On the other hand, I saw some critics reject the use of literature as credible evidence of a political situation. Some critics denied that a literary work could serve as a mirror of a particular society. Some denied the representative intention of a literary work. Some, I believe, viewed literature and its practice as something univocal—as literature with a message—that, to me, seemed to lead toward a kind of updated costumbrismo (literary depiction of social customs). I think other critics sought at least to imagine the possibility of a literature that wasn’t, let’s say, typical literature.

From that, I believe, comes Paz’s allegiance to Dada and Surrealism as abnormal elements that effectively undermine and topple totemized structures. In Santana’s contribution, I recall the mention—perhaps the quote—of the use of kitsch as a way of undermining and overthrowing a model culture. Furthermore, if I remember correctly, Octavio Paz emphasized that mere satire is not a sign of rupture but a sign of hardened aesthetic conformism. That is, I saw in this polarization of critical methods on the first day a push both for and against mimetic impulse.

I was saying that a summary is certainly difficult, since so many intelligent, subtle, fine, profound things have been said. We are going to try, at the risk of not betraying what has been said here by all the participants in the field of plastic arts, the ideas that in my opinion, in our opinion, are fundamental.

Perhaps this has brought a freshness throughout the area that is now emerging visibly in Latin America. Therefore, my answer to does present-day Latin American art exist as a distinct expression is yes. The collective cultural experience in the kaleidoscope or mosaic formation of the Latin American region has produced a unique composite of artistic expression which could only emerge from that region and combination of aesthetic achievement in plastic art.

Most of the artists are in contact with both national and international realities, in contrast to the School of Paris and School of New York in its existence, despite specific geographic locations of the artist. The artist speaks for himself within a global scope and often brings a cosmic sense, perhaps as we've heard, related to the literature of the area.

The Latin American artists of this post-war generation have achieved individual vision, plastic expression, and a new horizon in the world of art. It is recognizable outside national boundaries due to the strong personalities achieved by their individuality. I recognize them whether I see them in Switzerland, Australia, or wherever I go. They have a common denominator of a discipline as artists and a breadth of vision in their work.

We have yet to define the differences between art history and art criticism and a number of our discussants have requested further comments on this subject. We are fortunate to have among us distinguished art historians both from North and South America. I hope they will speak up.

The lack of a well-established art historical framework for Latin American art based on an objective research and available in a number of languages seems to me to be the reason for the constant search for an identity recognizable both in national and international terms. The achievements of this plural, mosaic, kaleidoscopic movement of the last 30 or 40 years need to be deeply analyzed and put into perspective within a scholarly procedure.

In my opinion, this would strengthen the role of the objective critic in relation to the Latin American artist by giving an established place in the exciting history of contemporary art to the undeniable contributions of the Latin American artist to some of the movements now recognized as vanguard. The essential question was asked yesterday and I believe it was asked by a student. How do we delineate the movements and currents in Latin American art? Speak out, charla bate-papo.

As far as I can see in the art, the plastic art aspect here -and I think Ronald Christ performed a very important service by emphasizing the fact that literary critics are dealing in the same medium as that which they are criticizing, whereas art critics always have to suffer by being translators into another language and always, I should say, always inadequate. Any art critic always feels inadequate -that it is a little more difficult.

The questions that were raised fall into, I think, very few categories, but all of them worth pursuing in a more coherent way. On the practical side, as señor Gamboa pointed out, there is much to be done. It seems to me that all the questions circulated around the problem of diffusion, which is not a problem of South America or North America, but a problem everywhere, and the mechanics of that diffusion, I believe that Mrs. Duncan is correct in saying that we must have a richer literature, more references. People should be able to find, to have access to coherent accounts of the past. We do have the means in such symposia of being a little sharper in how we would approach that.

On the impractical or the nonpractical side, it seems to me that the old chestnut that possibly Mr. Oviedo thinks is bypassed but seems to be always with us, the old problem as to whether there is such a thing as an imminent history or an autonomous history of the plastic arts, or formal history, or whether there is something which one of the students used the word that he was the first to use and I think is still a very useful word, whether there's something transcendent in the plastic arts to which we should turn our serious attention.

La mayoría de los artistas están en contacto con realidades tanto nacionales como internacionales, en contraste con la Escuela de París y la Escuela de Nueva York en su existencia, a pesar de ubicaciones geográficas específicas del artista. El artista habla por sí mismo dentro de un ámbito global y a menudo aporta un sentido cósmico, tal vez como hemos oído, relacionado con la literatura de la zona.

Los artistas latinoamericanos de esta generación de posguerra han logrado una visión individual, una expresión plástica y un nuevo horizonte en el mundo del arte. Son reconocibles fuera de las fronteras nacionales debido a la fuerte personalidad que han logrado con su individualidad. Los reconozco tanto si los veo en Suiza como en Australia o dondequiera que vaya. Tienen en común una disciplina como artistas y una amplitud de miras en su obra.

Aún tenemos que definir las diferencias entre historia del arte y crítica de arte, y varios de nuestros ponentes han solicitado más comentarios al respecto. Tenemos la suerte de contar entre nosotros con distinguidos historiadores del arte tanto de Norteamérica como de Sudamérica. Espero que se expresen.

La falta de un marco histórico del arte latinoamericano bien establecido, basado en una investigación objetiva y disponible en varios idiomas, me parece la razón de la búsqueda constante de una identidad reconocible tanto en términos nacionales como internacionales. Los logros de este movimiento plural, mosaico y caleidoscópico de los últimos 30 o 40 años necesitan ser analizados en profundidad y puestos en perspectiva dentro de un procedimiento académico.

En mi opinión, esto reforzaría el rol del crítico objetivo en relación con el artista latinoamericano al otorgar un lugar establecido en la apasionante historia del arte contemporáneo a las innegables contribuciones del artista latinoamericano a algunos de los movimientos hoy reconocidos como de vanguardia. La pregunta esencial se planteó ayer y creo que la formuló un estudiante. ¿Cómo delimitamos los movimientos y corrientes en el arte latinoamericano? Habla, charla bate-papo.

Por lo que puedo ver en el arte, el aspecto del arte plástico aquí -y creo que Ronald Christ prestó un servicio muy importante al subrayar el hecho de que los críticos literarios tratan en el mismo medio que aquello que critican, mientras que los críticos de arte siempre tienen que sufrir por ser traductores a otro idioma y siempre, debería decir, siempre inadecuados. Cualquier crítico de arte siempre se siente inadecuado, que es un poco más difícil.

Las cuestiones que se plantearon se encuadran, en mi opinión, en muy pocas categorías, pero todas ellas merecen ser tratadas de forma más coherente. En el aspecto práctico, como señaló el señor Gamboa, queda mucho por hacer. Me parece que todas las cuestiones que circulan en torno al problema de la difusión, que no es un problema de América del Sur o de América del Norte, sino un problema en todas partes, y la mecánica de esa difusión, creo que la señora Duncan tiene razón al decir que debemos tener una literatura más rica, más referencias. La gente debe poder encontrar, tener acceso a relatos coherentes del pasado. En este tipo de simposios tenemos los medios para ser un poco más agudos en la forma de enfocar esto.

En el lado no práctico o no práctico, me parece que la vieja castaña que posiblemente el Sr. Oviedo piensa que está soslayada pero que parece estar siempre con nosotros, el viejo problema de si existe algo así como una historia inminente o una historia autónoma de las artes plásticas, o historia formal, o si existe algo que uno de los estudiantes utilizó la palabra que él fue el primero en utilizar y creo que sigue siendo una palabra muy útil, si existe algo trascendente en las artes plásticas a lo que deberíamos dirigir nuestra seria atención.

Thirdly, it's quite apparent, and I don't think this is limited to Latin American artists, that social turbulence everywhere has forced us all into a position of malaise. I think it's very important that that malaise be recognized, its components identified. In the plastic arts, certainly, we must recognize that there are tensions everywhere.

I come from a large city, and we all seem to agree that art movements as such, seem to have a cosmopolitan source, and that large cities, large centers seem to sponsor definition, that these socially turbulent problems affect the plastic artist as it affects the literary artist, and they must be dealt with, as I think Marta Traba has attempted to throw off the old mannerisms and to take a position to which one can respond.

I think we should look to Europe for a parallel also, and to recognize the force of accidental history, or the appearance of, I'm going to use the great man theory, that in Europe, you are speaking here about Latin American art, and what seems to be the cement, is the fact that Latin languages, Portuguese and Spanish, are used in this continent called Latin America.

However, in Europe, we have many different languages in many different countries, sharing certain Latin traditions, ancient Greek traditions, Aristotle, etc. All the same, in Holland, to this day, there exists a very strong movement, which art historians are wont to think exists because there was a Mondrian.

I wanted, as my final intervention, to refer to two points. One, perhaps a little particular, the other, I believe, much more general. The first derives from the statements made yesterday by Maestro Rufino Tamayo. The importance of master Tamayo's work for me is so extraordinary that he is the only painter I have cited as the creator of the basis for the authentication of Latin American painting, which I mentioned in my first intervention. I believe that the statements of a man like him are extremely important.

The second point refers more to what was dealt with in the art symposium. I believe that, unlike, for example, what happened in the literature symposium, where it is evident what Professor Rodriguez Monegal said, that literary criticism is a genre of literature. In the art symposium it is evident that art criticism is not a genre of painting or sculpture. This is a very special situation to which I would like to draw the attention, by way of conclusion, of my fellow critics.

I believe that Fernando Gamboa, what he has of ghost because he travels so much, and of magician on the other hand, comes from being able to stretch a ridiculous budget to make a peculiar alchemy and to be able with a few cents to do something worthwhile at the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City. The problem is not that the country is so poor, which it is, but that being so poor, it allocates a truly ridiculous percentage of its budget to this type of activities.

Affirming its spiritual value and its poetic dimension, however old these words may seem, operating a resacralization of art in a sick society, by what Adorno calls, “The passion of the palpable”. Such responsibility of the artist and the critic can only be measured by his work, by the coherence of its internal structure and the will of that structure to be both history and sedimented social content.

I quote Adorno again, “Instead of being decoration or entertainment of small groups”, I don't mind that Monegal accuses me again of having only one idea. The best literature and the most splendid art have been made by maniacs, by writers of a single theme, like Onetti, of a single book. As for example, that immense Juan Rulfo, who has not even received a mention in this Latin American Literature Encounter.

That creative function of ours, parallel to that of the artists and as respectable as theirs, even though it is based on their work, I received that lesson many years ago when I read Octavio Paz's The Bow and the Lyre. When he made me understand, in an advanced chapter of the book, something that I, perhaps due to modesty, had never thought of, and that was that in contemporary art there is no advanced or avant-garde contemporary art that does not run parallel to criticism, which neither dictates it nor makes it totally explicit, but which is parallel to it.

I must therefore say, for those who are not informed, that in my country I have always represented an anti-conformist attitude, a fighting attitude, in the 50's, in the face of a Mexican painting that was in a dead end and that did not allow other paths for the artists of my country.

En tercer lugar, es bastante obvio, y no creo que esto se limite a los artistas latinoamericanos, que la agitación social nos ha obligado a todos a una posición de incomodidad. Creo que es muy importante que se reconozca este malestar y se identifiquen sus componentes. En las artes visuales, sin duda tenemos que reconocer que hay tensiones en todas partes.

Yo vengo de una gran ciudad, y todos parecemos estar de acuerdo en que los movimientos artísticos como tales, parecen tener un origen cosmopolita, y que las grandes ciudades, los grandes centros parecen auspiciar la definición, que estos problemas socialmente turbulentos afectan al artista plástico como afecta al artista literario, y hay que enfrentarse a ellos, como creo que Marta Traba ha intentado desprenderse de los viejos manierismos y tomar una posición a la que se pueda responder.

Creo que debemos mirar a Europa para encontrar un paralelo también, y reconocer la fuerza de la historia accidental, o la aparición de, voy a utilizar la teoría del gran hombre, que en Europa, usted está hablando aquí sobre el arte latinoamericano, y lo que parece ser el cemento, es el hecho de que las lenguas latinas, portugués y español, se utilizan en este continente llamado América Latina.

Sin embargo, en Europa, tenemos muchas lenguas diferentes en muchos países diferentes, compartiendo ciertas tradiciones latinas, tradiciones griegas antiguas, Aristóteles, etc. De todos modos, en Holanda, hasta el día de hoy, existe un movimiento muy fuerte, que los historiadores del arte suelen pensar que existe porque hubo un Mondrian.

Yo quería, como, seguramente, intervención final mía, referirme a dos puntos. Uno, quizá un poco particular, creo que el otro mucho más general. El primero deriva de las declaraciones hechas ayer por el maestro Rufino Tamayo. La importancia de la obra del maestro Tamayo para mí es tan extraordinaria que ha sido el único pintor que yo he citado como el creador de las bases de la autentificación de la pintura latinoamericana, que yo he citado en mi primera intervención. Creo que las declaraciones de un hombre como él son sumamente importantes.

El segundo punto se refiere más a lo tratado en el simposium de arte. Yo creo que, a diferencia, por ejemplo, de lo que ha ocurrido en el simposium de literatura, donde es evidente lo que ha dicho el profesor Rodríguez Monegal, de que la crítica literaria es un género de la literatura. En el simposium de arte es evidente que la crítica de arte no es un género de la pintura o de la escultura. Esto supone una situación muy especial sobre la cual yo quiero llamar la atención, a manera de conclusión, a mis colegas críticos.

