the authentication of Latin American painting, which I mentioned in my first intervention. I believe that the statements of a man like him are extremely important.

Yesterday I learned that the American continent is divided, not only as I thought, into an Anglo-Saxon part and a Latin American part, but that Latin America is divided into two parts. Mexico, on the one hand, and the rest of the other countries, on the other. Maestro Tamayo has also said that in my country the population is divided into Indians and Creoles, and that is true. What happens is that in Peru we criollos are mestizos, cholos and zambos, and that we ignore the definition of criollo given by the dictionary of the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language.

It is also true that there is a sculpture of the Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro. Incidentally that sculpture was given by its author, an American sculpture, to a complacent mayor, during the dictatorship of Marshal Benavides. Peruvians who care little about art do not take it into account and never go to see it. Only tourists go to see it.

The second point refers more to what was dealt with in the art symposium. I believe that, unlike, for example, what happened in the literature symposium, where it is evident what Professor Rodriguez Monegal said, that literary criticism is a genre of literature. In the art symposium it is evident that art criticism is not a genre of painting or sculpture. This is a very special situation to which I would like to draw the attention, by way of conclusion, of my fellow critics.

On the one hand, and I think this is very good, the painters, the artists, have said that they are only interested in the criticism that comes from themselves, self-criticism. I think this is very good. This should lead us to reflect on the limits and possibilities of our craft. Instead of coming out of this symposium with conclusions, which are always dangerous, I propose that we leave with concerns and worries about our craft, which could perhaps polarize into an alternative.

It is possible, everything is possible, that there is a terrorist escalation of the avant-garde, but it is also possible, I suspect evidently, that there is a terrorist escalation of criticism. Thank you.

I would like to refer to one of the remarks made by Mrs. Duncan, which I find very interesting. Her reference to the poor economic situation of Latin American countries and the way in which this affects, in one way or another, artistic creation. Perhaps it is related to the specifically economic problem, but it is not exactly the same, another one, which is the one that refers to education.

Perhaps, to a greater extent, it affects, and generally for the worse, the more coherent or freer, in some cases, or easier development of artistic creation, the lack of education in a receiving public.

When I speak of education, I am not referring so much, at this moment, although it is certainly of the utmost importance, to school education at primary levels, and to the possibility of an appreciation of the work by very broad strata of the population, but something that is primary, that necessarily precedes that situation of a more general acceptance, such as the poor education of the upper and wealthy classes and the lack of education of people in power, of people in government positions.

Certainly, the wealth accumulated in a city like Mexico or even Caracas is much less than that accumulated in cities in the United States, but not only that, but people who have money don't buy. People who have money don't donate, people who have money don't help museums. Not only is this the problem of course, but people in positions of command and government are not interested in these aspects either, but only to a very limited extent.

I believe that Fernando Gamboa, what he has of ghost because he travels so much, and of magician on the other hand, comes from being able to stretch a ridiculous budget to make a peculiar alchemy and to be able with a few cents to do something worthwhile at the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City. The problem is not that the country is so poor, which it is, but that being so poor, it allocates a truly ridiculous percentage of its budget to this type of activities.

I would also like to, if I have a half minute or wait?

One minute.

I would like to make a reference to the criticism, something that was a little bit on paper yesterday. What Mrs. Duncan has said has also incited me a little, and finally, what Carlos Rodriguez Saavedra has said. To insist on the fact that it is for me too, by the way, what was said yesterday by Dore Ashton, the critic, and by many painters. The critic is not so much that bridge between art and the public. It is already a step. It is worse to say that the critic is the judge or that the critic is the one who dictates the rules to follow.

The bridging attitude is also an attitude that I find very suspicious, and in which I do not really believe. The critic is the extreme point, the critic in the end is just another receiver. Perhaps a receiver of excellence because of what is supposed to be his preparation, but he is a receiver and his attitude is fundamental. Not for the artist as creator. I do believe that for the work as such, because that is how I understand the work, it is not fulfilled, but insofar as it is perceived by someone.

Well, the critic is only one of the perceivers who expresses his perception, who reflects on the work. Thank you.

I would like to ask a special favor of the person in charge of this meeting. I don't know if Mr. Gudolf is in the room at the moment, or someone who is in his place. Can it be you, Doll? I don't know who. Who is in charge of this meeting?

Professor Gudolf, I want to ask you for a favor.

The favor is this. In view of the miracle you were able to perform, getting the authorities of your country to allow me to enter the United States for exactly 14 days, from October 26 to November 10. In view of the fact that I came from Caracas and that I have been able to make four speeches, one of three minutes and three of two minutes, what I would like to ask you to give as a final point to my speeches, is if you grant me, exceptionally, five minutes, otherwise, I prefer not to speak.

Thank you. Sorry, Dore, I didn't know who to ask. I didn't know if it was you or Professor Gudolf.

In these meetings, it is customary to reach a conciliation of the opposites in the final session, out of politeness. I ask, on the other hand, that a clarification be reached in the definition of these opposites. When Aracy Amaral, in his intelligent and lucid intervention, describes us as an occupied continent.

When Jose Luis Cuevas, in a tight struggle that has been going on for almost 20 years now, through his admirable work and his human behavior, saves an artistic space from being confused with the extraterritorial activities of party politics, nor with the frivolities of the pseudo-avant-garde. When Gomez Sicre, who inexplicably was not invited to chair the art panel as was his right for having been the pioneer in the conception of a different Latin American art, dares to point out the originality of the Morales Botero generation, as opposed to the American or European models.

When other colleagues at this meeting, despite their frank minority, raise a frontal conflict with the dominant tone that I think I recognized in the colloquium, with their panic to pronounce the word “regional”, the socialist way or with their continuous accountability to Western culture, I believe that we must not be docile or condescending, but confront that tone with convincing arguments.

I think that what has been clarified in the reunion, is that artists and critics move with relative freedom between two options, to recognize that dependence does exist, and subsequently reject it as a pressure of culture, mass media and an evidently ideological technology on the part of the emitting centers, Europe or the United States. Or to ignore it, the dependence, and therefore, to accept it and integrate with it, camouflaging it with the theory several times stated in this meeting that we are an economically underdeveloped continent, but culturally developed.

Which is tantamount to saying that we have peoples idiotized by hunger and ignorance, and intellectuals enlightened by French food and American pragmatism. Or accept the defeat of art, as a system or language capable of transmitting meanings that enrich the increasingly impoverished codes that are read to the public, or fight against this pessimism, affirming art's capacity to transmit meanings.

Affirming its spiritual value and its poetic dimension, however old these words may seem, operating a resacralization of art in a sick society, by what Adorno calls, “The passion of the palpable”. Such responsibility of the artist and the critic can only be measured by his work, by the coherence of its internal structure and the will of that structure to be both history and sedimented social content.

I quote Adorno again, “Instead of being decoration or entertainment of small groups”, I don't mind that Monegal accuses me again of having only one idea. The best literature and the most splendid art have been made by maniacs, by writers of a single theme, like Onetti, of a single book. As for example, that immense Juan Rulfo, who has not even received a mention in this Latin American Literature Encounter.

Or single-image artists, such as Mexico's Ricardo Martinez. Insisting one last time on that single idea, I will say that the revaluation of the region as the natural context of the plastic space, the systematic study of the structure of the work in order to dismantle it and make it understand as fully as possible to the public, the definitive incidence that art and criticism can have on our confused, ambiguous societies, as has been said here, and in need of any enlightening contribution, are specific forms of a general fight that converges, in my opinion, on the same point, the change of a reality that covers us day by day with opprobrium. Thank you.

Mr. Bayon.

I wanted to add something that I think has not been said. Someone yesterday, as if in passing, I think it was an artist, mentioned that criticism also has a creative function, and I applauded, but nobody heard me, because I am absolutely convinced that we critics have a creative function, as creative as that of the artists, our friends, let nobody misunderstand.

That creative function of ours, parallel to that of the artists and as respectable as theirs, even though it is based on their work, I received that lesson many years ago when I read Octavio Paz's The Bow and the Lyre. When he made me understand, in an advanced chapter of the book, something that I, perhaps due to modesty, had never thought of, and that was that in contemporary art there is no advanced or avant-garde contemporary art that does not run parallel to criticism, which neither dictates it nor makes it totally explicit, but which is parallel to it.

Octavio Paz says, since Apollinaire, or Apollinaire commenting on the cubists, the artist and critic, we march together, sometimes in a bad way, because we are not allowed to hold hands, but not to guide them.

When I write, I never write for the artists, I write for the people, because it seems to me that I am an intermediary and that is why I write simply, but at the same time I have the secret hope that the artist will read me or read us.

As the artist functions at all levels by intuition, the artist also has to know, when in the criticism he reads in the newspaper or in the magazine, there are elements that can be useful to him, as when one looks in the mirror to know if he has the right tie, or there are elements that are not useful to the artist at all. At that moment he leaves us, he puts us in a drawer, and he has every reason to do so.

Let us come almost to the end of these meetings, remembering that, indeed, good or bad, we art critics have a creative function, and that we can live and justify ourselves, nothing more.

There is a question from el señor Janis Palma Castroman, and then José Luis Cuevas wishes to speak, and then, after that, we'll keep going. Mr. Castroman? Miss, perdón.

