First his work as an anthologist. He published two collections of Peruvian narrators in 1968, and in another book entitled Estos 13, 1973, he studied the new Peruvian poetry, presenting both documents and a selection of young poets. I believe that his conversations with Luis Alberto Sanchez were published in book form, also in the same year of '73. Oviedo has collaborated with valuable works in collective anthologies. He is a prolific writer of Palma, Velarde, Salazar Bondy, Vargas Llosa, Cardenal and others. Finally, as if this were not enough, I would like to draw attention to his work devoted to the study of contemporary novelists. To García Márquez and especially to his book on Vargas Llosa, entitled The Invention of a Reality, which appeared in 1970. Having said all this, what remains for me now is to thank him for his presence with us and to extend to him the warmest welcome to Austin.

Publica dos colecciones de narradores peruanos en el año 68, en otro libro titulado Estos 13, 1973, estudia la nueva poesía peruana, presentando a la vez documentos y una selección de los poetas jóvenes. Creo que sus conversaciones con Luis Alberto Sánchez se publicaron en forma de libro, también en el mismo año del 73. Oviedo ha colaborado con valiosos trabajos en antologías colectivas. Es proliguista de Palma, Velarde, Salazar Bondy, Vargas Llosa, Cardenal y otros. Por último, como si no fuera ya suficiente, no quiero dejar de llamar la atención sobre su obra consagrada al estudio de los novelistas contemporáneos. A García Márquez y de modo especial sobre su libro escrito acerca de Vargas Llosa, titulado La invención de una realidad, que apareció en el año 70. Dicho todo esto, lo que me queda ahora es darle las gracias por su presencia con nosotros y extenderle también a él la más cordial bienvenida a Austin.

From here in Austin, I understand that Manuel Felguérez will also be going to MIT with a Guggenheim fellowship. Because Felguérez, among other things, is a painter—or rather, an artist. Painter, sculptor, and also dedicated to graphic arts—who uses a strange thing called a computer. I hope it doesn’t compute me too much or this table too much either, but he is indeed a remarkable artist who has tried or is trying to combine the problem of art and science, which qualifies him very well for the topic of this panel.

De acá de Austin tengo entendido también que Manuel Felguérez se dirigirá a MIT con una beca Guggenheim. Porque Felguérez entre otras cosas es un pintor—o un artista, mejor dicho. Pintor, escultor y también dedicado a las artes gráficas—que usa una extraña cosa que se llama computadora. Espero que no me compute demasiado y no compute demasiado también esta mesa, pero sí es un notable artista que ha tratado o está tratando de combinar el problema del arte y la ciencia, lo cual lo califica muy bien para el tema de esta mesa.