Yo creo que Fernando Gamboa, lo que tiene de fantasma porque viaja tanto, y de mago por otro lado, le viene de poder estirar un ridículo presupuesto para hacer una alquimia peculiar y poder con unos cuantos centavos hacer algo que valga la pena en el Museo de Arte Moderno de la Ciudad de México. No es el problema que el país sea tan pobre, que sí lo es, sino que siendo así de pobre, destina a este tipo de actividades un porcentaje de su presupuesto, verdaderamente ridículo.

Afirmando su valor espiritual y su dimensión poética por más viejas que parezcan estas palabras, operando una resacralización del arte en una sociedad enferma, por lo que llama Adorno, "La pasión de lo palpable". Tal responsabilidad del artista y del crítico no puede medirse sino por su obra, por la coherencia de su estructura interna y la voluntad de esa estructura de ser a la vez historia y contenido social sedimentado.

Cito de nuevo a Adorno, "En cambio de ser decoración o entretenimiento de pequeños grupos", no me importa que Monegal vuelva a acusarme de tener una sola idea. La mejor literatura y el arte más espléndido, han sido hechos por maniáticos, por escritores de un solo tema, como Onetti, de un solo libro. Como por ejemplo, ese inmenso Juan Rulfo, que ni siquiera ha recibido una mención en este Encuentro de Literatura Latinoamericana.

Esa función creadora nuestra, paralela a la de los artistas y tan respetable como la de ellos, a pesar de que se base en la obra de ellos, esa lección la recibí hace muchos años leyendo El arco y la lira, de Octavio Paz. Cuando me hizo comprender, en un capítulo avanzado del libro, algo en que yo por modestia quizá nunca había pensado, y era que en el arte contemporáneo no hay arte contemporáneo avanzado o de vanguardia que no marche paralelo a una crítica, que ni le dicta ni la explicita totalmente, pero que es paralela de ella.

Debo por eso decir, para los que no estén informados, que en mi país he representado siempre una actitud anticonformista, una actitud luchadora, en los 50, frente a una pintura mexicana que se encontraba en un callejón sin salida y que no permitía otros caminos para los artistas de mi país.

That by no means meant that I did not admire abstract expressionist painting. I have always declared myself an admirer of the great figures of North American art like Jackson Pollock, de Kooning, Franz Kline, Motherwell, Adja Yunkers, and many others. I have also demonstrated—and written and said in countless lectures—that I fully understand American Pop Art and I recognize very important figures such as Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns, and Oldenburg. That does not mean that just because I admire them, I should follow what they propose merely because they operate from a metropolis that exports its art through magazines and publications with international reach.

Well, I will speak in Portuguese. This morning, Rodrigo Saavedra also spoke about a kind of terrorism of criticism, referring to Marta Traba. [laughter] I would like to emphasize that starting in the 1960s, what a Brazilian critic referred to as postmodern art begins to occur — the idea that the modern art period had already been surpassed and that we are now living in a postmodern art situation. The defining characteristic of this moment would be a continuous shift in positions. In that sense, not only can a critic also be an artist, but an artist can also be a critic.

In a certain sense, this is the nature, for example, of conceptual art, in that conceptual art today takes as its theme a reflection on art itself — thus, it has a topological character. This clearly leads to the point that was made yesterday, that critics and artists can therefore propose their own models.

In our case, I could explain this model based on, as I mentioned yesterday, our very well-defined constructive art from the 1950s. I could also here make a reference to Octavio Paz — he’s been mentioned, particularly when he speaks about the absence of critical thought in Latin America. And I believe that, at least in Brazil, there was a sustained and successful effort to theorize a form of critical thinking — this was the Brazilian Concrete movement.

It’s clear that the possible origins of this critical thought can be located in Europe, but the very fact that it persisted and underwent a process of nationalization, and [unintelligible 00:17:36] even took on a more organic character — for instance, with tropicalismo — shows that it had real effectiveness.

I would express a viewpoint that hasn't been brought in really. I'm an art historian. Our history has studied the primary form of art criticism which is by artist in their work. Creative art is a critical dialog with it sources and with the intended descendants, that is one might say that Otero, is a primary critic of Mondrian. Art criticism in words is always secondary, which is not to say is irrelevant. Researches at the University of Rochester has discovered that the brain has what they call infinite capacity to start visual images. The start is in the unconscious mind. One of the retrieval mechanisms is words, which brings images to the conscious minds. Señor Gamboa speaks of Fernando Szyszlo's lyrical abstractions he gives us a mechanism for image retrieval. A culture is based on words, as the Arabs had 3000 words for camel equipment and as we have thousands for automobiles, what has no name disappears from culture. Written criticism may concern itself with social problems or anything else, but inasmuch as it is art criticism, its role is to be the sense of touch. That is to say, descriptive for the consciousness. Art history is useful because it liberates us from the tyranny of the momentary.

We forget the important role of the ten Latin American delegates, including Orozco, Siqueiros and Tamayo, to the first American Artists Congress in New York in 1936 when Orozco and Julia Codesido were on the platform. The United States has been the recipient, not the source of cultural imperialism. The New York School has been the synthesis of many influences, but especially it is the only direct heir of the Mexican renaissance. If we fail to recognize our fathers, it does not mean that you must fail to recognize your children. [aplausos]

Eso no quería decir de ninguna manera que yo no admirara la pintura expresionista abstracta, siempre me he declarado admirador de las grandes figuras del arte norteamericano como Jackson Pollock, o de Kooning, o Franz Kline, o Motherwell, o el mismo Adja Yunkers, y muchos otros. También he demostrado y he escrito y lo he dicho en infinidad de conferencias, que entiendo perfectamente el pop norteamericano y reconozco a figuras tan importantes como Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns o Oldenburg. Eso no quiere decir que por el hecho de que yo sea un admirador de ellos, deba yo de ser un seguidor de lo que ellos me están proponiendo por el solo hecho de ellos funcionar dentro de una metrópoli que estará exportando su arte a través de revistas, de publicaciones que tienen una proyección internacional.

Bueno, yo hablo en portugués. Hoy en la mañana Rodrigo Saavedra habló también de un terrorismo de la crítica a propósito de Marta Traba. [risas] Quisiera señalar que a partir de los años 60 ocurre lo que un crítico brasileño denomina arte posmoderno, es decir, que el periodo del arte moderno ya habría sido superado y que estaríamos viviendo entonces una situación de arte posmoderno. La característica de este momento sería precisamente un cambio continuo de posiciones. En ese sentido, no solo un crítico puede ser también un artista, sino que el artista también puede ser un crítico.

En cierto sentido, ese es el carácter, por ejemplo, del arte conceptual, en el sentido de que el arte conceptual hoy toma como tema de su reflexión el propio arte, por lo tanto tiene un carácter topológico. Esto evidentemente lleva a la afirmación que se hizo ayer, de que tanto críticos como artistas pueden proponer sus propios modelos.

En nuestro caso, yo podría explicar ese modelo a partir de, como decía ayer, nuestro arte constructivo, bien caracterizado en los años 50. Aquí también podría hacerse una referencia al hablar de Octavio Paz. Él menciona la ausencia de un pensamiento crítico en América Latina, y yo creo que, por lo menos en Brasil, hubo un esfuerzo [ininteligible 00:17:08] exitoso de teorización de un pensamiento crítico, y ese fue un movimiento concreto brasileño.

Está claro que los posibles orígenes de ese pensamiento crítico pueden encontrarse en Europa, pero el simple hecho de que haya persistido, de que haya pasado por un proceso de nacionalización y que [ininteligible 00:17:36], incluso, haya adquirido una característica más orgánica —por ejemplo, con el tropicalismo— muestra que realmente tuvo cierta eficacia.

Quisiera expresar un punto de vista que realmente no se ha planteado. Soy historiador del arte. La historia del arte ha estudiado la forma principal de crítica de arte, que es la realizada por los propios artistas en su obra. El arte creativo es un diálogo crítico con sus fuentes y con sus descendientes previstos, es decir, se podría decir que Otero es un crítico primordial de Mondrian. La crítica de arte en palabras siempre es secundaria, lo cual no quiere decir que sea irrelevante. Investigaciones en la Universidad de Rochester han descubierto que el cerebro tiene lo que llaman una capacidad infinita para iniciar imágenes visuales. El inicio se da en el inconsciente. Uno de los mecanismos de recuperación es el lenguaje, que lleva las imágenes a la mente consciente. El señor Gamboa habla de las abstracciones líricas de Fernando Szyszlo; él nos ofrece un mecanismo para la recuperación de imágenes. Una cultura se basa en las palabras, como los árabes que tenían 3000 palabras para el equipo de los camellos, o como nosotros que tenemos miles para los automóviles. Lo que no tiene nombre desaparece de la cultura. La crítica escrita puede ocuparse de problemas sociales o de cualquier otra cosa, pero en la medida en que sea crítica de arte, su papel es ser el sentido del tacto. Es decir, ser descriptiva para la conciencia. La historia del arte es útil porque nos libera de la tiranía de lo momentáneo.

Olvidamos el papel importante de los diez delegados latinoamericanos, entre ellos Orozco, Siqueiros y Tamayo, en el Primer Congreso de Artistas Americanos en Nueva York en 1936, cuando Orozco y Julia Codesido estaban en la tribuna. Estados Unidos ha sido el receptor, no la fuente, del imperialismo cultural. It is pointless to return to the question of whether the image precedes the idea, the percept the concept, or vice versa. Both processes are human, social, and artistic. It has been said that art criticism in Latin America is poor. Others have argued that it is not directed at the artist, but at the public. It is poor, certainly, and will remain so as long as there is no vigorous theory of art and art history to support it.

This was perhaps all right for abstract expressionism. I think it perhaps was better for pop art, but now, of course, since 1968 and after that with the coup in Chile, it suddenly became fashionable to be political in art criticism in North America. Many of the critics who are writing this way haven't the faintest idea of what they're dealing with. They're simply dealing with something that's in the air and they are still part of an art establishment.

I want to say a few words about the importance of art history, to the future of Latin American art. We have seen, if we look at the Latin American scene collectively and in time, the experience of exploring the various possible avenues, for both national and international Latin American art. Really, a three-quarters of a century tradition of explorations, of use, and assimilation. Sometimes in the forefront of discovery in the formal areas of art in Western society and also of innovation, a unique innovation in the social and ethnic areas of art.

This is a history of creative exploration, which is just as much a part of Latin American experience, overall experience, as its social struggles. It has left its mark in the Latin American personality and its many aspects varieties and sectors. It seems to me that it is important to know this, in order to arrive at a sense of where Latin American art is, at the moment, or if it goes ahead in the future and to know this experience in order to have an effective critical point of view. The record is really phenomenal when you go over it.

From the time of the Sindicato in Mexico, on through the developments of the first half, in the middle of the century, through the Biennial of São Paulo, in all of the countries. This record, as much as the record of the 19th century, is in danger of being lost if we do not take a systematic catalog of what is happened. I was in Venezuela a year and a half ago and I counted 80 artists, whom I felt were important to know in order to get an objective idea of what it happened in Venezuelan art, since the independence period.

When you multiply those 80 artists, by say 20 pictures that may have survived or 20 sculptures and try to incompose those in an objective study, you are completely at a loss, because you are not able to get an objective review of what these individuals have done in their time and evaluate what the contribution may have been to their time. May I just say this?

I think it is too early to say that we can have, in the Latin American area, as we have not in many other areas, a systematic art historical review or survey of everything that has happened. We have this problem in the United States, but I think what is terribly important at this point, is to begin the cataloging of our surviving works of art that represent a priceless heritage for the modern Latin American mind and the future of its art.

What exactly is distinctively Latin American about contemporary art created by Latin American artists? Is it a question of content, style, or technique? What do the works appearing in the Plural exhibit, for example, have in common?. Is there anyone who will address themself after that question?

That is to say, a geometric artist in New York, a New Yorker or a gringo in general, creates a work. A Latin American artist, sooner or later—let's not talk about the problem of sequence right now—creates another work with very similar formal characteristics. One work and another have a different meaning, in the same way that Don Quixote, written by Pierre Menard, although word for word the same as that written by Cervantes de Saavedra, is not the Don Quixote written by Cervantes de Saavedra.

The presence of, say, Aztec sculpture in Henry Moore's work is something that enriches Henry Moore's work. It is an important fact that marks the development of sculpture and European art in the 1930s. The presence of pre-Hispanic elements in a Mexican work does not have that meaning, if it has any other.

Clearly, the answer to the question about content is therefore no. Now, I don't think that art can be described through techniques either. I believe that the definition, for example, of contemporary art, whether literary or visual, in relation to the incorporation of techniques, also ignores the organic nature of cultures and the organic nature of the social processes in which those cultures are embedded. This discussion, for example, would have astonished sociologists or anthropologists such as Malinowski, who as early as 1944, in several books, for example, referred to this.

All literary history or art history that attempts to explain changes or modifications in sensibility in Latin America through the incorporation of literary or artistic techniques misrepresents the fact that culture, including art and literature, corresponds to organic processes of national and continental development. Now, I believe, what remains is form, the formal aspect. This is an extremely complex aspect that naturally cannot be easily developed.