I think there is a difference between artists living in New York or in Tucumán or Maracaibo. Because of a comment made by Mr. Manrique yesterday, I have this question, in the case of a young Latin American artist, who for some reason is producing his work outside Latin America, let's say the United States, how valid is that expression that is born within an environment that offers different conflicts than those that exist in his country?

Is it possible for this artist to avoid the degeneration of his message in relation to his country of origin by being physically distant from it? In other words, can this work be considered essentially Latin American in its totality?

José Luis Cuevas? Is there anyone? You want to answer that question?

Very briefly, because a number of these young artists come through my office in New York and I talk with them, I think the answer is yes. Because, as I said, I feel that they come with their inner formation from their own country. They've come, really, in search of the type of cosmopolitan inquiry into the art of the modern world. I feel, as of this point, that they have not lost the sense of identity, if I've understood your question correctly. Now, we all face that what Marta speaks of repeatedly, the danger of a global culture.

I'm very much in agreement with her, that the world will lose many elements of personality if this happens. I think, as of this moment, it is not happening.

I would like to request that the other panelists who wish to speak will speak at the beginning of this afternoon's session and that we allow the questions from the students now. Is that all right? That's how we planned it. Señor Manrique.

Are there other questions from students and visitors this morning? If not, then we can start by asking José Luis Cuevas to make his statement now.

I must admit that during my stay here in this symposium I have been too sparing in my interventions, mostly due to my state of health and medical recommendations. I am not allowed certain emotional outbursts, and these outbursts, of course, I prefer to reserve them for my pictorial work. However, I cannot help but be irritated with Marta Traba in the face of this intentional happy ending she is trying to draw, in which we are all going to leave very happy.

I have seen the eagerness of some of my colleagues, especially Mexicans, to establish profitable relationships.

I must say that I have always distinguished myself, besides having distinguished myself in other fields, for being an anti-conformist. There has been an attempt to create a kind of image that both Marta and I, or also the stupendous intervention of Miss Amaral, have been marked by a somewhat retrograde attitude in the face of avant-garde and very advanced attitudes of the Mexican representation.

I must therefore say, for those who are not informed, that in my country I have always represented an anti-conformist attitude, a fighting attitude, in the 50's, in the face of a Mexican painting that was in a dead end and that did not allow other paths for the artists of my country.

At that time I began a series of articles in a newspaper edited by Fernando Benitez. Later, already in New York, exhibiting in New York City, I also expressed in an interview with Time Magazine, that I did not arrive in New York with a servile attitude of submitting myself to the fashions that were being imposed on me by the New York museums and galleries. I was coming to New York to exhibit my work, to try to bring a different language to a medium that at that time was dominated by abstract expressionism.

En tercer lugar, es bastante obvio, y no creo que esto se limite a los artistas latinoamericanos, que la agitación social nos ha obligado a todos a una posición de incomodidad. Creo que es muy importante que se reconozca este malestar y se identifiquen sus componentes. En las artes visuales, sin duda tenemos que reconocer que hay tensiones en todas partes.

Yo vengo de una gran ciudad, y todos parecemos estar de acuerdo en que los movimientos artísticos como tales, parecen tener un origen cosmopolita, y que las grandes ciudades, los grandes centros parecen auspiciar la definición, que estos problemas socialmente turbulentos afectan al artista plástico como afecta al artista literario, y hay que enfrentarse a ellos, como creo que Marta Traba ha intentado desprenderse de los viejos manierismos y tomar una posición a la que se pueda responder.

Por último, quiero decir que hay más paralelismos de los que creo que se han trazado con otras experiencias, que si eres un artista que trabaja en Nueva York, estás sujeto exactamente al mismo tipo de problemas que en Latinoamérica, fundamentalmente, porque el mundo ciertamente está intercambiando sus peores rasgos, por desgracia, y esas cosas hay que identificarlas aparte de los problemas individuales de identidad.

Todos ustedes saben que el artista norteamericano sigue sufriendo a causa de su psique colonial, y responde de diversas maneras, ya sea convirtiéndose en lo que alguien llamó un artista de la jet-set, moviéndose mucho, o practicando el tipo de resistencia psicológica que recomienda Marta Traba. Hay mucha gente en Nueva York haciendo eso mismo.

Creo que debemos mirar a Europa para encontrar un paralelo también, y reconocer la fuerza de la historia accidental, o la aparición de, voy a utilizar la teoría del gran hombre, que en Europa, usted está hablando aquí sobre el arte latinoamericano, y lo que parece ser el cemento, es el hecho de que las lenguas latinas, portugués y español, se utilizan en este continente llamado América Latina.

Sin embargo, en Europa, tenemos muchas lenguas diferentes en muchos países diferentes, compartiendo ciertas tradiciones latinas, tradiciones griegas antiguas, Aristóteles, etc. De todos modos, en Holanda, hasta el día de hoy, existe un movimiento muy fuerte, que los historiadores del arte suelen pensar que existe porque hubo un Mondrian.

También hay lo contrario, y eso ocurre con frecuencia en las ciudades. En los países europeos muy pequeños hay artistas que se identifican con su país hasta cierto punto, pero no totalmente. Creo que Fernando ha hecho un servicio al señalar que todos los artistas que han testificado aquí, lo primero que han hecho es defender su libertad artística. Creo que cualquier artista que yo haya conocido haría lo mismo, son sobre todo los teóricos y los críticos los que se involucran en esas otras cuestiones.

Ahora, me gustaría preguntar a los panelistas si desean hablar ahora, los panelistas de ambos paneles, y después de eso, pasaremos a las preguntas de las demás personas aquí reunidas. ¿Carlos Rodríguez?

Yo quería, como, seguramente, intervención final mía, referirme a dos puntos. Uno, quizá un poco particular, creo que el otro mucho más general. El primero deriva de las declaraciones hechas ayer por el maestro Rufino Tamayo. La importancia de la obra del maestro Tamayo para mí es tan extraordinaria que ha sido el único pintor que yo he citado como el creador de las bases de la autentificación de la pintura latinoamericana, que yo he citado en mi primera intervención. Creo que las declaraciones de un hombre como él son sumamente importantes.

Ayer he aprendido que el continente americano está dividido, no solamente como yo creía, en una parte anglosajona y otra parte latinoamericana, sino que Latinoamérica está dividida en dos partes. México, por un lado, y el resto de los demás países, por otro. Ha dicho también el maestro Tamayo que en mi país la población está dividida en indios y criollos, y eso es exacto. Lo que ocurre es que los criollos somos en el Perú, mestizos, cholos y zambos, y que ignoramos la definición de criollo que da el diccionario de la Real Academia de la Lengua Española.

También es cierto que hay una escultura del conquistador español Francisco Pizarro. Incidentalmente esa escultura fue regalada por su autora, una escultura americana, a un alcalde complaciente, durante la dictadura del mariscal Benavides. Los peruanos que se ocupan poco de cosas de arte no la toman en cuenta ni nunca van a verla. Solamente van a verla los turistas.

El segundo punto se refiere más a lo tratado en el simposium de arte. Yo creo que, a diferencia, por ejemplo, de lo que ha ocurrido en el simposium de literatura, donde es evidente lo que ha dicho el profesor Rodríguez Monegal, de que la crítica literaria es un género de la literatura. En el simposium de arte es evidente que la crítica de arte no es un género de la pintura o de la escultura. Esto supone una situación muy especial sobre la cual yo quiero llamar la atención, a manera de conclusión, a mis colegas críticos.

Por una parte, y me parece muy bien, los pintores, los artistas, han manifestado que solo les interesa la crítica que nace de ellos mismos, la autocrítica. Me parece muy bien. Esto nos debe llevar a reflexionar sobre los límites y las posibilidades de nuestro oficio. En lugar de salir de este simposium con conclusiones, que siempre son peligrosas, propongo que salgamos con inquietudes y preocupaciones sobre nuestro oficio, que podrían quizá polarizarse en una alternativa.

Es posible, todo es posible, que exista una escalada terrorista de las vanguardias, pero es posible también, lo sospecho evidentemente, que exista una escalada terrorista de la crítica. Gracias.

Quiero referirme a una de las observaciones que ha hecho la señora Duncan, a mi modo de ver, muy interesante. Su referencia a la pobre situación económica de los países latinoamericanos y a la manera en que esto afecta, de un modo u otro, la creación artística. Quizá está en relación con el problema específicamente económico, pero no es exactamente el mismo, otro, que es el que se refiere a la educación.

Quizás, en una medida mayor, afecta, y generalmente para mal, el desarrollo más coherente o más libre, en algún caso, o más fácil de la creación artística, la carencia de educación en un público receptor.

Al hablar de educación, no me refiero tanto, en este momento, aunque desde luego no deja de ser de la mayor importancia, a la educación escolar en niveles primarios, y a la posibilidad de una apreciación de la obra por parte de estratos muy amplios de la población, sino algo que es primario, que necesariamente antecede a aquella situación de una aceptación más general, como es la mala educación de las clases altas y pudientes y la carencia de educación de las personas con poder, de las personas en puestos de Gobierno.

Ciertamente, la riqueza acumulada en una ciudad como México o aun como Caracas, es muy inferior a la acumulada en ciudades de los Estados Unidos, pero no es solo eso, sino que la gente que tiene dinero no compra. La gente que tiene dinero no hace donaciones, la gente que tiene dinero no ayuda a museos. No solo es el problema desde luego, sino que las gentes en los puestos de mando y de Gobierno tampoco se interesan, sino muy limitadamente por estos aspectos.

