Annotations for People: Pythagoras

We might even believe that it is a better poem than Guillén's to Pedro Salinas. For example, if we are very ignorant, if we are a little more sophisticated, we realize that what it means is that music calms the air, that music has an Orphic effect. If we are a little more cultured, we recognize the quote from Pythagoras. If we continue reading the poem, we discover that it is about the music of the spheres.

Literature, in addition to conveying these Pythagorean, Orphic, or simply friendly messages—Salinas was a friend of Fray Luis—conveys messages about its own structure, about its own text. It seems to me that if we are literary critics, it is quite difficult to become a literary critic, so that we also try to be philosophical, sociological, epistemological critics, and so on. If we are literary critics, we must begin by examining the message that every work contains at the level of its own structure.

Si somos críticos literarios, debemos empezar por examinar el mensaje que toda obra contiene al nivel de su propia estructura.
