Annotations for Places: Uruguay

It would never have occurred to literary critics in the 19th century or at the beginning of the 20th century to separate the work in a sense of autonomy, as is currently practiced in universities. I believe that this second moment is linked precisely to the development and rise of the middle classes in Latin American countries, which naturally have different national specificities. Chile is very different from Uruguay. It is very different in countries with a predominantly indigenous social composition, such as Mexico or Peru. Naturally, I cannot go into the unique national characteristics here.

Nunca habría pensado ni se le habría ocurrido a críticos literarios del siglo XIX o de comienzos de siglo desligar la obra en un sentido de la autonomía, tal como se practica en los centros universitarios actualmente. Yo creo que este segundo momento está ligado precisamente al desarrollo y al ascenso de las capas medias de los países latinoamericanos, que naturalmente tienen especificidades nacionales diferentes. En Chile es muy diferente a Uruguay. Es muy diferente en los países de composición social predominantemente indígena; México o Perú. Naturalmente, no puedo entrar allí en los rasgos singulares nacionales.

Perhaps I cannot generalize. I am thinking mainly about Mexico, but I imagine that many of Mexico's characteristics apply, even though the only other Latin American country I have lived in is Uruguay, which is like the other extreme, I suppose. Uruguay in 1964, I should clarify. It was the other extreme. This perhaps allows me to have both ends of the spectrum. Perhaps this makes it possible to generalize some things about Mexico.

It seems to me that the influence of university criticism on the real literary life of Latin American countries, judging by what I have seen in Mexico and to some extent in Uruguay, is still distant, that there are not many connections. What is being done in universities has very little impact.

Tal vez no puedo generalizar. Estoy pensando sobre todo en México, pero me imagino que muchos de los rasgos de México, aunque el único otro país de Latinoamérica donde he vivido es Uruguay, que es como el otro polo, supongo. El Uruguay además de 1964, debo aclarar. Era el otro polo. Esto tal vez me permite tener los dos extremos del espectro. Tal vez esto haga que se pueda generalizar algunas cosas de México.

A mí me parece que la influencia de la crítica universitaria en la verdadera vida literaria de los países latinoamericanos, a juzgar por lo que he visto en México y un poco en Uruguay, me parece que es todavía distante, que no hay muchas conexiones. Lo que se está haciendo en las universidades trasciende muy poco.

The case of Marcha, which occurred relatively recently. I say relatively recently because many things have happened in Marcha. El caso de Marcha, que ocurrió hace relativamente poco. Digo hace relativamente poco, porque han ocurrido muchas cosas en Marcha. Lo peor que ocurrió es que se premió un cuento en donde se hablaba de las torturas de un jefe de policía uruguayo. Como no está permitido decir en Uruguay que hay torturas, y menos que las ejercen los jefes de policía, pusieron presos al director del periódico, al secretario de redacción, a los tres jurados que habían--

It seems to me that it would be somewhat simplistic to mention four or five informational sources, without acknowledging the complexity of the artistic creation process. At this point, in the Latin American case, without alluding to the reality of the internationalist area, which I consider to include Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, and the south of Brazil up to São Paulo, as well as Venezuela. A mí me parece que sería un tanto simplista mencionar cuatro o cinco fuentes informacionales, no atentando para la complejidad del proceso de creación artística. En este punto, en el caso latinoamericano, sin aludir a la realidad del área internacionalista, que yo considero como parte de Chile, Argentina, Uruguay y el sur de Brasil hasta São Paulo, además de Venezuela. Creo más en la emergencia del inconsciente colectivo mencionado por Juan Acha. 

I could then go back to what the Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano said last week in a conference in São Paulo, when he stated that in reality, there cannot be a national culture in a country whose material economic foundations are foreign or guided from outside, as he put it. I would remind us that we always have to return, in any debate about Latin American art, to the issue of the scholarly and the popular. Because in reality, the popular is our reality. The scholarly are the models, and that always returns in our Latin American environment, especially through advertising.

Yo podría volver entonces a lo que declaró la semana pasada en São Paulo en una conferencia el escritor uruguayo Eduardo Galeano cuando habló de que en realidad no puede haber una cultura nacional en un país cuyas bases materiales económicas son extranjeras o guiadas desde afuera, como dijo él. Yo haría recordar que siempre nosotros tengamos que volver en un debate sobre arte latinoamericano, sobre el problema de lo erudito y de lo popular. Porque en realidad lo popular es nuestra realidad. Lo erudito son los modelos y eso vuelve siempre en nuestro medio ambiente latinoamericano, sobre todo a través de la publicidad.