Yo creo que Fernando Gamboa, lo que tiene de fantasma porque viaja tanto, y de mago por otro lado, le viene de poder estirar un ridículo presupuesto para hacer una alquimia peculiar y poder con unos cuantos centavos hacer algo que valga la pena en el Museo de Arte Moderno de la Ciudad de México. No es el problema que el país sea tan pobre, que sí lo es, sino que siendo así de pobre, destina a este tipo de actividades un porcentaje de su presupuesto, verdaderamente ridículo.

Quisiera también, ¿sí tengo un medio minuto o espero?

Un minuto.

Quisiera hacer una referencia a la crítica, algo que se me quedó un poco en el papel ayer. Lo que ha dicho la señora Duncan también me ha incitado un poco, y en fin, lo que ha dicho Carlos Rodríguez Saavedra. Insistir en que es para mí también, por cierto a lo dicho ayer por Dore Ashton, el crítico, y por muchos pintores. El crítico no es tanto ese puente entre el arte y el público. Es ya un paso. Es peor decir que el crítico es el juez o que el crítico es el que dicta las normas a seguir.

La actitud de puente es también una actitud que a mí me resulta muy sospechosa, y en la que no creo en realidad. El crítico es el punto extremo, el crítico en el fondo no es sino un receptor más. Quizás un receptor de excelencia por lo que se supone que debe de ser su preparación, pero es un receptor y su actitud es fundamental. No para el artista como creador. Sí creo que para la obra como tal, porque la obra así lo entiendo yo, no se cumple, sino en tanto que es percibida por alguien.

Bien el crítico es solo uno de los perceptores que expresa su percepción, que reflexiona sobre la obra. Gracias.

Quiero pedirle un favor especial a la persona que esté a cargo de esta reunión. No sé si está el señor Gudolf en este momento en el recinto, o alguien que esté en lugar de él. ¿Tú puedes ser, Doll? No sé quién. ¿Quién es el encargado de esta sesión?

Profesor Gudolf, quiero pedirle a usted un favor.

El favor es este. En atención al milagro que pudo hacer usted, consiguiendo que las autoridades de su país me dejaran entrar en Estados Unidos exactamente 14 días, desde el 26 de octubre hasta el 10 de noviembre. En atención a que me vine desde Caracas y que he podido tener cuatro intervenciones, una de tres minutos y tres de dos minutos, lo que quiero pedirle para dar como punto final a mis intervenciones, es si usted me concede así excepcionalmente, cinco minutos, si no, prefiero no intervenir.

Dos minutos. [risas] ¿Dónde está este autoridad central?

Cinco minutos.

Gracias. Perdón, Dore, yo no sabía a quién pedirlo. No sabía si era a ti o si era al profesor Gudolf.

En estas reuniones, por educación se acostumbra llegar en la sesión final, a la conciliación de los contrarios. Yo pido en cambio, que se llegue a una clarificación en la definición de esos contrarios. Cuando Aracy Amaral, en su inteligente y lúcida intervención, nos califica de continente ocupado.

Cuando José Luis Cuevas, en una cerrada lucha que ya lleva casi 20 años, a través de su admirable obra y de su comportamiento humano, salva un espacio artístico para que no se confunda con las actividades extraterritoriales de la política de bandería o de partido, ni con las frivolidades de la pseudovanguardias. Cuando Gómez Sicre, a quien inexplicablemente no se lo invitó a presidir el panel de arte como era su derecho por haber sido el pionero en la concepción de un arte latinoamericano distinto, se atreve a señalar la originalidad de la generación Morales Botero, frente a los modelos americanos o europeos.

Cuando otros compañeros de esta reunión, pese a su franca minoría, plantean una pugna frontal con el tono dominante que creo haber reconocido en el coloquio, con su pánico por pronunciar la palabra "regional", la vía socialista o con su continua rendición de cuentas a la cultura occidental, creo que no hay que ser ni dócil, ni condescendiente, sino enfrentar ese tono con argumentos convincentes.

Pienso que lo que se ha aclarado en la reunión, es que los artistas y los críticos se mueven con relativa libertad entre dos opciones, reconocer que la dependencia sí existe, y subsiguientemente rechazarla como una presión de la cultura, los medios masivos de comunicación y una tecnología evidentemente ideológica por parte de los centros emisores, Europa o Estados Unidos. O desconocerla, la dependencia, y por tanto, aceptarla e integrarse con ella, camuflándola con la teoría varias veces enunciada en esta reunión de que somos un continente subdesarrollado económicamente, pero desarrollado culturalmente.

Lo que equivale a decir que tenemos pueblos idiotizados por el hambre y la ignorancia, e intelectuales esclarecidos por la comida francesa y el pragmatismo norteamericano. O aceptar la derrota del arte, en tanto que sistema o lenguaje capaz de transmitir significados que enriquezcan los códigos cada vez más empobrecidos que se lean al público, o luchar contra ese pesimismo, afirmando la capacidad del arte para transmitir significados.

Afirmando su valor espiritual y su dimensión poética por más viejas que parezcan estas palabras, operando una resacralización del arte en una sociedad enferma, por lo que llama Adorno, "La pasión de lo palpable". Tal responsabilidad del artista y del crítico no puede medirse sino por su obra, por la coherencia de su estructura interna y la voluntad de esa estructura de ser a la vez historia y contenido social sedimentado.

Cito de nuevo a Adorno, "En cambio de ser decoración o entretenimiento de pequeños grupos", no me importa que Monegal vuelva a acusarme de tener una sola idea. La mejor literatura y el arte más espléndido, han sido hechos por maniáticos, por escritores de un solo tema, como Onetti, de un solo libro. Como por ejemplo, ese inmenso Juan Rulfo, que ni siquiera ha recibido una mención en este Encuentro de Literatura Latinoamericana.

O artistas de una sola imagen, como puede ser el mexicano Ricardo Martínez. Insistiendo por última vez en esa sola idea, diré que la revaluación de la región como contexto natural del espacio plástico, el estudio sistemático de la estructura de la obra para desmontarla y hacerla comprender lo más cabalmente posible al público, la incidencia definitiva que arte y crítica puedan tener respecto a nuestras sociedades confusas, ambiguas, como se ha dicho acá, y urgidas de todo aporte esclarecedor, son formas específicas de un combate general que converge, en mi opinión, en el mismo punto, el cambio de una realidad que día a día nos cubre de oprobio. Gracias.

Señor Bayón.

Yo quería agregar algo que me parece que no ha sido dicho. Alguien ayer, como de pasada, creo que fue un artista, mencionó que la crítica también tiene una función creadora, y yo aplaudí, pero nadie me oyó, porque yo estoy absolutamente convencido que nosotros los críticos tenemos una función creadora, tan creadora como la de los artistas, nuestros amigos, que no lo entienda nadie mal.

Esa función creadora nuestra, paralela a la de los artistas y tan respetable como la de ellos, a pesar de que se base en la obra de ellos, esa lección la recibí hace muchos años leyendo El arco y la lira, de Octavio Paz. Cuando me hizo comprender, en un capítulo avanzado del libro, algo en que yo por modestia quizá nunca había pensado, y era que en el arte contemporáneo no hay arte contemporáneo avanzado o de vanguardia que no marche paralelo a una crítica, que ni le dicta ni la explicita totalmente, pero que es paralela de ella.

Dice Octavio Paz, desde Apollinaire, o Apollinaire comentando a los cubistas, el artista y crítico, marchamos unidos, a veces de mala manera, porque no nos permiten ir tomados de la mano, pero no para guiarlos.

Yo cuando escribo, no escribo nunca para los artistas, escribo para la gente, porque me parece que soy un intermediario y por eso escribo sencillo, pero al mismo tiempo tengo la secreta esperanza de que el artista me lea o nos lea.

Como el artista funciona en todos los niveles por intuición, el artista también tiene que saber, cuando en la crítica que lee en el diario o en la revista, hay elementos que le pueden ser útiles, como cuando uno se mira en el espejo para saber si tiene la corbata derecha, o hay elementos que no le sirven al artista para nada. En ese momento nos deja, nos mete en un cajón, y tiene toda la razón de hacerlo.

Lleguemos casi a terminar estas reuniones, recordando que, efectivamente, buenos o malos, los críticos de arte tenemos una función creadora, y que podemos vivir y justificarnos por nosotros mismos, nada más.

Yo creo que hay diferencia entre los artistas que viven en Nueva York o en Tucumán o Maracaibo. Por un comentario que hizo el señor Manrique ayer, tengo esta pregunta, en el caso de un artista joven latinoamericano, quien por equis circunstancias está produciendo su obra fuera de Latinoamérica, digamos Estados Unidos, ¿cuán válida es esa expresión que nace dentro de un ambiente que ofrece conflictos diferentes a los que existen en su país?

¿Es posible que este artista evite la degeneración de su mensaje con relación a su país de origen, al estar físicamente alejado de él? En otras palabras, ¿puede esta obra ser considerada en su totalidad latinoamericana esencialmente?

¿José Luis Cuevas? ¿Hay alguien? ¿Quieres responder a esa pregunta?