There are artists who have internalized the world in which they live to such an extent that they define purely plastic rhythms in an almost abstract way, as in the case of the young Bolivian artist Zilveti.

A brief reflection prompted by Professor Smith's question and the answers. This brings to mind something I was discussing with someone yesterday afternoon, which is not a new concern of mine. In reality, it is not only possible that structuralism is a beautiful stroke of fantasy literature, but also that Latin America is a beautiful invention and perhaps nothing more than that.

Está de más volver al problema de si la imagen precede a la idea, el percepto al concepto, o al revés. Los dos procesos son humanos, sociales y artísticos. Se dijo que la crítica de arte en Latinoamérica es mala. Otros postularon que no estaba dirigida al artista, sino al público. Es mala, por cierto, y lo será mientras no exista una teoría de arte y una historia de arte vigorosa que la abastezcan.

Quizás esto estaba bien para el expresionismo abstracto. Creo que quizá era mejor para el arte pop, pero ahora, por supuesto, desde 1968 y después del golpe de Estado en Chile, de repente se puso de moda ser político en la crítica de arte en Norteamérica. Muchos de los críticos que escriben de esta manera no tienen la más mínima idea de lo que están tratando. Simplemente están tratando con algo que está en el aire y siguen formando parte del establecimiento artístico.

Quiero decir unas palabras sobre la importancia de la historia del arte para el futuro del arte latinoamericano. Si observamos la escena latinoamericana de manera colectiva y a lo largo del tiempo, hemos visto la experiencia de explorar las diversas vías posibles, tanto para el arte latinoamericano nacional como internacional. En realidad, se trata de una tradición de tres cuartos de siglo de exploraciones, de uso y de asimilación. A veces a la vanguardia del descubrimiento en las áreas formales del arte en la sociedad occidental y también de la innovación, una innovación única en las áreas sociales y étnicas del arte.

Esta es una historia de exploración creativa, que forma parte de la experiencia latinoamericana, de la experiencia general, tanto como sus luchas sociales. Ha dejado su huella en la personalidad latinoamericana y en sus múltiples aspectos, variedades y sectores. Me parece importante conocer esto para poder comprender dónde se encuentra el arte latinoamericano en este momento, o si avanzará en el futuro, y conocer esta experiencia para tener un punto de vista crítico eficaz. El registro es realmente fenomenal cuando lo revisas.

Desde la época del Sindicato en México, pasando por los acontecimientos de la primera mitad del siglo, hasta la Bienal de São Paulo, en todos los países. Este registro, al igual que el del siglo XIX, corre el riesgo de perderse si no se realiza un catálogo sistemático de lo que ha sucedido. Hace un año y medio estuve en Venezuela y conté 80 artistas que me parecieron importantes conocer para tener una idea objetiva de lo que sucedió en el arte venezolano desde el período de la independencia.

Cuando multiplicas esos 80 artistas por, digamos, 20 cuadros que pueden haber sobrevivido o 20 esculturas, e intentas incluirlos en un estudio objetivo, te quedas completamente perdido, porque no eres capaz de obtener una visión objetiva de lo que estas personas han hecho en su época y evaluar cuál puede haber sido su contribución a su tiempo. ¿Puedo decir esto?

Creo que es demasiado pronto para afirmar que en América Latina, a diferencia de lo que ocurre en muchas otras regiones, podemos disponer de una revisión o estudio sistemático de la historia del arte que abarque todo lo que ha sucedido. En Estados Unidos también tenemos este problema, pero creo que lo realmente importante en este momento es comenzar a catalogar las obras de arte que han sobrevivido y que representan un patrimonio inestimable para la mentalidad latinoamericana moderna y el futuro de su arte.

¿Qué es exactamente lo que distingue al arte contemporáneo creado por artistas latinoamericanos? ¿Es una cuestión de contenido, estilo o técnica? ¿Qué tienen en común las obras que aparecen en la exposición Plural, por ejemplo? ¿Hay alguien que se plantee esa pregunta?

Es decir, un artista geométrico en Nueva York, neoyorquino o gringo en general, hace una obra. Un artista latinoamericano antes o después, no hablemos ahorita del problema de secuencia, hace otra obra con características formales muy similares. Una obra y otra tienen un sentido diferente, de la misma manera que el Quijote, escrito por Pierre Menard, aunque palabra por palabra fuera igual al escrito por Cervantes de Saavedra, no es el Quijote escrito por Cervantes de Saavedra.

La presencia de, por decir algo, la escultura azteca en la obra de Henry Moore, es algo que enriquece la obra de Henry Moore. Es un hecho importante que marca el desarrollo de la escultura y del arte europeo en los años 30's. La presencia de elementos prehispánicos en una obra mexicana no tiene ese sentido, si no tiene otro.

Claramente la respuesta frente a los contenidos es, por lo tanto, no. Ahora, tampoco me parece que ese arte pueda ser descrito a través de técnicas. Me parece que la definición, por ejemplo, de un arte contemporáneo, literario o plástico en relación con incorporación de técnicas, también desconoce la organicidad de las culturas y la organicidad de los procesos sociales en que están insertas esas culturas. Esta discusión, por ejemplo, habría asombrado a sociólogos o antropólogos como a Malinowski, que ya en 1944, en varios libros, por ejemplo, se referían a eso.

Toda la historia literaria o la historia del arte que trata de explicar los cambios o las modificaciones de la sensibilidad en América Latina a través de incorporación de técnicas literarias o plásticas, falsea precisamente que la cultura, también la plástica y la literaria, corresponde a procesos orgánicos de desarrollos nacionales y continentales. Ahora, creo yo, va quedando lo de forma, el aspecto forma. Este es un aspecto sumamente complejo que naturalmente no puede ser desarrollado fácilmente.

Hay artistas que han interiorizado tanto, por ejemplo, el mundo en el cual ellos viven que, por ejemplo, definiendo casi abstractamente unos puros ritmos plásticos, como en el artista boliviano, en el joven artista boliviano, Zilveti.

Una mínima y pequeña reflexión surgida de la pregunta del profesor Smith y de las respuestas. Esto me trae a la cabeza algo que comentaba con alguien ayer en la tarde y que no es una preocupación más vieja mía. En realidad no es posible que no solo el estructuralismo sea un bello trazo de literatura fantástica, sino es posible que la América Latina sea una bella invención y quizás no más que eso.

My name is Janis Palma Castroman. I am going to speak in Spanish. It seems to me that we have a little time, and yesterday something was mentioned about revolutionary art in Cuba, and I was left with a feeling of uncertainty because it seems to me that when we talk about revolutionary art in Cuba, we are not talking about a revolution in art, but rather a social revolution to which this art alludes. I don't know if I'm wrong or if this topic wasn't addressed, but my impression is that revolutionary art in Cuba means something else, it doesn't mean a revolution in art.

It might be good if someone who has visited Cuba might comment on that. Any of the panelists? I know some people do know this.

I am familiar with Cuban art and have been to Cuba relatively recently, although I am uncertain if five years is a long time for a young country. Overall, what I observed and expressed in my book, from the perspective of painting and sculpture, disappointed me because, more or less, my exact words were, "It is as good or as bad as what you see in any other city in the world. And I noticed, to my great surprise, that they were also influenced by pop art, op art, and all the forms that came from France and New York." But instead, I devoted an entire chapter of my book to Cuban poster art. Because the posters and billboards, as they say, struck me as graphic works of excellent quality.

As Susan Sontag and Dugald say, I believe, in the prologue to that magnificent book on Cuban posters, which has an advertisement by Rostgaard, which is a rose with a thorn and a drop of blood on the thorn, so that people will recognize the book. That commentator said that, in contrast to Mexican muralism, which had dreamed that the people would go to see the murals, something that in reality does not always happen, since they are located in very specific buildings, the idea of multiplying street advertisements, flyers, which are stuck on walls and corners, or which cover entire 20-story buildings, with images of Martí or Che Guevara or Camilo Cienfuegos, are, for those coming from outside a city empty of commercial advertising, an absolutely indispensable element, urbanistically speaking, for mobilizing those enormous dead surfaces in our cities.

So I think the Cuban government had the excellent idea of not imposing restrictions. There was a moment of uncertainty, a temptation toward socialist realism just after the triumph of the revolution. They recovered and gave artists complete freedom. But the most interesting art in Cuba for me, without a doubt, is that of posters, advertisements, and billboards. These are produced in different centers that are naturally run by the centralized government, but which have such psychological finesse that the most difficult advertisements, so to speak, refer mainly to books and films that are being released. On the other hand, there is a more basic level of visual and signage or semantic understanding, as they say now, which is aimed at practical notices such as blood donation, childcare, literacy, and the major problems of the Cuban revolution. So, if I may answer with this, it seems to me that an artistic revolution is taking place there in an attempt to educate the people, which does not consist simply of painting or reproducing revolutionary themes, but of assimilating the entire level of contemporary art, including kinetic art and geometric forms. As I said yesterday, Le Parc's exhibition was a resounding success in Cuba, absolutely sensational, and by assimilating it in this way, transforming it into a work that may ultimately end up educating people artistically, which is what we all dream of.

They educated visually, but I would also like to add that the opening up of this new audience was facilitated by the destruction of certain mechanisms of the art trade that occur in capitalist societies. For example, the disappearance of private galleries, the nationalization of galleries, the possibility of purchasing paintings at very modest prices and by a very different audience than the one that generally has access to works of art. It also implied a constant concern with modifying the relationship that exists in capitalist society between the artist and his or her obligatory consumer from the elite.

With that concern no longer existing in Cuba, having been replaced by another, a way was sought to reach this entire new population that was receiving the work of art. In this same vein, importance was given to short films, the revitalization of cinema, and the search for education, visual education, through the images of cinema, of new cinema. I am not referring only to a silly education, with minimal pedagogical levels, but to a clear visual education. The importance given to graphics.

The reevaluation of the graphic arts, taking into account historical precedents. All these things seem to me to be positive, worthy of note within the Cuban process. Not really the changes, which, as far as I know, had not taken place in the art forms that clearly stem from the bourgeois revolutions. That is to say, painting, sculpture, forms that are unique. The unique piece continued to work exactly within the same guidelines that artists can work within in capitalist society. That is what I wanted to add. Thank you.

The impossible is the easiest thing. No matter what one says, it always sounds good. I would start elsewhere, with a prologue. The prologue is this. A work of art is a result, a text is a result. That is, it is produced by someone for someone. So there is a process that Saussure already studied, and that Jakobson has defined, which is that of a sender and a receiver. When we are talking about a work of art or a literary work, it depends on which part of the process we are interested in.

That is, are we interested in the problem of the sender? All these problems arise concerning the psychology of the artist, the context in which the work was created, the medium and genre prevalent at the time, and so on. Are we interested in the receiver? Once again, we see the same problems, but in a different way. We are concerned, for example, that even if the sender is very sophisticated, let's say Oswald de Andrade, not to mention that Argentine author we are all thinking of. [laughter] Since I always mention Oswald de Andrade and no one remembers, I have to say it.

That is, what is specific to Latin American literature or art? Do you mean specific from the point of view of the public or the audience, as the Anglophiles say, or from the point of view of the reader, from the point of view of the sender? In other words, the only way to approach this problem with a certain aesthetic sense would be to take a text X, Huasipungo was suggested to me the other day, and take another text X, No One Writes to the Colonel, and examine the systems to which they correspond. Of course, that can be done. If I had a little more time, I would try to do it.

No sé si yo estoy equivocada o si es que no se tocó este tema, pero mi impresión es que arte revolucionario en Cuba quiere decir otra cosa, no quiere decir una revolución en el arte.

Sería bueno que alguien que haya visitado Cuba comentara al respecto. ¿Algún miembro del panel? Sé que algunas personas lo saben.

Yo conozco el arte cubano y estado en Cuba hace relativamente poco, no sé si cinco años es mucho para un país joven. En general, lo que vi y lo dije en mi libro, desde el punto de vista pintura y escultura, me decepcionó porque, más o menos, palabras textuales decía, "Es tan bueno o tan malo como lo que se ve en cualquier otra ciudad del mundo. Y noté, con gran sorpresa, que también estaban influídos por el pop art, por el op art, por todas las formas que venían de Francia y de Nueva York". Pero en cambio, abusivamente dediqué un capítulo de mi libro al afichismo cubano. Porque los afiches y los pósters y las vallas, como dicen ellos, me parecieron obras gráficas de excelente calidad.

Como dice Susan Sontag y Dugald, creo, en el prólogo de ese magnífico libro sobre los afiches cubanos, que tiene un aviso de Rostgaard, que es una rosa con una espina y en la espina una gota de sangre, para que reconozcan el libro. Decía ese comentarista que, en contraposición del muralismo mexicano, que había soñado con que el pueblo fuera a ver los murales, cosa que en la realidad no ocurre siempre, puesto que están localizados en edificios muy particulares, la idea de la multiplicación del aviso callejero, volandero, que se pega en las paredes y en las esquinas, o que cubre edificios enteros de 20 pisos, con las imágenes de Martí o del Che Guevara o de Camilo Cienfuegos, resultan, para el que viene de afuera en una ciudad vacía de propaganda comercial, el elemento absolutamente indispensable, urbanísticamente hablando, para movilizar esas enormes superficies muertas de nuestras ciudades.

