Annotations for Places: England

Certain centers are bogged down in Paris, New York, London, Rome, Munich, etcetera. With auction house prices, overexposure of certain names, customs officials, insurance, and taxes, follow the leader politics. The conflict of interest situations in high places that no one wants to discuss. Latin America, I think, has a number of choices to enter this arena, make alternative but more vital centers, or help create reform movements, in which with a very practical viewpoint, the good guys in the morality play, can contain the bad guys.

Ciertos centros están estancados en París, Nueva York, Londres, Roma, Múnich, etcétera. Con los precios de las casas de subastas, la sobreexposición de ciertos nombres, los funcionarios de aduanas, los seguros y los impuestos, se sigue la política del líder. Las situaciones de conflicto de intereses en las altas esferas que nadie quiere discutir. Creo que América Latina tiene varias opciones para entrar en este ámbito, crear centros alternativos pero más vitales, o ayudar a crear movimientos de reforma, en los que, desde un punto de vista muy práctico, los buenos de la obra moralista puedan contener a los malos.

What I would like to point out is that there remains, without a doubt, a great contradiction in Latin America among us, among the artists, still even in our behavior. Because if in the 19th century we were importers of manufactured goods from England, but from France we imported the model for cultural behavior, alongside a Creole behavior, we can say that today there is already a Latin American behavior in terms of conduct, but as a cultural expression we continue importing models. Insecure, therefore, about our popular roots. I think I will stop here.

Lo que a mí me gustaría señalar es que permanece, sin duda, una gran contradicción en América Latina entre nosotros, entre los artistas, todavía entre nuestro comportamiento. Porque si en el siglo XIX éramos importadores de manufacturado de Inglaterra, pero de Francia importábamos el modelo para el comportamiento cultural, además paralelamente a un comportamiento criollo, nosotros podemos decir que hoy ya hay un comportamiento latinoamericano en el sentido de behavior, pero como expresión cultural nosotros seguimos importando modelos. Inseguros, por tanto, de nuestras raíces populares. Yo creo que voy a parar. 

If the circumstances are harsh enough, repressive enough, as Mr. Mindlin said this morning, in fact intolerable, artists respond, they rebel, like anyone else. This was true during the Depression in the United States, during the popular front days in England and Paris, and for us during the Vietnam War. 

Si las circunstancias son lo suficientemente duras, lo suficientemente represivas, como dijo el Sr. Mindlin esta mañana, de hecho intolerables, los artistas responden, se rebelan, como cualquier otra persona. Esto fue cierto durante la Depresión en Estados Unidos, durante los días del frente popular en Inglaterra y París, y para nosotros durante la Guerra de Vietnam.