Muy brevemente, porque varios de estos jóvenes artistas pasan por mi oficina de Nueva York y hablo con ellos, creo que la respuesta es sí. Porque, como he dicho, creo que vienen con su formación interior de su propio país. Han venido, en realidad, en busca del tipo de investigación cosmopolita sobre el arte del mundo moderno. Siento, a partir de este momento, que no han perdido el sentido de la identidad, si he entendido bien tu pregunta. Ahora bien, todos nos enfrentamos a eso de lo que Marta habla repetidamente, el peligro de una cultura global.

Estoy muy de acuerdo con ella, en que el mundo perderá muchos elementos de personalidad si esto ocurre. Creo que, en este momento, no está ocurriendo.

Quisiera pedir que los demás panelistas que deseen intervenir lo hagan al principio de la sesión de esta tarde y que permitamos ahora las preguntas de los estudiantes. ¿Les parece bien? Así es como lo hemos planeado. Señor Manrique.

¿Hay más preguntas de estudiantes y visitantes esta mañana? Si no es así, podemos empezar pidiendo a José Luis Cuevas que haga ahora su declaración.

Debo de reconocer que en mi permanencia aquí en este simposium he sido demasiado parco en mis intervenciones, llevado más que nada por mi estado de salud y por recomendaciones de tipo médico. No se me están permitidos ciertos desahogos emotivos, y estos desahogos, desde luego, prefiero reservarlos para mi obra pictórica. Sin embargo, no puedo dejar de irritarme con Marta Traba frente a este intencionado happy end que está tratando de trazarse, en la que todos nos vamos a ir muy contentos.

He visto yo la avidez de algunos de mis colegas, sobre todo mexicanos, de establecer relaciones provechosas.

Debo de decir que siempre me he distinguido, además de haberme distinguido en otros campos, por ser un anticonformista. Se ha tratado de crear una especie de imagen de que tanto Marta como yo, o también la estupenda intervención de la señorita Amaral, ha sido más que nada marcada por una actitud un poco retrógrada frente a actitudes vanguardistas y muy avanzadas de la representación mexicana.

Debo por eso decir, para los que no estén informados, que en mi país he representado siempre una actitud anticonformista, una actitud luchadora, en los 50, frente a una pintura mexicana que se encontraba en un callejón sin salida y que no permitía otros caminos para los artistas de mi país.

En esa época inicié una serie de artículos en un periódico que dirigía Fernando Benítez. Después, ya en Nueva York, exponiendo en la ciudad de Nueva York, también expresé en una entrevista que me hizo la revista Time Magazine, que no llegaba yo a Nueva York con una actitud servil de someterme a las modas que me estaban imponiendo los museos y las galerías neoyorquinas. Llegaba yo a Nueva York para exponer mi trabajo, para tratar de aportar un lenguaje diferente en un medio que en ese momento estaba dominado por el expresionismo abstracto.

That by no means meant that I did not admire abstract expressionist painting. I have always declared myself an admirer of the great figures of North American art like Jackson Pollock, de Kooning, Franz Kline, Motherwell, Adja Yunkers, and many others. I have also demonstrated—and written and said in countless lectures—that I fully understand American Pop Art and I recognize very important figures such as Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, and Oldenburg. That does not mean that just because I admire them, I should follow what they propose merely because they operate from a metropolis that exports its art through magazines and publications with international reach.

In my first and very brief intervention, I referred to American magazines. I was not speaking out of spite or anything like that, because I must recognize that I have received quite intelligent reception from the American critics. In one of the recent issues of ARTNews there is a very favorable article about me, and in the upcoming issue of Arts, two pages are dedicated to me. However, what I was saying is that we need to exhibit, of course, in these important places, but without provincial inferiority complexes. We are not trying to conquer a market through servile attitudes—that is precisely the kind of attitude I find repugnant in some of my colleagues, especially fellow Mexicans who are present here. Against that servile attitude, I still take a firm stand.

Now, once again disregarding the doctors’ advice from Methodist Hospital in Houston, I express again my opposition to those attitudes, and I deeply regret having drained some emotional energy from the work I must begin the day after tomorrow, once I’m back in my studio in San Ángel, Mexico City.

On another note, I just want to say that I am truly moved by Marta Traba’s extraordinary intervention, and I also deeply regret that José Gómez Sicre was not one of the speakers, as Mr. Fernando Gamboa pointed out. That is all.

This afternoon is devoted entirely to the final statements from various people, including people who hasn't had a chance to speak before. This morning I asked everyone who wishes to speak to give me their name, so that I have a very long list of names. Therefore, we are going to be very strict and we are going to give everyone five minutes absolute maximum, and when you spoke in four minutes professor Ellison will hold this yellow pencil and you know that you have one more minute to go. Otherwise, I shall intervene.

I will call speakers in the order they signed up to be fair and democratic. If there is time left over, we’ll have questions from the floor. I also have one question that was handed to me, which I will read after the listed speakers have finished their four and a half minutes. So, I will now call Mr. Tamayo to speak first.

After being mentioned three times this morning, I think it's fair to say a few words. I will address particularly the two mentions made of what I said yesterday. The third one I will completely ignore, as I always have, because in addition to being a veiled reference, the person who said it only deserves my silence.

I fear I stirred up a storm in a teacup with what I said yesterday about the differences that exist in Latin America, especially as we are so concerned with defining a Latin American identity. I spoke about ethnic differences, and it may have been taken as an insult. I want those who understood it that way not to take offense, because my intent was not to offend, but simply to show that there are a series of things that make it very difficult for us to reach a definitive identification of Latin America.

It was even said that I believe Latin America is divided between Mexico and the other countries. That is absurd. Especially when we are talking about art issues, and I have stated as a principle that I consider art to be universal.

One of the people who tried to show I was wrong, referring to the statue of Pizarro in Lima, said that it was left standing only for the tourists. That, rather than contradicting me, I think actually supports my point. Because if in Peru they left the statue for the tourists, in Mexico, I must say, we discovered the tomb of Cortés long ago—and we didn’t even leave it for tourists. We completely sealed it off. That means we have a different mindset, whether we like it or not.

In Mexico, the Indigenous root is considered something fundamental to our culture and our lives. That’s all. I am not saying that being criollo is a defect—it is a reality, nothing more. Therefore, I repeat: if we are concerned with finding an identity that can define us as Latin Americans in general, we need to dig into these evident problems. That is all. I have never claimed that Latin America is divided between Mexico and the rest. I have never claimed that Mexico is better than the other countries. I only want to insist that there are fundamental differences that must be considered when attempting to define Latin American identity. Nothing more.

Mrs. Rita Vega.

Over these two and a half days that we’ve spent discussing together, we’ve repeatedly heard the words “resistance,” “dissent,” “dependency,” “colonialism,” etc., often in a general and abstract sense. I believe that today, Mrs. Barbara Duncan provided ample opportunity to provoke a reaction from members of the resistance. I believe that, undoubtedly, Mrs. Duncan, with good faith and politeness, gave us a testimony that the problems of the 1930s are still alive, expressing once again the paternalistic attitude toward Latin America. In the spirit of dialogue, I want to ask a question: What do other North Americans think about this?

I hope the other North Americans will be able to respond to that later. Helen Escobedo.

I will summarize what has been discussed over these days. For me, three points stand out to follow. First, the artist: the madman or the sane person who speaks alone, the individual who organizes their own reality, who finds their own conceptualization—Juan Acha. The artist may be influenced by local or imported models, whether at home or abroad. The artist is the thermometer of the circumstances of their time and place. They are like a glass of water—whether a cubist glass with absinthe or an acrylic one filled with blood.

The artist creates art—it flows out of them—and from there it is manipulated. This is where the real problem begins and where I feel we should have started: with the positioning of the art object, not the artist subject.

Second point: the critic. I’m speaking of the historian-critic, the creative critic, of whom Dore Ashton and Frederico Morais spoke—those who leave lucid, and why not, poetic testimonies. Here my idealist side emerges: going beyond the intermediary critic, the explainer of what the public should grasp on their own. That is, direct reading, without interpretations—being a direct witness of the artwork. I’m almost done.

Yes, it sounds utopian, I know—but I would love to see the day when the general public, the vital public we talk so much about, can see without intermediaries. Feel without apologizing for not understanding. Maybe then the artist can become a happy human being, needed by the society in which they live. So, let’s get to work—all of us who are so aware of these well-known problems. Let’s inform, open doors, meet in universities. Thank you [unintelligible]. Let’s have serious exchanges in both directions, exhibitions that go and come. Let us Latin Americans join together. I’ll end with a slogan from Mexican telephones: “People understand each other by talking,” or as the students say, “United, we will win.” [laughs] [applause]

Mr. Morais.

Well, I will speak in Portuguese. This morning, Rodrigo Saavedra also spoke about a kind of terrorism of criticism, referring to Marta Traba. [laughter] I would like to emphasize that starting in the 1960s, what a Brazilian critic referred to as postmodern art begins to occur — the idea that the modern art period had already been surpassed and that we are now living in a postmodern art situation. The defining characteristic of this moment would be a continuous shift in positions. In that sense, not only can a critic also be an artist, but an artist can also be a critic.