De manera que me parece que el gobierno cubano tuvo la excelente idea de no limitar. Hubo un momento de flotación, una tentación de realismo socialista apenas pasado el triunfo de la revolución. Se recuperaron y dejaron entera libertad a los artistas. Pero el arte más interesante de Cuba para mí, sin duda, es el de los afiches, el de los avisos, el de las vallas. Esos se producen en distintos centros que están naturalmente dirigidos por el gobierno centralizado, pero los cuales, hay tanta finura psicológica que los avisos más difíciles, digamos, entre comillas, se refieren principalmente a libros, a películas que se estrenan. En cambio hay un nivel más elemental de comprensión plástico y de señalización o semántico, como se dice ahora, que está dirigido a los avisos prácticos como la donación de sangre, el cuidado de los niños, la alfabetización y los problemas mayores de la revolución cubana. De manera que si con esto contesto, me parece que se cumple allí una revolución artística para tratar de educar al pueblo, que no consiste simplemente en pintar o en reproducir temas revolucionarios, sino en asimilarse todo el nivel de la plástica contemporánea, incluyendo el cinetismo y las formas geométricas. Como dije ayer, la exposición de Le Parc tuvo un éxito clamoroso en Cuba, absolutamente sensacional y asimilándolo así, transformándolo en una obra que quizá a la larga termine por educar a la gente plásticamente, que es lo que todos soñamos.

Educaban visualmente, pero también a esto lo que quiero añadir, es que la apertura de esa nueva audiencia estaba facilitada por la destrucción de ciertos mecanismos del comercio del arte, que ocurre en las sociedades capitalistas. Por ejemplo, la desaparición de las galerías privadas, la nacionalización de las galerías, la posibilidad de que los cuadros se compraran por cuotas muy módicas y por un público muy diferente al que generalmente puede tener acceso a la obra de arte. Implicaba también una preocupación constante de modificar el cuadro de relaciones que existe en la sociedad capitalista, entre el artista y su obligatorio consumidor de la élite.

No existiendo ya esa preocupación en Cuba, habiendo sido sustituida por otra, se buscó el modo de acceder a toda esta nueva población que recibía la obra de arte y en este mismo sentido, la importancia que se le dio al cortometraje, el saneamiento del cine, buscar a través de las imágenes del cine, del nuevo cine una educación, una educación visual. No me refiero solamente a una tonta educación, así de niveles pedagógicos ínfimos, si no a una clara educación visual. La importancia que se le dio a la gráfica.

La reevaluación de la gráfica, teniendo en cuenta antecedentes. Todas estas cosas me parecen a mí, que son las positivas, las dignas de señalar dentro del proceso cubano. No realmente los cambios, que hasta donde yo lo conocí, no se habían operado en las formas de arte que vienen evidentemente de las revoluciones burguesas. Es decir, es pintura, escultura, las formas así como únicas. La pieza única seguía trabajando exactamente, dentro de las mismas pautas en que pueden trabajar los artistas en la sociedad capitalista. Esto es lo que quería añadir. Gracias.

Lo imposible es lo más fácil. No importa lo que uno diga, siempre queda bien. Yo empezaría por otro lado, con un prólogo. El prólogo es este. Una obra de arte, es un resultado, un texto es un resultado. Es decir, es producido por alguien para alguien. De manera que hay un proceso que ya estudió Saussure, y que Jakobson ha definido, que es el de un emisor y un receptor. Cuando estamos hablando de la obra de arte o de la obra literaria, depende de qué parte del proceso es la que nos interesa.

Es decir, ¿estamos interesados en el problema del emisor? Vienen todos estos problemas sobre la psicología del artista, sobre el contexto en que fue creada la obra, sobre el medio y género prevaleciente en ese momento, etcétera. ¿Estamos interesados en el receptor? Otra vez volvemos a ver los mismos problemas, pero de otra manera. Nos preocupa, por ejemplo, que aunque el emisor sea muy sofisticado, digamos Oswald de Andrade, para no mencionar aquel autor argentino que estamos todos pensando. [risas] Como yo menciono siempre a Oswald de Andrade y nadie se acuerda, tengo que decirlo.

Es decir, ¿qué es lo específico de la literatura o del arte latinoamericanos? ¿Específico se refiere usted, del punto de vista del público o de la audiencia como dicen los anglófilos, o del punto de vista del lector, del punto de vista del emisor? Es decir, la única manera de encarar este problema con cierto sentido estético, sería tomar un texto equis, Huasipungo me proponían el otro día, y tomar otro texto X, El coronel no tiene quien le escriba, y examinar los sistemas a los que corresponden. Naturalmente eso se puede hacer. Si a mí me dieran un poquito más de tiempo, intentaría hacerlo.

That doesn't mean that I believe in that advanced stuff, that at the end of each of my articles I take a little jab at conceptual art, at ecological art, with those forms that Marta, going even further than I do, calls outright “clowning around.”

When in 1968 the situation in Mexico, the political situation, was violent and terribly difficult, it was the group of painters who were then gathered in what they called the independent salon. Almost all of them were painters who were distancing themselves, that is, without exception, all of them were painters who had distanced themselves from the last traces of the old Mexican school and were much more closely linked to an international milieu. Among them, Felguérez and others had a more rebellious, violent, and stronger response to the government's positions at that time.

Meanwhile, our old painters, traditionally left-wing, kept their mouths shut. This anecdote alone is important in reaffirming and reinforcing what Felguérez said, which ties in with something I think and perhaps pointed out yesterday. Yes, this revolutionary art in every sense must exist, and it does exist. The problem is identifying with art that necessarily contains indigenous elements. That is what would be truly dangerous.

I believe that the avant-garde has been, to a certain extent—I would say more precisely, up to surrealism within the modern movement—of absolute and extreme importance for the production of the expressive forms of the 20th century. When I refer to the avant-garde, to the terrorism of the avant-garde, and to the avant-garde as clowning around. Yes, of course, I believe that most of the current avant-garde movements are clowning around. I am thinking of another qualification, another definition of the avant-garde...

No quiere decir que yo crea en eso avanzado, que al final de cada uno de mis artículos hago una pequeña rotura de lanzas contra el arte conceptual, contra el arte ecológico, con esas formas que Marta, yendo más exageradamente que yo, llama directamente, "Payasadas".

Cuando en 1968 la situación en México, la situación política, fue violenta y terriblemente difícil, fue el grupo de pintores que entonces estaban reunidos en lo que llamaban salón independiente. Casi todos ellos pintores que se alejaban, es decir, sin excepción, todos ellos pintores alejados de los últimos trazos de la vieja escuela mexicana y pintores mucho más ligados con un medio internacional, los que tuvieron, y entre ellos Felguérez, los que tuvieron una respuesta más contestataria, más violenta y más fuerte a las posturas gobernistas en ese momento.

Mientras nuestros viejos pintores, tradicionalmente de izquierda, no abrían la boca. Esta sola anécdota es importante para reafirmar, reforzar lo que decía Felguérez y que se liga con algo que yo pienso y quizás apunté ayer. Sí, este arte revolucionario en todo sentido debe existir, existe. El problema es que hacer la identificación con un arte que contenga necesariamente elementos autóctonos. Esto es lo que sería realmente peligroso.

Yo creo que la vanguardia ha sido hasta cierto punto, diría más exactamente hasta el surrealismo dentro del movimiento moderno de una absoluta extrema importancia para la producción de las formas expresivas del siglo 20. For one thing, there, as here, one was struck by the shimmering dialectics at work between the universal and the regional, between the general and the individual, between the cultural and the idiosyncratic. If Marx and other modern analysts of society have discovered the contradictions which set in motion the forces of history, so also the artists of the Hirshhorn, like their confreres elsewhere, had perceived with astonishing accuracy the contradictions between substance and form on which the whole edifice of contemporary artistic expression has been erected. 

The second way in which the visit to the Hirshhorn foreshadowed our present concerns relates to the combinations of art and literature that make up the creative language of Latin America today. 

Yet, if we are to advance our understanding of what Latin American art and literature are asserting in the latter half of the 20th century, it is clear that we must, in a paradoxical transposition of senses, look carefully at what writers portray and listen attentively to what painters and sculptors may declare through their respective media. 

And then, to expand upon this suggestion, we turned to Alejandro Otero for Caracas, in Caracas, Venezuela, and Alejandro was generous enough to provide us with a full-scale retrospective exhibition. I feel that in some fashion, we've not represented Alejandro as well as we should, because the late monumental sculpture, which he has been doing in the last few years, which is impossible to transport, is, to this viewer, among the most brilliant kinetic sculpture being produced in the hemisphere. 

En primer lugar, tanto allí como aquí, uno quedaba impresionado por la brillante dialéctica entre lo universal y lo regional, entre lo general y lo individual, entre lo cultural y lo idiosincrático. Si Marx y otros analistas modernos de la sociedad han descubierto las contradicciones que ponen en movimiento las fuerzas de la historia, también los artistas del Hirshhorn, como sus colegas de otros lugares, han percibido con asombrosa precisión las contradicciones entre el fondo y la forma sobre las que se ha erigido todo el edificio de la expresión artística contemporánea.

La segunda forma en que la visita al Hirshhorn prefiguró nuestras preocupaciones actuales está relacionada con las combinaciones de arte y literatura que conforman el lenguaje creativo de la América Latina de hoy.

Sin embargo, si queremos avanzar en nuestra comprensión de lo que el arte y la literatura latinoamericanos están afirmando en la segunda mitad del siglo XX, está claro que debemos, en una paradójica transposición de sentidos, mirar con atención lo que los escritores retratan y escuchar con atención lo que los pintores y escultores pueden declarar a través de sus respectivos medios.

Y luego, para ampliar esta sugerencia, nos dirigimos a Alejandro Otero para Caracas, en Caracas, Venezuela, y Alejandro tuvo la generosidad de ofrecernos una exposición retrospectiva a gran escala. The circumstances in which Latin American intellectuals function frequently begin and end with risks, risks which make the discovery of self problematic, but we share that with them too, in one form or another. We share other things, such questions as "Who am I?", versus "Who are we?". The weing and eyeing you will be hearing in the next three days. Put in terms of the academy, whether Art for Art's Sake and the ultra-structuralist analysis and criticism of the present belong to a syndrome which drives out of artworks their content?

These matters will be taken up by our colleagues on the panel. To introduce the art panellists, Professor Damian Bayan will speak next. We first heard about Damian Bayon as a specialist in 16th-century Castilian architecture. We knew that his background had included the study of architecture in Buenos Aires, that he had years of study at the University of Paris. During his time here, Professor Bayon has, in a very unique way, brought to our students a broadened view of contemporary expression in contemporary life. I's with great pleasure, Damian, that I ask you to introduce the art panellists.

Founded and directed by Octavio Paz, Plural was born to restore the spirit of criticism and reintroduce the rational word in an age of violence and intolerance. As our director says, we are against the deaf monologue and the criteria of rhetoric. In its 50 months of existence, Plural has fought for the free circulation of ideas. We do not know to what extent we have achieved this purpose, but we have considered that our moral obligation is and should be to urgently restore the dialogue between intellectuals and artists and the Latin American public, and that the plurality of their ideas be reflected in its pages.

Next to my side, Dore Ashton, undoubtedly for me, and it's not because she's there, the best American critic of her generation. I'm very pleased that she was able to come, and we are very honored for that reason. She published recently many important books that my students have been using. One is called The New York School, another one is called Readings on Modern Art, and the most recent, A Joseph Cornell album. The wonderful author of Little Boxes, who was a favorite of mine since the beginnings of my going to New York and the Museum of Modern Art there.

Last but not least, oh no, not least, Marta Traba, my friend and compatriot from Argentina, more international still perhaps than any one of us because she has lived for many years in Bogota where actually she changed Colombia. She changed Colombia in a bothered country, at least from an artistic point of view, because people, not only the curators of the museums today and her own generation, painters like Obregón, but the new generation, younger people like Luis Caballero and Mercedes Hoyos, all these people still swear upon their hearts for Marta Traba.

They can die like brave soldiers in the battle of art criticism, and always is Marta Traba the Guadalupe that they—

I take it as a compliment, Marta. Marta has produced so many books that I'm not going to be able to remember. Half of the stacks of our library are full of courses, manuscripts, and all kinds of books by Marta. Unfortunately, the most recent ones we don't have. The one that I had that you gave me in Caracas last year was stolen, so that means that is a very precious object. One of his last books is Dos Decadas Vulnerables del Arte de Latinoamerica. She promised at that time another one as she arrived so late I didn't have the time to ask to her if she produced that new volume and we are hoping that she did.

Thank you very much, Dr. Ellison. Just one more word about our third day procedure. That panel will be for those two panels will be chaired by Dory Ashton. Her co-panelists are persons who we've asked to represent the artists of Mexico and the collections at the university. Mr. Fernando Gamboa, the very distinguished director of the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City, who done such a great deal to bring contemporary Mexican art to other parts of the world.

The essay is an elegant expression of distaste for self-conscious and contrived use of local color. Shakespeare, Borges said, would have been shocked if his English public had attempted to limit him to British themes. He also remembered that Racine went all the way back to the Greeks and said that he didn't think Racine would have liked to have been limited to French themes. He said that Muhammad in the Koran didn't have to mention camels to know that he was an Arab.

I think probably that article by Borges in 1941, after all, must have been in response to local pressures for a national art. Pressures which alas have mounted rather than diminished in recent years. He clearly felt that the motifs of gauchos and pampas were rather constraining for a true poet. He spoke of, quote, nationalists who want to limit the poetic exercise of this Argentine mind to a few pure poor local subjects, as if we Argentines could only speak of shores and ranches and not of the universe.

He also insists in that article and this is a quote our patrimony is the universe. Then not too long ago, I read an interview with Borges in which he reiterated those views and he warned of the inherent dangers of what he called the simulacra of the Consciencia latinoamericana. I'm going to stop there and wait.

Las circunstancias en las que se desempeñan los intelectuales latinoamericanos con frecuencia comienzan y terminan con riesgos, riesgos que hacen problemático el descubrimiento de sí mismos, pero eso también lo compartimos con ellos, de una forma u otra. Compartimos otras cosas, preguntas como "¿Quién soy yo?", frente a "¿Quiénes somos nosotros?". Esto se escucharán en los próximos tres días. Dicho en términos académicos, si el arte por el hecho del arte y el análisis y la crítica ultraestructuralistas del presente a un síndrome que expulsa de las obras de arte su contenido.

De estas cuestiones se ocuparán nuestros colegas del panel. Para presentar a los panelistas de arte, intervendrá a continuación el profesor Damián Bayón. La primera vez que oímos hablar de Damián Bayón fue como especialista en arquitectura castellana del siglo XVI. Sabíamos que su formación había incluido el estudio de la arquitectura en Buenos Aires, que había estudiado durante años en la Universidad de París. Durante su estancia aquí, el profesor Bayón ha aportado a nuestros estudiantes, de una manera muy singular, una visión ampliada de la expresión contemporánea en la vida contemporánea. Es un gran placer, Damian, pedirte que presentes a los panelistas del arte.

Fundada y dirigida por Octavio Paz, Plural nació para restaurar el espíritu de la crítica y reintroducir la palabra racional en una época en la que impera la violencia y la intolerancia. Como dice nuestro director, estamos en contra del sordo monólogo y del criterio de la retórica. En sus 50 meses de existencia, Plural ha pugnado por la libre circulación de las ideas. No sabemos hasta qué punto hemos logrado este propósito, pero hemos considerado que nuestra obligación moral es y debe ser la de restaurar con urgencia el diálogo entre intelectuales y artistas y el público latinoamericano, y que la pluralidad de sus ideas sea reflejadas en sus páginas.

A mi lado, Dore Ashton, sin duda para mí, y no es porque esté ella, la mejor crítica norteamericana de su generación. Me alegro mucho de que haya podido venir, y nos sentimos muy honrados por ese razón. Recientemente ha publicado muchos libros importantes que mis alumnos han estado utilizando. Uno se titula The New York School, otro Readings on Modern Art, y el más reciente, A Joseph Cornell album. El maravilloso autor de Little Boxes, que fue uno de mis favoritos desde que empecé a ir a Nueva York y al Museo de arte moderno de allí.

Por último, pero no por ello menos importante, Marta Traba, mi amiga y compatriota de Argentina, quizás más internacional todavía que cualquiera de nosotros porque ha vivido durante muchos años en Bogotá, donde en realidad cambió Colombia. Cambió a Colombia en un país molesto, por lo menos desde el punto de vista artístico, porque la gente, no sólo los curadores de los museos de hoy y su propia generación, pintores como Obregón, sino la nueva generación, gente más joven como Luis Caballero y Mercedes Hoyos, toda esta gente todavía jura de corazón por Marta Traba.

Pueden morir como valientes soldados en la batalla de la crítica de arte, y siempre es Marta Traba la Guadalupe que...

Me lo tomo como un cumplido, Marta. Marta ha producido tantos libros que no voy a ser capaz de recordarlos. La mitad de los anaqueles de nuestra biblioteca están llenos de cursos, manuscritos y todo tipo de libros de Marta. Por desgracia, los más recientes no los tenemos. El que yo tenía y que me regaló en Caracas el año pasado fue robado, por lo que se trata de un objeto muy preciado. Uno de sus últimos libros es Dos décadas vulnerables del arte de Latinoamérica. Ella prometió en ese momento otro, como llegó tan tarde no tuve tiempo de preguntarle si había producido ese nuevo volumen y esperamos que así sea.

Muchas gracias, Dr. Ellison. Sólo unas palabras más sobre nuestro procedimiento del tercer día. Esos dos paneles estarán presididos por Dory Ashton. Sus co-panelistas son personas a quienes hemos pedido que representen a los artistas de México y las colecciones de la universidad. El Sr. Fernando Gamboa, el muy distinguido director del Museo de Arte Moderno de Ciudad de México, que tanto ha hecho por llevar el arte mexicano contemporáneo a otras partes del mundo.

El ensayo es una elegante expresión de desagrado por el uso autoconsciente y artificioso del color local. Shakespeare, dijo Borges, se habría escandalizado si su público inglés hubiera intentado limitarle a temas británicos. También recordó que Racine se remontaba hasta los griegos y dijo que no creía que a Racine le hubiera gustado que le limitaran a temas franceses. Dijo que a Mahoma en el Corán no le hacía falta mencionar los camellos para saber que era árabe.

Pienso que probablemente aquel artículo de Borges en 1941, después de todo, debió de ser en respuesta a las presiones locales en favor de un arte nacional. Presiones que, por desgracia, han aumentado en lugar de disminuir en los últimos años. Él sentía claramente que los temas de los gauchos y las pampas eran bastante restrictivos para un poeta verdadera. Hablaba, entre comillas, de nacionalistas que quieren limitar el ejercicio poético de esta mente argentina a unos pocos temas puramente locales y pobres, como si los argentinos sólo pudiéramos hablar de las costas y los ranchos y no del universo.

También insiste en ese artículo y esto es una cita 'nuestro patrimonio es el universo.' Luego, no hace mucho, leí una entrevista con Borges en la que reiteraba esas opiniones y advertía de los peligros inherentes a lo que él llamaba el simulacro de la conciencia latinoamericana. Voy a detenerme ahí y esperar.

My arrival in New York was during the time of the great boom of North American abstract expressionism. It was assumed that the roads of figuration were definitively closed. All of us artists who worked in a figurative stage, some clueless Latin Americans thought, including those of us who worked in figuration were just a kind of kindergarten to reach the doctorate in painting, which was abstractionism.

At that time I even wrote a letter to the Museum of Modern Art addressed to Alfred Barr, and it has even been published in some catalogs that have been made on Latin American painting at the Guggenheim Museum and elsewhere, in which I expressed my attitude against those Latin American artists who, in such a regrettable way, were making a colonial art, because it was a colonialist art, in order to convince the galleries to open their doors to them.

Although the question, today's theme, is directed exclusively to those present, its answer requires, in my opinion, a reference to the past. After the immobility of colonial art, Latin American painting appears to be animated by a dynamic impulse. Slow at first, accelerated in recent years. Exonerated from colonial dependence, Latin American painting gropes in the darkness of our own being, searching almost blindly to find and translate our identity.

The fundamental term of this problem, identity, is however prior to painting and paradoxically inseparable from it. Latin America is more a task than an achievement. A trance of being rather than an identity. The first term of our problem is, therefore, yet to define itself. The difficulty faced by Latin American painting is thus extraordinary, but its potential virtue is of the same measure as its real difficulty.

If Paris or New York appeared as exemplary, each of our countries waited irremovably and silently demanding in the well of conscience. The terms of the dilemma have, however, been formative. The history of Latin American painting is that of this dramatic back-and-forth, which is not aesthetic or even moral, but ontological at bottom.

Since the commitment to each of our countries is inescapable, painters came to it by breaking down the image, carrying materials from everywhere, clarifying our contradiction and forming ourselves precisely because of it. The new Latin American painting has been constituted, therefore, until recently, by the sum of its opposites. In recent years, however, authenticity has gained irreversible ground.

At this point, in order to avoid confusion, it is convenient to evaluate the limits of the indigenisms of the 1930s. Primitive, often honest and ambitious at the same time, indigenism tried to substitute quality for theme with varying degrees of innocence. It led visual reality, the only dimension in which it operated, to a passadist or static fixation in which a vague social sentiment was combined with folkloric ornament.

More important as an awareness than as a pictorial school, indigenism inevitably castrated its thematic material, enclosing it within an external representativism lacking in irradiation, devoid of magic. This false solution tends to reappear at times, encouraged and used as in the 1930s by political rhetoric.

The real solution to this impasse, a solution as far removed from the recipes of avant-garde academism as traditional indigenism, emerged in the approaches elaborated by some significant Latin American artists. Among these artists I mention only Rufino Tamayo, although there are many others. They overcame representational formalism through the experimental creation of a new language.

This new language learns as content the reality of the country, not only its external image. It uses the concepts of contemporary plastic art to dynamize this content. The result is a set of works that instrument its rooting in its own in a rigorously plastic, free, and at the same time aesthetically valid way. This is an art exonerated from pasadist subjection, liberated from Western colonialism and simultaneously responsible for the Latin American reality.

Paintings that translate and transfigure values, not feelings. Paintings that are experimental and not predetermined by a socio-folklore program. Self-critical and not self-condolent. Of which these artists reveals for the first time our creative originality and, at the same time, our invisible universe. Other painters and sculptors, supported by their creative impulse, I cite only one work, that of Edgar Negret, currently at the university, now use the formal approaches provided by the so-called international art.

Whether the metropolis was located in the Greece of Pericles, in the Rome of the Empire, in the Italy of the Renaissance, in the France of the 21st and 20th centuries, or finally in New York, since the 1950s. The provincial artist, the marginal artist always seemed to be in a colonial situation, politically, socially and culturally imposed from the capitals. In pre-Columbian times, Andean artists proposed certain forms, certain techniques to express them, certain results, an art that was obviously autonomous.

This fact affects the deepest roots of this people and resulted in the total breakdown of a tradition of indigenous art that had lasted from 800 B.C. to the fifteenth century. During the colony, the indigenous painters managed to create a painting in spite of the Spaniards that was clandestinely their own. From the concept of volume, which unlike the model was almost nonexistent, to the ornamentation that linked them subterraneously with the last Inca art, the Queros, tapestries, etcetera.

What I find disturbing is the fact that with the political independence from Spain and the birth of the republic is that art in Peru becomes, as is the case, I believe, in all of Latin America, a totally colonial art. It disappears not only all capacity, but all intention of producing anything other than poor, cheap and docile imitations of the art that was produced in Europe.

These were aggravated, moreover, by the slowness of communications, which meant that these imitations were produced up to half a century late. I believe that this situation was repeated throughout the area, but the fact that impressionism reached the pictorial environment of Lima in the second decade of the twentieth century is an illustrative example. Ultimately, there are only two paths left for the Latin American artist.

One is to integrate oneself in the problems, to identify oneself in the searches, the concerns, the experiments. In developing a valid language within the parameters in which artists work in the great capitals, formerly Paris, now New York. The other way is to stay and try, as Marta Traba has called it, to resist. Resistance to a good portion of Latin American criticism that pushes the artist, especially the young ones, to be up to date, that proposes imported models and encourages them when they obey it.

First, the chaos that we perceive from afar in those who are the guiding centers of art and that returns the marginal artist to an exploration that takes him more inward than outward. Second, this confusion and dissolution of models and points of reference in so-called Western painting has brought a consequent contestation of what is understood by painting or art in general.

That makes it difficult, on the one hand, to propose as a pattern a trend that is known to be fleeting beforehand, and on the other, that if everything is allowed, the colonizing art critics, who used to give indications according to those models, today find themselves orphaned of directives and have adopted, in most cases, some very notorious for their silence or its equivalent, the denial of the possibility of making painting in the present time. Others, more healthily, have rectified their positions.

Considering that the process of modern and current art has been forged in two metropolises, first Paris and then New York, and has unconditionally served an imperialist project aimed at disqualifying cultural provinces and unifying artistic products into a deceptively homogeneous whole that tends to found a planetary culture, our artistic existence does not even pose as a probability.

It is deposited in today's generations between 20 and 30 years old, who manifest in the most energetic way their repudiation, their disgust and their absolute rejection of the liquidating project by organizing a true renaissance of drawing and engraving and returning to a figuration that implies their political and cultural reconnection with the regional media. Our societies are mostly pre-technological, agrarian and correspond to an underdeveloped economy.

That is why Latin Americans continue to be creators of visions and communicators of plastic symbols, despite the fact that such activity has been disqualified by the metropolis and its obsessive spokesmen, calling it provincial, regressive, passistic or immobile. Latin American art and resistance exist for us and fulfill an epistemological function and a political service. We artists and critics of resistance do not care at all about entering into the deceptive fabric of the cultural superstructure.

This means that the path of resistance is polysemic and does not abide by a certain program of work that leads to pre-established forms. Resistance is the aesthetic behavior that we present as an alternative to arbitrary, onanistic or destructive fashionable behaviors.

We all knew more or less how this would develop. It seems to me that the problem lurks behind everything that's said, the problem with tendentiousness and the early revolutionary Marxist critics were very well aware that any kind of programmatic prescription about how artists should be was always very suitable to power.

Not only political power on the right, but political power on the left. They kind of very clearly said that in his criticism. Even if we shift the balance to more up to date, chic and modern diction and categories, and if we talk about semiotics, polysemy and all of that, it's still the same old problem as to who is going to make programs for artists.