In a certain sense, this is the nature, for example, of conceptual art, in that conceptual art today takes as its theme a reflection on art itself — thus, it has a topological character. This clearly leads to the point that was made yesterday, that critics and artists can therefore propose their own models.

I found yesterday’s discussion about operational models somewhat imprecise, vague. What I understand by a model is the creation of a theoretical framework with which one can operate upon a reality — our reality. When I said yesterday that I understand art as a construction of our reality, I meant that the artist, in transforming reality, creates new realities — in doing so, he is proposing a model.

In our case, I could explain this model based on, as I mentioned yesterday, our very well-defined constructive art from the 1950s. I could also here make a reference to Octavio Paz — he’s been mentioned, particularly when he speaks about the absence of critical thought in Latin America. And I believe that, at least in Brazil, there was a sustained and successful effort to theorize a form of critical thinking — this was the Brazilian Concrete movement.

It’s clear that the possible origins of this critical thought can be located in Europe, but the very fact that it persisted and underwent a process of nationalization, and [unintelligible 00:17:36] even took on a more organic character — for instance, with tropicalismo — shows that it had real effectiveness.

By model, I could also include the entire approach of Marta Traba. I believe that the very idea of resistance can itself constitute a model.

I’ll just make a quick reference to Monegal’s presentation this morning. He made a distinction that I didn’t quite understand between autonomy and specificity. Yesterday, I spoke about specificity. For example, all the discussions about nationalism in Brazil during the 1950s were in pursuit of a specifically Brazilian identity, which corresponded to the search for specificity in our constructive art.

Now, he says that he thinks the discussion should center around — or that there should be — a search for specificity, but that art is not autonomous. If it is specific, then it is autonomous.

Dr. Guda.

I would express a viewpoint that hasn't been brought in really. I'm an art historian. Our history has studied the primary form of art criticism which is by artist in their work. Creative art is a critical dialog with it sources and with the intended descendants, that is one might say that Otero, is a primary critic of Mondrian. Art criticism in words is always secondary, which is not to say is irrelevant. Researches at the University of Rochester has discovered that the brain has what they call infinite capacity to start visual images. The start is in the unconscious mind. One of the retrieval mechanisms is words, which brings images to the conscious minds. Señor Gamboa speaks of Fernando Szyszlo's lyrical abstractions he gives us a mechanism for image retrieval. A culture is based on words, as the Arabs had 3000 words for camel equipment and as we have thousands for automobiles, what has no name disappears from culture. Written criticism may concern itself with social problems or anything else, but inasmuch as it is art criticism, its role is to be the sense of touch. That is to say, descriptive for the consciousness. Art history is useful because it liberates us from the tyranny of the momentary.

We all forget that it was Siqueiros in his manifesto of 1921 who defined the program of 20th century art, a program whose goals still lie before us and that it was Siqueiros and his experimental workshop in New York who invented the means by which Jackson Pollock made his contribution. We forget the seminal contribution of Matta to the Art of Gorky. We forget that the first experiment in national support of the arts in the United States was inspired directly by Mexico.

We forget the important role of the ten Latin American delegates, including Orozco, Siqueiros and Tamayo, to the first American Artists Congress in New York in 1936 when Orozco and Julia Codesido were on the platform. The United States has been the recipient, not the source of cultural imperialism. The New York School has been the synthesis of many influences, but especially it is the only direct heir of the Mexican renaissance. If we fail to recognize our fathers, it does not mean that you must fail to recognize your children. [aplausos]

Aracy Amaral.

This is my intervention, which will be the last. In this final comment, I’d like to point out: here in this meeting, as expected, we have been working around ideas, but not artworks. When artworks are mentioned, it’s usually only those by well-established, internationally recognized artists. We have hardly addressed the problem of artists from an intermediary generation or younger artists who are struggling to introduce new forms of expression.

That seems to me to be a major omission in this meeting. On the other hand, I’d also like to add something about the problem of the artist who leaves Latin America and goes abroad — to New York or to Paris. Manrique answered a student who asked a question about this. I would add that in the very choice the artist makes, we also see the Latin American character. Because the artist tends to gather in groups — and in that kind of ghettoized separation that occurs abroad, there’s also a preservation of native traditions. Now, before I finish, I would like to respond to an observation made by Ms. Duncan, which I feel I cannot let pass without a reply. She mentioned the interesting contribution that economics can make to the cultural field.

I would respond to her, on the contrary, with a quote from Eduardo Galeano, a Uruguayan writer, who said that the culture of dominant economic centers is often given the status of “universal culture.” Galeano also said that the day the economy becomes internationalized, culture becomes internationalized as well. In other words, seeing oneself through the eyes of the country that dominates economically and culturally — that is what happens in such cases. That is why it is truly difficult for an artist subject to economic dependency to make his true voice visible.

Mr. Góngora.

I would like to add to what Aracy Amaral has said, which she expressed so well. As a comment on what Ms. Duncan said this morning about the predominance of the media or businesses in supporting art: such support might create an even greater dependency of the artist on those institutions, on those businesses. I believe that if the businessperson is an ethical individual, perhaps their support for certain movements could be valid.

But most of the time, these supports are tied to interests that are not so clear or ethical. They produce imbalance and sponsorship of tendencies that already serve certain interests. This is a fact we already know — what businesses have done to art. If we are worried about the danger of official art, I think we should be even more concerned about corporate art. We know very well about corporate art, bank art, airport art — and it’s very possible that this kind of art, made to be seen in airports or banks, is completely decorative. It is art that, in many ways, has ceased to have rebellious vitality.

In my case, as an “eretomaniac” painter [one obsessed with erotic themes], what businessman would want to display one of my drawings or paintings in a bank? I believe in that case, the expression of an artist who speaks in these terms would be completely suppressed. We also know the case of how, after Mondrian’s paintings became popular on a box of Kleenex, the Kleenex company removed it from the market because they thought it might offend their customers.

The same goes for Warhol’s Brillo boxes or even the Campbell’s soup cans — I believe the industry even changed the label because they didn’t want to cause controversy. Now, going back again to the notion of the erotic painter: in what way would respectable businessmen display my drawings in their home for the whole family to see? In what way could they sponsor something that, after all, by being erotic, might lead to—

They could put it in the mistress's apartment.

Might lead— [laughter] Perhaps might lead to what’s called sexual exploitation, as we know well from the case of [unintelligible]. We also know how many millions of dollars have been made from it.

At the risk of sounding off-key, I return to generalities. I have the impression that beneath the monologues we’ve heard throughout this symposium, there is a struggle between artist and critic — both fearful. One is afraid of losing importance. The other is afraid to raise his head and claim the right to an activity that complements artistic creation, because he still feels like a second-class citizen — a parasite, a failed writer or painter. In truth, I believe we are witnessing one more stage in the development of Latin American culture — namely, the emergence of the thinking man who takes on the task of clarifying the work of art through reason and through consequent ideas and concepts.

Eso no quería decir de ninguna manera que yo no admirara la pintura expresionista abstracta, siempre me he declarado admirador de las grandes figuras del arte norteamericano como Jackson Pollock, o de Kooning, o Franz Kline, o Motherwell, o el mismo Adja Yunkers, y muchos otros. También he demostrado y he escrito y lo he dicho en infinidad de conferencias, que entiendo perfectamente el pop norteamericano y reconozco a figuras tan importantes como Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns o Oldenburg. Eso no quiere decir que por el hecho de que yo sea un admirador de ellos, deba yo de ser un seguidor de lo que ellos me están proponiendo por el solo hecho de ellos funcionar dentro de una metrópoli que estará exportando su arte a través de revistas, de publicaciones que tienen una proyección internacional.

En mi primera y brevísima intervención, me referí a las revistas norteamericanas, no estaba hablando la voz del despecho ni mucho menos, porque debo reconocer que he tenido una recepción bastante inteligente por parte de la crítica norteamericana. En uno de los últimos números de ARTNews hay un artículo muy favorable a mí, y en el próximo Arts se me dedican dos páginas. Sin embargo, yo hablaba, yo decía, que es necesario que nosotros expongamos, por supuesto en estos lugares importantes, pero sin complejos provincianos, y que no estamos tratando de conquistar un mercado por medio de una actitud servil, que esa es la actitud que precisamente me ha repugnado de algunos de mis colegas, sobre todo nacionales mexicanos que se encuentran aquí presentes. Contra esa actitud servil sí me sigo pronunciando.

Ahora desoyendo definitivamente los consejos médicos vertidos en el Methodist Hospital de Houston, me pronuncio otra vez contra esas actitudes y lamento profundamente haber restado emotividad a los trabajos que tengo que emprender pasado mañana, cuando ya me encuentre ubicado otra vez en mi estudio de San Ángel, en México, Distrito Federal.

Por otra parte, nada más quiero decir que estoy verdaderamente emocionado por la intervención extraordinaria Marta Traba, que también lamento profundamente que no haya sido ponente el precursor, como lo señaló ya don Fernando Gamboa, José Gómez Sicre. Es todo.

Después de haber sido mencionado tres veces en la sesión de la mañana, considero justo decir algunas palabras. Me voy a referir particularmente a las dos menciones que se hicieron sobre lo que yo dije ayer. A la tercera no le voy a hacer ningún caso, como siempre lo he hecho, porque además de que fue velada la mención, quien lo dijo merece solamente mi silencio.