Mi llegada a Nueva York fue en el momento del gran auge del expresionismo abstracto norteamericano. Se suponía que los caminos de la figuración estaban definitivamente cerrados. Todos los artistas que trabajábamos en una etapa figurativa, pensaban algunos despistados latinoamericanos, incluso, los que trabajábamos en la figuración era tan solo una especie de kindergarten para llegar al doctorado en la pintura, que era el abstraccionismo.

Incluso, en esa época escribí una carta al Museo de Arte Moderno dirigida a Alfred Barr, incluso ha sido publicada en algunos catálogos que se han hecho sobre pintura latinoamericana del Museo Guggenheim y en otros lados, en el que expresé mi actitud en contra de esos artistas latinoamericanos que, en forma tan lamentable, hacían un arte colonial, porque era un arte colonialista, a fin de conmover a las galerías para que les abrieran las puertas.

Aunque la cuestión, el tema de hoy, está dirigida exclusivamente al presente, su respuesta exige, en mi parecer, una referencia al pasado. Después del inmovilismo del arte colonial virreinal, la pintura de América Latina aparece animada por un impulso dinámico. Lento al principio, acelerado en los últimos años. Exonerada de la dependencia colonial, la pintura latinoamericana tantea en la oscuridad de nuestro propio ser, buscando casi a ciegas encontrar y traducir nuestra identidad.

El término fundamental de este problema, identidad, es sin embargo previo a la pintura y paradójicamente inseparable de ella. América Latina es más un quehacer que un logro. Un trance de ser más que una identidad. El término primero de nuestro problema se halla, por consiguiente, aún por definirse él mismo. La dificultad que afronta la pintura latinoamericana es así extraordinaria, pero su virtud potencial es de la misma medida que su dificultad real.

Si Paris o Nueva York aparecieron como ejemplares, cada uno de nuestros países esperaba irremovible y silenciosamente exigente en el pozo de la conciencia. Los términos del dilema han sido, no obstante, formativos. La historia de la pintura latinoamericana es la de este dramático vaivén que no es estético y ni siquiera moral, sino en el fondo ontológico.

Puesto que el compromiso con cada uno de nuestros países es ineludible, a él acudieron los pintores desglosando la imagen, acarreando materiales de todas partes, esclareciendo nuestra contradicción y formándonos precisamente a causa de ella. La nueva pintura latinoamericana ha sido constituida, por consiguiente, hasta hace poco, por la suma de sus contrarios. Desde hace unos años, sin embargo, la autenticidad ha ganado un terreno irreversible.

Conviene evaluar en este punto, para evitar confusiones, los límites de los indigenismos de los años '30s. Primitivo, con frecuencia honesto y ambicioso al mismo tiempo, el indigenismo intentó sustituir con diverso grado de inocencia la calidad por el tema. Condujo la realidad visual, única dimensión en la que operaba, a una fijación pasadista o estática en la que un vago sentimiento social se combinaba con el ornamento folclórico.

Más importante como toma de consciencia que como escuela pictórica, el indigenismo castró irremediablemente su material temático, encerrándolo dentro de un representativismo exterior carente de irradiación, exento de magia. Esta falsa solución tiende a reaparecer por momentos, alentada y utilizada como en los años '30s por la retórica política.

La verdadera solución a este impasse, solución tan ajena a las recetas del academismo vanguardismo, como el indigenismo tradicional, surgió en los planteamientos elaborados por algunos significativos artistas latinoamericanos. Entre estos artistas cito solamente, aunque hay muchos otros, a Rufino Tamayo. Han superado el formalismo representativo mediante la creación experimental de un nuevo lenguaje.

Este nuevo idioma aprende como contenido la realidad del país, no solamente su imagen exterior. Utiliza los conceptos de la plástica contemporánea para dinamizar dicho contenido. El resultado es un conjunto de obras que instrumentan su enraizamiento en lo propio de un modo rigurosamente plástico, libre, que al mismo tiempo estéticamente válido. Este es un arte exonerado de la sujeción pasadista, liberado del colonialismo occidental y simultáneamente responsable de la realidad latinoamericana.

Pintura que traduce y transfigura valores y no sentimientos. Pintura experimental y no predeterminada por un programa sociofolclórico. Autocrítica y no autocondoliente. La de estos artistas revela por primera vez nuestra originalidad creativa y, al mismo tiempo, nuestro universo invisible. Otros pintores y escultores, respaldados por su impulso creador, cito solamente una obra, la de Edgar Negret, estos momentos en la universidad, utilizan ahora los planteamientos formales provistos por el arte llamado internacional.

Que la metrópolis estuviera situada en la Grecia de Pericles, en la Roma del Imperio, en la Italia del Renacimiento, en la Francia del siglo XXI y XX, o finalmente en Nueva York, a partir de los años '50s. El artista de provincia, el artista marginal pareció siempre una situación colonial, que política, social y culturalmente se le imponía desde las capitales. En la época precolombina los artistas andinos propusieron unas formas, unas técnicas para expresarlas, unos resultados, un arte que era obviamente autónomo.

Hecho que afecta las raíces más profundas de este pueblo y que trajo como consecuencia la quiebra total de una tradición de arte indígena que había durado desde el 800 a. C hasta el siglo XV. Durante la colonia, los pintores indígenas lograron crear una pintura a despecho de los españoles que clandestinamente era propia. Desde el concepto del volumen, que a diferencia del modelo era casi inexistente, hasta la ornamentación que los vincula subterráneamente con el último arte inca, los queros, tapices, etcétera.

Lo que encuentro inquietante es el hecho que con la independencia política de España y el nacimiento de la república es que el arte en el Perú se vuelve, como es el caso, creo, de toda América Latina, un arte totalmente colonial. Desaparece no solamente toda capacidad, sino toda intención de producir nada que no fueran pobres remedos baratos y dóciles del arte que se producía en Europa.

Agravados, además, por la lentitud de las comunicaciones, que hacía que estas imitaciones se produjeran hasta con medio siglo de atraso. Creo que esta situación se repitió en toda el área, pero el hecho de que el impresionismo llegara al ambiente pictórico de Lima en la segunda década del siglo XX es un ejemplo ilustrativo. En último término, para el artista latinoamericano no han quedado más que dos caminos.

Uno es el fundirse en los problemas, identificarse en las búsquedas, las preocupaciones, los experimentos. En desarrollar un lenguaje válido dentro de los parámetros en que trabajan los artistas en las grandes capitales, antes París, ahora Nueva York. El otro camino es quedarse y tratar, como lo ha llamado Marta Traba, de resistir. Resistencia a una buena parte de la crítica latinoamericana que empuja al artista, sobre todo a los jóvenes, a estar al día, que les propone modelos importados y que los alienta cuando la obedecen.

Primero, el caos que de lejos percibimos en los que son los centros rectores del arte y que devuelve al artista marginal a una exploración, que lo lleva más hacia dentro de sí mismo que hacia al exterior. Segundo, esta confusión y disolución de modelos y puntos de referencia en la llamada pintura occidental ha traído una consiguiente contestación de lo que se entiende por pintura o arte en general.

Que hacen difíciles, de un lado, proponer como patrón una tendencia que de antemano se sabe fugaz, y de otro, que si todo está permitido, la crítica de arte colonizante, que antes daba indicaciones de acuerdo con esos modelos, hoy se encuentra huérfana de directivas y ha adoptado, en la mayoría de los casos, algunos muy notorios por el silencio o su equivalente, la negación de la posibilidad de hacer pintura en la época actual. Otros, más saludablemente, han rectificado posiciones.

Teniendo en cuenta que el proceso del arte moderno y actual ha sido fraguado en dos metrópolis, primero París y luego Nueva York, y ha servido incondicionalmente a un proyecto imperialista destinado a descalificar las provincias culturales y a unificar los productos artísticos en un conjunto engañosamente homogéneo que tiende a fundar una cultura planetaria, nuestra existencia artística ni siquiera se plantea como una probabilidad.

Se deposita en las generaciones que tienen hoy día entre 20 y 30 años, que manifiestan del modo más enérgico su repudio, su asco y su rechazo absoluto al proyecto liquidador al organizar un verdadero renacimiento del dibujo y el grabado y regresar a una figuración que implica su reconexión política y cultural con los medios regionales. Nuestras sociedades son mayoritariamente pretecnológicas, agrarias y corresponden a una economía de subdesarrollo.

De ahí que los latinoamericanos sigan siendo creadores de visiones y comunicadores de signos plásticos, pese a que tal actividad haya sido descalificada por las metrópolis y sus voceros obsecuentes, tratándola de provinciana, regresiva, pasatista o inmovilista. El arte latinoamericano y la resistencia existe para nosotros y cumple una función epistemológica y un servicio político. A los artistas y a los críticos de la resistencia no nos importa en absoluto entrar en el tejido engañoso dela superestructura cultural.

Esto significa que la vía de la resistencia es polisémica y no acata un determinado programa de trabajo que desemboque en formas estatuidas de antemano. La resistencia es el comportamiento estético que presentamos como alternativa a los comportamientos de moda arbitrarios, onanistas o destructivos.

Todos sabíamos más o menos cómo se desarrollaría esto. Me parece que el problema acecha detrás de todo lo que se dice, el problema con la tendenciosidad y los primeros críticos marxistas revolucionarios eran muy conscientes de que cualquier tipo de prescripción programática sobre cómo deberían ser los artistas era siempre muy conveniente para el poder.

No sólo el poder político de la derecha, sino el poder político de la izquierda. Lo decían muy claramente en sus críticas. Incluso si cambiamos el equilibrio a una dicción y unas categorías más actuales, chic y modernas, y si hablamos de semiótica, polisemia y todo eso, sigue siendo el mismo viejo problema de quién va a hacer los programas para los artistas.

I believe that here I insist on what I said, or rather should insist on what I said, I believe that this discussion on these points of identity is slightly out of date, isn't it? That is to say, in Latin American painting, or let us transfer it to Latin American literature to make my point of view more evident, this problem of identity remained in the 30's, with the novel by Ciro Alegría, and Casa, etcetera.

I agree with Fernando de Szyszlo completely. I think we should perhaps change the topic of identity for something else. What is happening in the contemporary world with the visual arts and what is it that artists are expected to do? Artists, or the work of artists, have been stripped of all danger and, as far as possible, of all meaning, and have been prevented as far as possible from saying anything.

The work of artists says less and less, lacks the possibility of language and therefore lacks the possibility of influencing society. The idea is for him to be the jester, the juggler, the one who amuses society and entertains it. It seems to me that this is the problem to raise and to see if Latin Americans agree with this general project or if Latin Americans are largely against this general project.

If they are against it, then in what way do they insurrect, insubordinate themselves against that general project of liquidation of art or transformation of art into something perfectly useless for the adornment of the houses of the well-to-do? It seems to me that the problem is more centered on that than on anything else.

I thank Marta Traba, now I don't agree that conceptual art, for example, is a lot of fun. What it is for me is profoundly boring, but you can see that I have the same basic idea as she does. I would like, going back a little to what Szyszlo was saying about this obsession of ours to meet, to read you a paragraph by Umberto Eco, which I put in my book, Aventura plástica, because it seems to me quite revealing, as a man, an intelligent Italian intellectual who travels a lot to South America, sees us.

He refers specifically to Argentines, but it can be generalized. He says, "The Argentine intellectual follows with an exemplary voracity and actuality, what happens in France, Germany, Italy or the United States. And as he is aware of this form of dependence on other cultures, he continually lives in the doubt of not producing anything original and despises himself while using foreign products. In doing so, it does not realize how many original contributions he is making or is capable of making to various disciplines".

He ends by saying, “The elementary form of provincialism does not consist then in maintaining relations of dependence with other cultures, but in always elaborating the neurotic sensation of being dependent”. I find this quote from Humberto Eco very important, because I think that, as Szyszlo says, the problem, in a way, is past. We are discussing here things of 30 years ago, since I am absolutely persuaded, to give a short list, that since ancient times, what Torres García achieved, the Brazilian architecture of the 1940s, the work of Tamayo and Matta, the work of the Venezuelan and Argentinean kineticists, is perfectly original anywhere in the world. It didn't exist before.

Europeans or North Americans who want to see that kind of works and who sometimes imitate them, Europeans are imitating Venezuelans and Argentines a lot lately, have to refer to those models. We are already creators of models, but I am invading and I am becoming a panelist when I am only chairman.

I didn't want to specify insidiousness, in the end I agree with Szyszlo, the question has been overcome, that's precisely why I insist that we have an identity and that we lack the concepts to grasp it. But I say it in a sense not a priori, but a posteriori as it corresponds to art criticism, inasmuch as the artist gives us a new image of our identity and criticism lacks concepts to be able to establish to what extent a Soto or a Leparc is Latin American.

I give the floor to whoever asks for it if they continue with this plan. If not, I will add some element to relaunch the discussion. It also seems to me that we exaggerate a lot in our search for those roots. What are, finally, our roots? We are cultural mestizos and there is no remedy for that. I am very happy that we are. A person as civilized, apparently, as Julio Cortázar is a cultural mestizo. Severo Sarduy, the Cuban from Paris, is a cultural mestizo too. I say that without any pejorative sense. In English he may have it, in Spanish he does not. Why? Precisely, because in the case of Sarduy, for example, he arrives very young in Paris, practically half-formed, just beginning to transform.