Yo me temo que he levantado una tempestad en un vaso de agua por lo que dije ayer respecto a las diferencias que hay en Latinoamérica, cuando estamos tan preocupados de definir una identidad de Latinoamérica. Yo hablé de las diferencias étnicas y se tomó tal vez como un insulto, y yo quiero que las personas que lo entendieron así, no lo tomen así, porque mi idea no fue ofender sino simplemente demostrar que hay una serie de cosas que nos hacen muy difícil dar una definitiva identificación a Latinoamérica.

Se habló incluso de que yo considero que la América Latina está dividida entre México y los otros países. Es absurdo pensar en eso. Máxime cuando estamos hablando de problemas de arte, y que yo he declarado que, como principio, considero que el arte es universal.

Una de las personas que trató de demostrar que estaba yo equivocado, y refiriéndose a la estatua de Pizarro, en Lima, dijo que la estatua de Pizarro la habían dejado solamente para los turistas. Eso en vez de contradecir mi dicho, yo creo que lo afirma más, porque si en Perú, dejaron la estatua para los turistas, en México, debo decir que desde hace mucho tiempo descubrimos la tumba de Cortés, y no la dejamos ni para los turistas, sino que la cerramos totalmente. Eso significa que tenemos un sentido, quiérase que no, muy distinto.

En México, la raíz india nos parece una cosa fundamental en nuestra cultura y en nuestra vida. Eso es todo. Yo no estoy diciendo que el hecho de ser criollo sea un defecto, es una realidad y nada más. En consecuencia, vuelvo a repetir, si nuestra preocupación es encontrar la identidad que pueda determinarnos como latinoamericanos en general, necesitamos hurgar en todos estos problemas que son evidentes. Eso es todo. Jamás he pretendido yo que la América Latina esté dividida entre México y el resto de Latinoamérica. Jamás he pretendido yo que México sea mejor que los otros países. Yo solamente quiero insistir en que hay diferencias fundamentales que se tienen que tomar en cuenta cuando se trate de encontrar la identidad de Latinoamérica y nada más.

Durante estos dos días y medio que llevamos juntos discutiendo, se ha oído repetidas veces la palabra resistencia, disidencia, dependencia, coloniaje, etcétera, en términos quizás de una idea general y abstracta. Creo que hoy, la señora Barbara Duncan dio amplia oportunidad para provocar una reacción de los miembros de la resistencia. Creo que, desde luego, la señora Duncan, con toda buena fe y educación, nos dio un testimonio de que los problemas de los años 30 siguen vigentes, expresando así a Latinoamérica la eterna actitud del paternalismo. En la mejor tradición del diálogo, quiero hacer una pregunta, ¿Qué piensan otros norteamericanos de esto?

Yo voy a reducir lo que se ha venido tratando estos días. Que para mí, sobresalen tres puntos a seguir. El artista es el loco o cuerdo que habla solo, es el individuo que organiza su propia realidad, encontrará su auto conceptualización, Juan Acha. Se dejará influenciar por modelos locales o importados, en su país o en el extranjero, es el termómetro de las circunstancias de su tiempo y su espacio. Simplemente es como un vaso de agua, que puede ser un vaso cubista con Absinthe, o de acrílico lleno de sangre.

El artista hace arte, sale de él, y ahí sale para ser manipulado. Aquí es donde empieza el problema real y donde siento que deberíamos haber arrancado desde el principio, con la ubicación del objeto-arte y no del sujeto-artista.

Ahora, el punto dos, el crítico. Yo hablo del crítico historiador, el crítico creativo, del cual nos hablaron Dore Ashton y Frederico Morais, los que dejan testimonios lúcidos, ¿y por qué no? Poéticos. Aquí me sale lo idealista, que es ir más allá del crítico intermediario, el explicador de lo que el público debería captar por sí solo. O sea, la lectura directa, sin interpretaciones, sino como testigo presencial de la obra que lo confronta. Ya mero acabo.

Suena a utopía, lo sé, pero yo quisiera ver el día en el que el gran público, ese público vital del cual tanto hablamos, sepa ver sin intermediarios. El señor Morais.

Bueno, yo hablo en portugués. Hoy en la mañana Rodrigo Saavedra habló también de un terrorismo de la crítica a propósito de Marta Traba. [risas] Quisiera señalar que a partir de los años 60 ocurre lo que un crítico brasileño denomina arte posmoderno, es decir, que el periodo del arte moderno ya habría sido superado y que estaríamos viviendo entonces una situación de arte posmoderno. La característica de este momento sería precisamente un cambio continuo de posiciones. En ese sentido, no solo un crítico puede ser también un artista, sino que el artista también puede ser un crítico.

En cierto sentido, ese es el carácter, por ejemplo, del arte conceptual, en el sentido de que el arte conceptual hoy toma como tema de su reflexión el propio arte, por lo tanto tiene un carácter topológico. Esto evidentemente lleva a la afirmación que se hizo ayer, de que tanto críticos como artistas pueden proponer sus propios modelos.

Creo que la discusión de ayer acerca de los modelos operacionales me pareció un poco imprecisa, vaga. Yo entiendo por modelo la creación de un modelo teórico con el cual se pueda operar sobre una realidad, nuestra realidad. Cuando ayer dije que entiendo el arte como una construcción de nuestra realidad, quise decir que lo mejor que un artista puede hacer es modificar la realidad, crear nuevas realidades, y así está proponiendo un modelo.

En nuestro caso, yo podría explicar ese modelo a partir de, como decía ayer, nuestro arte constructivo, bien caracterizado en los años 50. Aquí también podría hacerse una referencia al hablar de Octavio Paz. Él menciona la ausencia de un pensamiento crítico en América Latina, y yo creo que, por lo menos en Brasil, hubo un esfuerzo [ininteligible 00:17:08] exitoso de teorización de un pensamiento crítico, y ese fue un movimiento concreto brasileño.

Está claro que los posibles orígenes de ese pensamiento crítico pueden encontrarse en Europa, pero el simple hecho de que haya persistido, de que haya pasado por un proceso de nacionalización y que [ininteligible 00:17:36], incluso, haya adquirido una característica más orgánica —por ejemplo, con el tropicalismo— muestra que realmente tuvo cierta eficacia.

Por modelo también podría entender toda la postura de Marta Traba. Yo creo que toda idea de resistencia también puede constituir un modelo.

Solo quiero hacer una referencia rápida a lo que dijo Monegal esta mañana. Él hizo una distinción que tampoco entendí muy bien entre autonomía y lo específico. Ayer yo hablaba de lo específico. Por ejemplo, toda la discusión sobre el nacionalismo en el Brasil de los años 50 sería una búsqueda de un específico brasileño, lo cual corresponde a la búsqueda de un específico en nuestro arte constructivo.

Ahora, él dice que cree que la discusión debería girar en torno o debería haber una búsqueda de lo específico, pero que el arte no es autónomo. Si es específico, es autónomo.

Quisiera expresar un punto de vista que realmente no se ha planteado. Soy historiador del arte. La historia del arte ha estudiado la forma principal de crítica de arte, que es la realizada por los propios artistas en su obra. El arte creativo es un diálogo crítico con sus fuentes y con sus descendientes previstos, es decir, se podría decir que Otero es un crítico primordial de Mondrian. La crítica de arte en palabras siempre es secundaria, lo cual no quiere decir que sea irrelevante. Investigaciones en la Universidad de Rochester han descubierto que el cerebro tiene lo que llaman una capacidad infinita para iniciar imágenes visuales. El inicio se da en el inconsciente. Uno de los mecanismos de recuperación es el lenguaje, que lleva las imágenes a la mente consciente. El señor Gamboa habla de las abstracciones líricas de Fernando Szyszlo; él nos ofrece un mecanismo para la recuperación de imágenes. Una cultura se basa en las palabras, como los árabes que tenían 3000 palabras para el equipo de los camellos, o como nosotros que tenemos miles para los automóviles. Lo que no tiene nombre desaparece de la cultura. La crítica escrita puede ocuparse de problemas sociales o de cualquier otra cosa, pero en la medida en que sea crítica de arte, su papel es ser el sentido del tacto. Es decir, ser descriptiva para la conciencia. La historia del arte es útil porque nos libera de la tiranía de lo momentáneo.

Todos olvidamos que fue Siqueiros, en su manifiesto de 1921, quien definió el programa del arte del siglo XX, un programa cuyos objetivos aún están por alcanzarse, y que fue Siqueiros, con su taller experimental en Nueva York, quien inventó los medios con los que Jackson Pollock hizo su contribución. Olvidamos la contribución seminal de Matta al arte de Gorky. Olvidamos que el primer experimento de apoyo nacional a las artes en Estados Unidos fue inspirado directamente por México.

Olvidamos el papel importante de los diez delegados latinoamericanos, entre ellos Orozco, Siqueiros y Tamayo, en el Primer Congreso de Artistas Americanos en Nueva York en 1936, cuando Orozco y Julia Codesido estaban en la tribuna. Estados Unidos ha sido el receptor, no la fuente, del imperialismo cultural. La Escuela de Nueva York ha sido la síntesis de muchas influencias, pero especialmente es la única heredera directa del renacimiento mexicano. Si nosotros fallamos en reconocer a nuestros padres, eso no significa que ustedes deban fallar en reconocer a sus hijos. [aplausos]

Aracy Amaral.

Esta intervención mía, que será la última. En esta intervención me gustaría hacer referencia. Aquí en esta reunión estamos como se esperaba, además, haciendo o trabajando en torno a ideas, pero no a obras. Si acaso hiciéramos referencia a obras, probablemente sería acerca de obras de artistas consagrados de nombres internacionalmente conocidos, porque casi no se abordó aquí, no se planteó el problema de los artistas de una generación intermediaria o de artistas jóvenes que luchan por plantear o por colocar una nueva forma de expresión.

Ese me parece a lo mejor un vacío de esta reunión. Por el otro lado, me gustaría también añadir algo al problema del artista que sale de su país de América Latina y que va al exterior, a Nueva York, como a París. Manrique respondió a una estudiante que le hizo una pregunta a propósito. Yo añadiría que exactamente en esta opción que hace el artista, también se revela el aspecto latinoamericano, por que el artista se reúne en grupos y entonces en ese aspecto de segregación de gueto que ocurre en el exterior, ocurre también una preservación de sus tradiciones natales. Ahora, me gustaría antes de terminar, hacer una referencia como contestación a una observación hecha por la señora Duncan, que no me parece que pueda dejar pasar sin una respuesta, cuando ella hizo referencia a la interesante contribución que la economía puede traer al medio cultural.

Yo le contestaría al contrario con una frase de Eduardo Galeano, un escritor uruguayo, que dice que se da categoría de cultura universal a la cultura de una ideología de los centros dominantes económicamente. Dice también Galeano, que el día en que la economía se internacionaliza, la cultura también se internacionaliza. Es decir, verse a sí propio con los ojos del país que oprime económicamente y culturalmente es lo que pasa en esas ocasiones. Es por eso que es verdaderamente difícil a un artista sometido a una dependencia económica hacer ver su verdadera fase.

Señor Góngora.

Yo quisiera agregar a lo que ha dicho Aracy Amaral, que lo ha descrito tan bien. Como un comentario a lo que la señora Duncan dijo esta mañana de la preponderancia de los medios o los negocios en auspiciar el arte, crearían quizá una mayor dependencia del artista de esas instituciones, de esos negocios. Yo creo que si el hombre de negocios es una persona ética, podría ser que su auspicio de ciertas corrientes fuera válida.

La mayoría de las veces están apoyadas por unos intereses que no son tan claros ni tan éticos. Producen un desequilibrio y una auspiciación de tendencias que de por sí llevan algunos intereses. Es un hecho que ya conocemos, lo que los negocios han producido en el arte. Si hablamos con peligro del arte oficial, yo creo que con mayor peligro debíamos hablar del arte de los negocios. Muy bien conocemos el arte de corporación, el arte de los bancos, el arte de los aeropuertos y es muy posible que este arte, que se tenga que ver en aeropuertos, que se tenga que ver en bancos, es un arte completamente decorativo, es un arte en que muchos aspectos ha cesado de tener una vitalidad rebelde.

También en mi caso como pintor eretómano, ¿Qué hombre de negocios quisiera poner uno de mis dibujos o una de mis pinturas en un banco? Yo creo que en ese caso, la expresión de un artista que habla en estos términos estaría completamente coartada. Bien sabemos, el caso de cómo después de que la pintura de Mondrian se hizo popular en una caja de Kleenex, la industria de Kleenex retiró la caja del mercado porque creían que con esto estarían en alguna forma ofendiendo a sus clientes.

También pasa el caso típico de las cajas Brillo de Warhol o inclusive de la sopa Campbell, cuando creo que inclusive la industria ha cambiado la etiqueta porque no quiere ser en ninguna forma, no quiere crear una controversia. Ahora, volviendo otra vez al término del pintor y eretómano. ¿En qué forma la buena gente de negocios pondrían en su casa mis dibujos para ser visto por toda la familia? ¿En qué forma podrían auspiciar algo que después de todo, siendo erótico, puede llegar a la—

Lo puede poner en la casa chica.

Puede llegar— [risas] Quizás puede llegar a la explotación de lo que se llama explotación sexual, que ya sabemos muy bien por lo que ha pasado con [unintelligible 00:28:20] . Ya sabemos cuántos millones de dólares ha hecho.

A riesgo de desentonar, vuelvo a las generalidades. Tengo la impresión de que bajo los monólogos que se han venido sucediendo en este simposio opera una pugna entre el artista y el crítico, ambos temerosos. El uno, presa del temor de perder importancia. El otro, miedoso de sacar la cabeza y de reclamar el derecho a una actividad que complemente la creación artística, ya que todavía se siente considerado un hombre de segunda clase, un parásito, un escritor o un pintor fracasado. En realidad, estamos viviendo, creo yo, el reflejo de un hito más del desarrollo de la cultura latinoamericana, a saber, el afloramiento del hombre pensante que se echa a la espalda la tarea de aclarar la obra de arte mediante la razón y las consiguientes ideas y conceptos.

It is pointless to return to the question of whether the image precedes the idea, the percept the concept, or vice versa. Both processes are human, social, and artistic. It has been said that art criticism in Latin America is poor. Others have argued that it is not directed at the artist, but at the public. It is poor, certainly, and will remain so as long as there is no vigorous theory of art and art history to support it.

It is aimed at the public because today there is more interest in the relationship between the work of art and the recipient or their society than in the relationship between the work and the artist. In this way, the critic takes art as a sociocultural phenomenon, [inaudible 00:01:12] creating models for reading works of art, models for appreciating their local flavor, as Dore Ashton referred to, and their universal flavor. In other words, it proposes perceptual or linguistic-visual patterns that replace those instilled by society, by systems of domination.

Criticism, in short, contributes to creating the intellectual space referred to by Octavio Paz, which serves as a receptacle for artistic creation. Let it be clear that I am talking about models in the plural, not an exclusive, dictatorial model or one with strong sentimental cohesion. Artistic creation and criticism must develop in complete sensory and intellectual freedom, allowing them to introspect on our reality, both internal and external, psychological, social, local, and global.

If possible, by delving into our unconscious to free it from contradictions and imperialism, because introspection is the best form of resistance. I fear that if the struggle between artists and critics continues in Latin America instead of entering into a mutual and intimate collaboration, the development of Latin American art will continue to be delayed, and cultural imperialism and local dirigisme will continue to run rampant.

Mr. Concha? Is he not here?

In theory, my intervention makes more sense in relation to literary issues. I think that at this point it would be very difficult for me to speak when words are fractured to such an extent that introspection is said to be the best form of resistance. When introspection is said to be the best form of resistance, I don't know how it is possible to continue speaking. I simply feel that it has been completely dissolved.

Mr. Bayón?

Ms. Barnitz?

Sí. I wanted to talk about art criticism, especially making some comparisons between North and South American criticism. This is a generality, I will mention a specific name but first I wanted to make a comment about what Góngora just said. I agree in principle with what he said, but he's talking about the decorative appearance of some art that decorates corporations and airports, etcetera. I just wanted to comment on the fact that it's not the art, but the context that makes it that way.

What I wanted to say was that, for instance, I believe in a kind of freedom, the same kind of freedom in art criticism that I do for art itself. I very much appreciate what I consider an enviable quality, the anarchistic style of art criticism, say, that Marta Traba practices because instead of attempting a very tight-knit methodology, which makes something else out of art, she actually defends and champions certain artists whom she encourages to work freely so that they can get stimulation from this encouragement and do not have to look entirely to places such as Paris and New York for their stimulation, because they have it right there.

For instance, I would like to say that one cannot make any comparisons because, for instance, in a place like New York, art critics are generally conditioned by the media. They very quickly get bored by things. I know some who don't want to deal with certain kinds of art because they were dealing with it last week. They felt that they'd already said what needed to be said about it. I think that we've all run into this situation when we wanted to discuss something that we felt there was more to say about, but others felt that we shouldn't.

I hate the word methodology, but that seems to be terribly important to some critics in New York, who feel that the methodology is more important than what they are writing about. For instance, the kind of style of art criticism that they use is somewhat linked to literary criticism, and we've already established there were two different things that can't be dealt with the same way. For instance, in the early 60s, the methodology involved only talking about the visible part of the iceberg.

This was perhaps all right for abstract expressionism. I think it perhaps was better for pop art, but now, of course, since 1968 and after that with the coup in Chile, it suddenly became fashionable to be political in art criticism in North America. Many of the critics who are writing this way haven't the faintest idea of what they're dealing with. They're simply dealing with something that's in the air and they are still part of an art establishment.

This art establishment, I think, is making it difficult for certain artists who are not working within the format that is expected of them at that time. This also affects Latin American artists who are in New York, and who are working in New York. I don't know if I have to see something else here that I wanted to say.

Anyway, I feel that it is very important that an art critic remains as free as the artist, in order to operate preferably without or being able to resist, and I use also the word resistencia, the constant programmation that comes through the media in, certainly the northeast, and I think it does pretty much all over the country. It's something that many artists, North American artists also, are fully aware of, but they cannot very well deal with it because they too are dependent on patronage, art criticism, and the media.