We are in a world, today's world, and it is going to be more and more in the younger generations, decidedly mixed. Where are we going to get our roots from, if not from the traditional western culture mixed in the countries that have it with indigenous or pre-Columbian cultures? So this neurotic obsession, as Eco said, of believing that we are always imitating. It turns out that we have not been imitating for many years, that our great artists do not imitate, they are themselves models, Borges is a model.

No one can imagine the importance. The day I was opening a book by Michel Foucault, I saw the first page that began like this. Borges says in one line, “Now we are admitted, because when a sophisticated intellectual also like Michel Foucault quotes directly as if he said Kierkegaard or says Nietzsche”.

Borges says, "I understood that we were in that sense, we had passed that waiting time. I do not know why the plastic arts are not going to gain the same recognition as the Latin American avant-garde literature and that I return perhaps polarizing more with Marta Traba, who finally is the most unredeemed, the most dissatisfied. The others of us already seem to be a way of self-satisfaction to answer me again".

I believe that the function of the artist is extremely important and his function is to reestablish the linguistic and communicative values of language. Not to work in these kind of idiotic games that most of contemporary art has become.

They effectively speak of a Latin American art that has made contributions, such as Venezuelan kinetic art. I absolutely agree, above all in the great contribution made by Alejandro Otero to kinetic art, because we must not fail to recognize that Venezuelan kinetic art began with Alejandro Otero and not with Soto and Cruz Diez, as Denise Rene's gallery in New York has led us to believe. Alejandro Otero has remained in Venezuela all the time and has not gone to seek Denise René's backing in Paris, far from it.

So in this case I definitely believe that we can speak of a Latin American contribution to the art of the world. At the same time, I see a series of contradictions here, because I would also like to ask Dr. Bayon, with a very deep interest in his answer, if he sincerely believes that there are contributions in any of the artists he has selected to be presented in the exhibition that is here. I believe that the exhibition selected, with very few exceptions, among which I would count Fernando de Szyszlo, Vicente Rojo, Toledo.

I think that, at this point, instead of trying to find an identity, I'm going to recognize that many Latin American artists have actually contributed as much as they have anywhere else. For instance, Cuevas just mentioned Otero, and Otero began to work towards certain things in the 40s when many people were still struggling with the early periods of abstraction.

Consequently, I would recognize him too as a source for kineticism. He was in Paris at the time when Soto went over, so consequently, all of this developed. When Vasarely began working on these terms, when Agam began working on these terms, and Burri, the Venezuelans were already doing it. I think it's time we recognize that a lot of things did come from Latin American artists.

Another thing I'd like to say is that, for instance, when talks about resistance to cultural forces, and mostly I think that one of the problems has been a lot of resistance towards the importation in Latin America of abstract expressionism. It's very difficult to avoid foreign influences because they always come from everywhere. One of the things that I think is important to realize is not so much what the artists are doing as resistance, but when they're doing it.

You might take somebody like, what's his name? Santiago Cárdenas, for instance, who worked in the United States for eight years. Of course, he had the influences of the people with whom he came into contact, Alex Katz and several others. But what he's doing now has nothing to do with pop art, has nothing to do with what the North Americans were doing. He actually did manage to develop his own work and I think this exists much more than one realizes.

For instance, people like Negret and Ramirez were working in New York at a time when abstract expressionism was high, pop art and optical art. What they did was something that, of course, had taken from many sources. But they consequently went back to Colombia and whatever they did was against the current and we must take into consideration the chronology, the time when they were developing these things. Consequently, I don't think we can really talk in terms of, say, cultural imperialism, because they have to get their sources from somewhere.

I am going to take advantage of the fact that Szyszlo spoke about literature to sneak into this art panel. My total ignorance of the subject justifies me. Since I fear that the conversations that follow this afternoon and tomorrow will continue with a certain kind of confusion, I would almost say of vocabulary, it seems appropriate to clarify a problem.

I think what the Uruguayan master Carlos Vazquez Ferreira called taking the complementary for contradictory is happening here. That is to say, we talk on the one hand about the recognition of Hispanic American art in the great metropolises, Paris or New York. We talk as if it were the same thing about the authenticity of Hispano-American art, we talk as if it were the same thing about the search for the identity of the Latin American creator or artist, and we talk about the same thing, about organizing cultural fronts to unify the activity of Hispano-American artists.

There is an anecdote about Borges that he has told many times. Referring to the publication of our first essays, he said that 33 copies had been sold over several years. 33 copies, he was very happy. He says, “Why I can imagine 33 readers, but now that 100,000 are sold, I have lost all interest”. Because how can I imagine 100,000 readers? So from a strictly individual point of view, the artist who creates or who paints, who writes or who composes music for recognition is a man who has a fairly advanced degree of the neurosis known as narcissism.

All these problems, which are very interesting from the pathological point of view, have nothing to do with art criticism or criticism of anything. I say again, they have to do with the problems one has at a cocktail party when one meets one of these big super-inflated egos. There are also people who are so modest that they insist all the time that one should not read their books, that when they find one of their books in one's house they throw them away, that they refuse to sign autographs and that naturally they never attend one of these congresses.

Yo creo que aquí insisto en lo que dije, o debo insistir en lo que dije, yo creo que esta discusión sobre estos puntos de identidad está ligeramente de pasé, ¿no? Es decir, en la pintura latinoamericana, o transfirámonos a la literatura latinoamericana para ser más evidente mi punto de vista, ese problema de identidad quedó en los años 30, con la novela de Ciro Alegría, y Casa, etcétera.

Yo estoy de acuerdo con Fernando de Szyszlo completamente. Yo creo que deberíamos quizás cambiar el tema exactamente de identidad por otra cosa. ¿Qué está pasando en el mundo contemporáneo con las artes plásticas y qué es lo que se pretende que hagan los artistas? A los artistas, o a la obra de los artistas, se les ha quitado toda peligrosidad y en lo posible todo sentido, y se ha evitado en lo posible que digan algo.

Cada vez la obra de los artistas dice menos, carece de posibilidad de lenguaje y carece de posibilidad por consiguiente de incidir sobre la sociedad. Se trata de que sea el bufón, el juglar, el que divierte a la sociedad y el que la entretiene. Me parece que ese es el problema a plantear y ver si los latinoamericanos están de acuerdo con ese proyecto general o si los latinoamericanos en gran parte están en contra de ese proyecto general.

Si están en contra, entonces ¿de qué manera ellos se insurgen, se insubordinan contra ese proyecto general de liquidación del arte o de transformación del arte en algo perfectamente inútil para adorno de las casas de las gentes acomodadas? Me parece que el problema está más centrado en eso que en otra cosa.

Le agradezco a Marta Traba, ahora no estoy de acuerdo en que el arte conceptual, por ejemplo, sea muy divertido. A mí lo que me parece es profundamente aburrido, pero se dan cuenta que tengo la misma idea de fondo que ella. Me gustaría, volviendo un poco para lo que decía Szyszlo de esta obsesión nuestra de encontrarnos, leerles un párrafo de Umberto Eco, que yo puse en mi libro, Aventura plástica, porque me parece bastante revelador, como un hombre, unintelectual italiano inteligente que viaja mucho a Sudamérica nos ve.

Se refiere específicamente a los argentinos, pero se puede generalizar. Dice, "El intelectual argentino sigue con una voracidad y actualidad ejemplares, cuanto ocurreen Francia, Alemania, Italia o los Estados Unidos. Y como es consciente de esta forma de dependencia de otras culturas, continuamente vive en la duda de no producir nada original y se desprecia mientras utiliza productos ajenos. Obrando así, no se da cuenta de cuántas contribuciones originales está dando o es capaz de dara diversas disciplinas".

Termina diciendo, "La forma elemental del provincialismo no consiste entonces en mantener relaciones de dependencia con otras culturas, sino en elaborar siempre la sensación neurótica de ser dependiente". Me parece muy importante esta cita de Humberto Eco, porque creo que, como dice Szyszlo, el problema, en cierto modo, está pasado. Estamos discutiendo aquí cosas de hace 30 años, puesto que yo estoy absolutamente persuadido, para dar una corta lista, que ya desde antiguo, lo que consiguió Torres García, la arquitectura brasileña de los años 40, la obra de Tamayo y Matta, la obra de los cinéticos venezolanos y argentinos, es perfectamente original en cualquier parte del mundo. No existió antes.

Los europeos o los norteamericanos que quieran ver esa clase de obras y que a veces las imitan, los europeos están imitando mucho a los venezolanos y los argentinos últimamente, tienen que referirse a esos modelos. Nosotros ya somos creadores de modelos, pero estoy invadiendo y me estoy haciendo panelista cuando no soy más que presidente.

No quería precisar insidios, en el fondo estoy de acuerdo con Szyszlo, la cuestión está superada, es precisamente por eso que insisto de que somos tenemos una identidad y que nos falta conceptos para asirla. Pero lo digo en un sentido no a priori, sino a posteriori como le corresponde la crítica de arte, en tanto el artista nos da una imagen nueva de nuestra identidad y a la crítica le faltan conceptos para poder establecer en qué medida un Soto o un Leparc es latinoamericano.

Doy la palabra a quien la pida si siguen en este plan. Si no, agrego yo algún elemento para relanzar la discusión. A mí me parece también que exageramos mucho buscando esas raíces. ¿Cuáles son, por último, nuestras raíces? Nosotros somos mestizos culturales y eso no tiene remedio. Yo estoy muy contento de que lo seamos. Una persona tan civilizada, aparentemente, como Julio Cortázar es un mestizo cultural. Severo Sarduy, el cubano de París, es un mestizo cultural también. Lo digo sin ningún sentido peyorativo. En inglés puede ser que lotenga, en español no lo tiene. ¿Por qué? Precisamente, porque en el caso de Sarduy, por ejemplo, que llega muy joven a París, prácticamente a medio formar, empezando a formarse.

Estamos en un mundo, el mundo actual, y cada vez va a ser más en las generaciones más jóvenes, decididamente mezclados. ¿De dónde vamos a sacar nosotros nuestras raíces, si no de la cultura occidental tradicional mezclada en los países que la tienen con las culturas indígenas o precolombinas? De manera que esa obsesión neurótica, como decía Eco, de estar creyendo que siempre estamos imitando. Resulta que hace muchos años que no estamos imitando, que nuestros grandes artistas no imitan, son ellos a su vez modelos, Borges es un modelo.

Nadie se puede imaginar la importancia. El día que abriendo un libro de Michel Foucault, vi la primera página que empezaba así. Dice Borges en una línea, "Ahora estamos admitidos, porque cuando un intelectual sofisticado también como Michel Foucault cita de entrada directamente como si dijera Kierkegaard o dice Nietzsche".

Dice Borges, "Comprendí que estábamos en ese sentido, habíamos pasado ese tiempo de espera. No sé por qué las artes plásticas no van a conocer el mismo reconocimiento que la literatura latinoamericana de vanguardia y de que vuelvo quizás polarizando más con Marta Traba, que por último es la más irredente, la más descontenta. Los otros parecemos ya una vía de autosatisfacción que me vuelva a contestar".

Yo creo que la función del artista es sumamente importante y su función es la de reestablecer los valores lingüísticos y comunicativos del lenguaje. No de trabajar en estas especies de juegos idiotas en los cuales se ha convertido la mayor parte del arte contemporáneo.

Hablan efectivamente de un arte latinoamericano que ha hecho aportes, como puede ser el cinetismo venezolano. Yo estoy absolutamente de acuerdo, sobre todoen el gran aporte que hizo Alejandro Otero al cinetismo, porque no debemos de dejar de reconocer que el cinetismo venezolano empieza con Alejandro Otero y no con Soto y Cruz Díez, como nos ha hecho creer la galería de Denise René de Nueva York. Alejandro Otero ha permanecido todo el tiempo en Venezuela y no ha ido a buscar el espaldarazo de Denise René a París ni mucho menos.

De manera que en este caso yo sí definitivamente creo que se puede hablar de una porte de Latinoamérica al arte del mundo. Al mismo tiempo, aquí yo veo una serie de contradicciones, porque yo también quisiera preguntarle al doctor Bayón, con un interés muy profundo por su respuesta, si él cree sinceramente que hay aportes en alguno de los artistas que él ha seleccionado para ser presentados en la exposición que está aquí. Creo que la exposición seleccionada, salvo poquísimas excepciones, entre los que contaría el Fernando de Szyszlo, Vicente Rojo, Toledo.

Creo que, llegados a este punto, en lugar de intentar encontrar una identidad, voy a reconocer que muchos artistas latinoamericanos han contribuido realmente tanto como en cualquier otro lugar. Por ejemplo, Cuevas acaba de mencionar a Otero, y Otero empezó a trabajar hacia ciertas cosas en los años 40, cuando mucha gente todavía estaba luchando con los primeros periodos de abstracción.

En consecuencia, yo también le reconocería como fuente del cinetismo. Estaba en París en la época en que Soto se fue, así que, en consecuencia, todo esto se desarrolló. Cuando Vasarely empezó a trabajar en estos términos, cuando Agam empezó a trabajar en estos términos, y Burri, los venezolanos ya lo estaban haciendo. Creo que es hora de que reconozcamos que muchas cosas proceden de artistas latinoamericanos.