I wanted to add one thing, or two, "Por últimos", they always say, to answer Dr. Greeter. He is absolutely right about the input from Mexico in the 30s, but I think that this does not mean that it is still going on because the situation has been reversed. Secondly, por último, I know, 30 seconds. I wanted to say that where artists have gone to Paris for inspiration, as they have presumably, they have to New York for stimulation, they were able to integrate in Paris, work, and be recognized there without the same kind of patronage that has existed here. Thank you.

We'll hear now from a North American artist, Alice Baber.

I want to talk about the survival of art artists and the art world, both in Latin America and internationally. I recently went to a panel discussion of museum directors in San Francisco. This was a short panel, for four hours the artist was never mentioned in any way, except once to mention that artists who didn't pull in the gate would have to be limited in the future seasons. The critics, of course, were not mentioned. I'm rather grateful for these three days in which the idea, the old fashion idea, that the positions of the artist and of the critics can affect the world. Whether they're avant-garde or vanguard. Artists in general like the free flow of ideas and are not particularly smog about their societies, which, obviously do not like the free flow of ideas.

Certain centers are bogged down in Paris, New York, London, Rome, Munich, etcetera. With auction house prices, overexposure of certain names, customs officials, insurance, and taxes, follow the leader politics. The conflict of interest situations in high places that no one wants to discuss. Latin America, I think, has a number of choices to enter this arena, make alternative but more vital centers, or help create reform movements, in which with a very practical viewpoint, the good guys in the morality play, can contain the bad guys.

Naturally, everyone on this panel is part of the good guys and I really believe that it can be done. I would like to hear some practical discussion, either at this panel or in future panels. Thank you.

Mister Catlin.

I want to say a few words about the importance of art history, to the future of Latin American art. We have seen, if we look at the Latin American scene collectively and in time, the experience of exploring the various possible avenues, for both national and international Latin American art. Really, a three-quarters of a century tradition of explorations, of use, and assimilation. Sometimes in the forefront of discovery in the formal areas of art in Western society and also of innovation, a unique innovation in the social and ethnic areas of art.

This is a history of creative exploration, which is just as much a part of Latin American experience, overall experience, as its social struggles. It has left its mark in the Latin American personality and its many aspects varieties and sectors. It seems to me that it is important to know this, in order to arrive at a sense of where Latin American art is, at the moment, or if it goes ahead in the future and to know this experience in order to have an effective critical point of view. The record is really phenomenal when you go over it.

From the time of the Sindicato in Mexico, on through the developments of the first half, in the middle of the century, through the Biennial of São Paulo, in all of the countries. This record, as much as the record of the 19th century, is in danger of being lost if we do not take a systematic catalog of what is happened. I was in Venezuela a year and a half ago and I counted 80 artists, whom I felt were important to know in order to get an objective idea of what it happened in Venezuelan art, since the independence period.

When you multiply those 80 artists, by say 20 pictures that may have survived or 20 sculptures and try to incompose those in an objective study, you are completely at a loss, because you are not able to get an objective review of what these individuals have done in their time and evaluate what the contribution may have been to their time. May I just say this?

One minute.

I think it is too early to say that we can have, in the Latin American area, as we have not in many other areas, a systematic art historical review or survey of everything that has happened. We have this problem in the United States, but I think what is terribly important at this point, is to begin the cataloging of our surviving works of art that represent a priceless heritage for the modern Latin American mind and the future of its art.

I'm going to read a question, which I believe is from a student and I rather think is a question that several other students also had in mind. This is addressed to all the panelists and I hope that some of you will attempt to answer it. "Although there appears to be a consensus among the panelists, that Latin American art today does exist as a distinctive expression, no one has satisfactorily defined what elements make up this expression".

What exactly is distinctively Latin American about contemporary art created by Latin American artists? Is it a question of content, style, or technique? What do the works appearing in the Plural exhibit, for example, have in common?. Is there anyone who will address themself after that question?

Mr. Manrique.

That is, to take a leap, to jump. In the same way that it is possible to call literature metaphysical, to call art science, I do not understand the distinction, this old distinction between Latin America and the rest of the world, since, for me, truth has no center. Truth cannot be centered in Latin America, but in a game of mirrors that transcends us all.

Mr. Concha.

Since the question is so well put, it really works up an appetite to try, and I emphasize, to sketch out a certain answer. Of course, very clearly, I believe that Latin American art, and I am speaking somewhat in general terms, both visual arts and literature proper, cannot be defined by content. We already know, we were talking here about Muhammad's camels, we know that it is not necessary to include specific American types for that art to be authentically American.

Clearly, the answer to the question about content is therefore no. Now, I don't think that art can be described through techniques either. I believe that the definition, for example, of contemporary art, whether literary or visual, in relation to the incorporation of techniques, also ignores the organic nature of cultures and the organic nature of the social processes in which those cultures are embedded. This discussion, for example, would have astonished sociologists or anthropologists such as Malinowski, who as early as 1944, in several books, for example, referred to this.

All literary history or art history that attempts to explain changes or modifications in sensibility in Latin America through the incorporation of literary or artistic techniques misrepresents the fact that culture, including art and literature, corresponds to organic processes of national and continental development. Now, I believe, what remains is form, the formal aspect. This is an extremely complex aspect that naturally cannot be easily developed.

You only have to visit any exhibition to see that there is a variety of forms, trends, and representative orientations. My answer, to be very concise, and you will surely disagree, is that Latin American art can only accept that adjective, can only be entitled to that adjective, when it appropriates a territory or a cultural space, a space that is whole.

I believe that a Latin American artist is a Latin American artist when their experience as an individual is so profound, so rich, that it is not limited to circumstantial and anecdotal issues, but rather that depth, that wealth of experience, coincides with a group experience, a social experience, and ultimately a historical experience. I am not saying that, for example, artists have to refer specifically to political or historical issues.

There are artists who have internalized the world in which they live to such an extent that they define purely plastic rhythms in an almost abstract way, as in the case of the young Bolivian artist Zilveti.

This time, through these pure plastic undulations, we perceived not only a rhythm of the landscape of La Paz, a rhythm of the landscape and the Bolivian terrain, but also, through those same broken lines, we perceived a whole social problem that was not present in concept, not present in statements, but present through colors and shapes that deeply captured that reality through an experience that was in tune with the times and circumstances.

Specifically, my answer would be no content, no technique. Forms, in the sense of appropriation of a cultural territory that we can define as Latin American.

I would like to ask Mr. Ronald Christ to elaborate on what he said this morning when he described structuralism as some of the most interesting fiction to be read today. I would also like to suggest that Professor Romano de Sant'Anna respond to Christ's reaction, if not Christian, then at least Christian.

Was there another hand up? Ronald.

I don't think that this is the time or the place to defend my notion that structuralism is perhaps the most interesting fiction being written today. Perhaps, I said I would emphasize once again that I meant that as a very high, not of a compliment, a very high level of description. I had in mind the work of Lévi-Strauss, for example, when I made the statement. I think it would be much more useful if Mr. Santana commented, by the way, I hope of contradiction to what I said.

Sant'anna.

Dr. Ellison answered part of the question this morning, which Ronald had also answered. Christ's statement reminded me of a quote by Borges, who said that metaphysics is a branch of fantasy literature. This idea that metaphysics is a branch of fantasy literature, or that theory can also be fantasy literature, reinforces my belief that there is definitely no separation between genres and certain spaces that we create.

Mr. Morais.

I would like to respond to the student's comment by saying that Latin American specificity should not be sought in its referential aspect either. I think Felgueiras ended his presentation yesterday by saying that our specificity should be sought in the future and not in the past. I believe that the very nature of our art lies precisely in the pursuit of this general desire for construction.

It is worth mentioning that this is not very clear, but I believe that the artist, through his work, seeking this organization of our reality, participates in a broader, more general project, in which he is obviously not alone. So, I have the impression that we talk a lot here about all the past aspects of our Latin American art, and we talk very little about a future perspective for our art.

I think Felgueiras provided some information and made a very interesting point. Similarly, Anathema also began yesterday by talking about the need to formulate a Latin American visual ideology. So, what we should be seeking is precisely this desire for organization, not in purely referential aspects.

Está de más volver al problema de si la imagen precede a la idea, el percepto al concepto, o al revés. Los dos procesos son humanos, sociales y artísticos. Se dijo que la crítica de arte en Latinoamérica es mala. Otros postularon que no estaba dirigida al artista, sino al público. Es mala, por cierto, y lo será mientras no exista una teoría de arte y una historia de arte vigorosa que la abastezcan.

Está dirigida al público porque hoy interesa la relación de la obra de arte con el receptor o su sociedad, más que la relación de la obra con el artista. De tal modo, que el crítico toma el arte como fenómeno sociocultural, [inaudible 00:01:12] creando modelos de lectura de las obras de arte, modelos de apreciación de su sabor local, al que se refería Dore Ashton, y su sabor universal. En otras palabras, propone patrones perceptuales o lingüístico-visuales que reemplacen los inculcados por la sociedad, por los sistemas de dominación.

La crítica, en fin, contribuye a crear el espacio intelectual a que alude Octavio Paz, y que sirve de receptor a la creación artística. Conste que hablo de modelos en plural, no de un modelo excluyente, dictatorial, o de fuerte cohesión sentimental. La creación y la crítica de arte deben desarrollarse en plena libertad sensitiva e intelectual que les permite la introspección en nuestra realidad, tanto interior como exterior, psicológica, social, local y mundial.