Otra cosa que me gustaría decir es que, por ejemplo, cuando se habla de resistencia a las fuerzas culturales, y sobre todo creo que uno de los problemas ha sido mucha resistencia hacia la importación en América Latina del expresionismo abstracto. Es muy difícil evitar las influencias extranjeras porque siempre vienen de todas partes. Una de las cosas que creo que es importante tener en cuenta no es tanto lo que hacen los artistas como resistencia, sino cuándo lo hacen.

Puedes coger a alguien como, ¿cómo se llama? Santiago Cárdenas, por ejemplo, que trabajó en Estados Unidos durante ocho años. Por supuesto, tuvo las influencias de la gente con la que entró en contacto, Alex Katz y varios otros. Pero lo que hace ahora no tiene nada que ver con el arte pop, no tiene nada que ver con lo que hacían los norteamericanos. Realmente consiguió desarrollar su propio trabajo y creo que esto existe mucho más de lo que uno se da cuenta.

Por ejemplo, gente como Negret y Ramírez trabajaban en Nueva York en una época en la que el expresionismo abstracto estaba en auge, el arte pop y el arte óptico. Lo que hacían era algo que, por supuesto, había tomado de muchas fuentes. Pero, en consecuencia, volvieron a Colombia y todo lo que hicieron iba contra corriente y debemos tener en cuenta la cronología, el momento en que estaban desarrollando estas cosas. En consecuencia, no creo que podamos hablar realmente en términos de, digamos, imperialismo cultural, porque tienen que obtener sus fuentes de algún sitio.

Yo voy a aprovecharme de la circunstancia de que Szyszlo habló de literatura para colarme en este panel de arte. Mi ignorancia total en la materia me justifica. Como temo que las conversaciones que siguen esta tarde y mañana continúen con cierto tipo de confusión, casi diría de vocabulario, me parece oportuno aclarar un problema.

Creo que aquí está ocurriendo lo que el maestro uruguayo Carlos Vázquez Ferreira llamaba tomar lo complementario por contradictorio. Es decir, nosotros hablamos por un lado del reconocimiento del arte hispanoamericano en las grandes metrópolis, París o Nueva York. Hablamos como si fuera lo mismo sobre la autenticidad del arte hispanoamericano, hablamos como si fuera lo mismo de la búsqueda de la identidad del creador o artista latinoamericano, y hablamos de los mismos, de organizar frentes culturales para unificar la actividad de los artistas hispanoamericanos.

Hay una anécdota de Borges que él ha contado muchas veces. Refiriéndose a la publicación de nuestros primeros ensayos, él dijo que se habían vendido 33 ejemplares durante varios años. 33 ejemplares, estaba muy contento. Dice, "Por que yo me puedo imaginar 33 lectores, pero ahora que se venden 100 mil, ya he perdido todo interés". Porque, ¿cómo voy a poder imaginar a 100.000 lectores? De maneraque desde un punto de vista estrictamente individual, el artista que crea o que pinta, que escribe o que compone música para el reconocimiento es un señor que tiene ungrado bastante avanzado de la neurosis conocida con el nombre narcisismo.

Todos estos problemas que son interesantísimos desde el punto de vista patológico, no tienen nada que ver con la crítica de arte ni con la crítica de nada. Vuelvo a decir, tienen que ver con los problemas que uno tiene en un cocktail party cuando se encuentra con uno de estos grandes egos superinflados. También hay personas que son de una modestia tan grande que insisten todo el tiempo que uno no lea los libros de ellos, que cuando encuentran un libro de ellos en la casa de uno los tiran a la basura, que se niegan a firmar autógrafos y que naturalmente jamás asisten a un congreso de estos.

Yes, I'm a bit of an intruder here among the panelists of the plastic arts, but of course I wanted to talk about some concrete things that interested me. But after listening to Rodriguez Monegal, I naturally have to refer a little to this curious system of reasoning, which begins by way of anecdote and ends up raising certain quite serious things such as the customs of Moscow or Peking, or Teheran. He adds, perhaps a little in the sense of the new definition of dependence given by Kissinger when he says that the United States is already dependent on countries such as oil producers.

I think the discussion here has been very interesting, perhaps a little abstract. I want to bring a concrete example of how the instances of the extra-plastic can determine and influence in a decisive way the artistic activity of a people and a society. In the case of Chile, years ago, I had the pleasure of being able to see on all the walls of my country, on all the most important cities of Chile, how an extraordinary plastic movement of true popular roots arose, which, using folkloric motifs, even indigenous ones, could express a series of elements and figurations.

It was a massive art, it was an important art where groups and minorities were no longer differentiated, but all young university workers could paint at night in a clear relationship of political activity with artistic activity. The day after the coup, on September 12, 1973, due to a systematic cleaning operation, all the walls of my country appeared immune to that artistic ferment that was beginning. This is a very clear example of how the problems of dependence can have a decisive influence not only on art, but on a society.

It seems to me that it does not really account for the whole problematic of Latin American art because, for instance, it rejects the social cut, the social class cut. Naturally, it does not happen, nor do I think we have to start recognizing a relative independence of Latin American artistic creation with the famous example of Fucono's first page, quoting Borges.

This started much earlier, for example Sarmiento, who writes his Facundo in 1845 and who is an unconditional admirer of the United States at that time, and at that time being an unconditional admirer of the United States was a profoundly progressive element and attitude.

Now, there is no doubt that this dependence in grotesque and extreme terms exists. I, who know nothing about art, once went to a gallery in Paris, where there were many young Latin American artists, Venezuelan, Argentinean, etc., and I was able to see in one part, I think, an exhibition of kinetic art. There was a little machine there with many colored lights. I realized that something was wrong because the lights started to malfunction.

I asked one of these French concierges, “Sir, what about this art show?”. It was an exhibition. “Oh,” he said to me, [French language]. “That has never worked,” it was about making a kind of new artistic expression with kinetic elements, and since the three days the exhibition was there the whole electrical element had failed. I think it's quite a case...

Now, I'm answering Profesor Greer, if I can. When he asks, "Does an audience for plastic art exist in Latin America?" I tell him, yes. It already exists Szyszlo said, and it's not only of very famous artists as himself, but there are many artists that can live in their own countries or travel or sell in next countries. For instance, Mexicans, selling their products, their works, in Argentina or viceversa. Actually, without depend that much on the external markets. That was a remark that he asked me and I'm just answering.

To all these entities, as co-coordinator of this symposium, I wish to express my personal gratitude and that of the colleagues and students of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese that I have the honor to direct. In focusing our attention on Plural, we did so with the desire to examine one of the most influential organs in the Latin American world today in literary criticism, in criticism of the visual arts and in the critical approach to present-day society.

Our interest was the possibility of an exploration from inside and outside of two fundamental themes. The first, the situation of literary criticism in Latin America. The second, the critical function of literature in Latin America. To explore these issues from the inside, that is, from the internal perspective of Plural, we naturally invited its director, the editor-in-chief and a group of contributors to the journal.

This magazine also has an audience and that audience is the one that can offer us the external perspective, that is to say, how Plural's position on these two topics is perceived from the outside. Although the members of the two round tables we are going to have on literary issues will not make direct references to the journal, we can assume that their observations and comments on the two topics to be discussed will be made from an approach that will allow us to glimpse the philosophical position from which this criticism is exercised in the pages of Plural, and also, the reception and perception of that position from the outside.

Sí, estoy un poco intruso aquí dentro de los panelistas artes plásticas, pero claro, yo quería hablar de algunas cosas concretas que me interesaban. Pero después de escuchar a Rodríguez Monegal, naturalmente tengo que referirme un poco a este curioso sistema de razonamiento, que empieza por la vía de la anécdota y que termina planteando ciertas cosas bastante serias como esto de las aduanas de Moscú o Pekín, o Teherán. Agrega él, tal vez un poco en el sentido de la definición nueva de dependencia que ha dado Kissinger cuando dice que Estados Unidos depende ya de países como los productores de petróleo.

Yo creo que la discusión aquí ha sido muy interesante, tal vez un poco abstracta. Yo quiero traer un ejemplo concreto de cómo las instancias extraplásticas pueden determinar e influir de un modo decisivo la actividad artística de un pueblo y de una sociedad. En el caso de Chile, años atrás, yo tuve el placer de poder ver sobre todas las murallas de mi patria, sobre todas las ciudades más importantes de Chile, cómo surgía un extraordinario movimiento plástico de verdadera raíz popular, que utilizando motivos folclóricos, incluso indígenas, podía expresar una serie de elementos y figuraciones.

Era un arte masivo, era un arte importante donde ya no estaban diferenciados los grupos ni las minorías, sino que todos los jóvenes obreros universitarios podían pintar en las noches en una clara relación de actividad política con la actividad artística. Al día siguiente del golpe, el 12 de septiembre de 1973, por una operación de limpieza sistemática, todas las murallas de mi patria aparecieron inmunes a ese fermento artístico que comenzaba. Ese es un ejemplo muy claro de cómo los problemas de dependencia pueden influir de un modo decisivo no solo sobre el arte, sino sobre una sociedad.

Me parece que no da cuenta realmente de toda la problemática del arte latinoamericano porque, por ejemplo, recusa el corte social, el corte de clase social. Naturalmente, no ocurre, ni creo que hay que empezar a reconocer una relativa independencia de la creación artística latinoamericana con el famoso ejemplo de la primera página de Fucono, citando a Borges.

Esto empezó mucho antes, por ejemplo Sarmiento, que escribe su Facundo en 1845 y que es un admirador incondicional de los Estados Unidos en esa época, y en esa época ser admirador incondicional de los Estados Unidos era un elemento y una actitud profundamente progresista.

Ahora, que esa dependencia en términos grotescos y extremos existe, es indudable. Yo, que no sé nada de arte, me asomé una vez a una galería de París, donde había muchos jóvenes artistas latinoamericanos, venezolanos, argentinos, etcétera, y pude ver en una parte, creo una muestra de cinetismo. Había una maquinita ahí con muchas luces de colores. Yo me di cuenta que algo pasaba porque las luces empezaban a funcionar mal.

Le pregunté a uno de estos concierges franceses, "Señor, ¿qué pasa con esta muestra artística?". Era una exposición. "Oh", me dijo, [idioma francés]. "Eso no ha funcionado nunca", se trataba de hacer una especie de nueva expresión artística con elementos cinéticos, y desde los tres días que estaba la exposición ahí había fallado todo el elemento eléctrico. Yo creo que es un caso bastante--

Ahora, voy a responder al profesor Greer, si puedo. Cuando pregunta: «¿Existe un público para el arte plástico en América Latina?», le digo que sí. Ya existe, dijo Szyszlo, y no solo se trata de artistas muy famosos como él, sino que hay muchos artistas que pueden vivir en sus propios países o viajar o vender en países vecinos. Por ejemplo, los mexicanos venden sus productos, sus obras, en Argentina o viceversa. En realidad, sin depender tanto de los mercados externos. Esa fue una observación que me hizo y solo estoy respondiendo.

A todas estas entidades como co-coordinador de este simposio, deseo expresar mi agradecimiento personal y el de los colegas y estudiantes del Departamento de Español y Portugués que tengo el honor de dirigir. Al enfocar nuestra atención en Plural, lo hicimos con el afán de examinar uno de los órganos más influyentes hoy día en el mundo latinoamericano en la crítica literaria, en la crítica de las artes plásticas y en el enfoque crítico de la sociedad presente.

Nuestro interés era la posibilidad de una exploración desde dentro y desde fuera de dos temas fundamentales. El primero, la situación de la crítica literaria en América Latina. El segundo, la función crítica de la literatura en América Latina. Para explorar estos temas desde dentro, es decir, desde la perspectiva interna de Plural, invitamos naturalmente a su director, al jefe de redacción y a un grupo de colaboradores de la revista.

Esta revista tiene también un público y ese público es el que nos puede ofrecer la perspectiva externa, es decir, cómo se perciben desde fuera la posición de Plural en cuanto a estos dos temas. Aunque los miembros de las dos mesas redondas que vamos a tener sobre temas literarios no hicieran referencias directas a la revista, podremos suponer que sus observaciones y comentarios sobre los dos temas a discutir se harán desde un enfoque que nos permitirá vislumbrar la posición filosófica desde la que se ejerce esa crítica en las páginas de Plural, y además, la recepción y la percepción de esa posición desde fuera.

Just to raise the question is already a bit disturbing, because it would seem that there is an inversion. That is to say, that the interpretation of a creative work, in some way, since it is asked, it would be possible that it precedes the creation itself. If it is true, as has often been said, as Octavio Paz, among others, has repeated many times, that modern art, especially perhaps modern poetry, is at the same time critical, it is a critical creation. I also think it can be said that criticism has become partly creative, in a peculiar way, naturally, just as poetry is also critical in a peculiar way.

Sólo plantear la pregunta, es algo ya un poco inquietante, porque parecería que hay una inversión. Es decir, que la interpretación de una obra creadora, de alguna manera, puesto que se pregunta, sería posible que antecediera a la creación misma. Si lo es o no, será cuestión de discutirlo, pero ya la posibilidad misma es un poco inquietante. Sucede que me parece en el arte y la literatura modernos, algunos aspectos, por lo menos, algunos aspectos se han desarrollado en una simbiosis estrecha entre la creación y la crítica.

Si es cierto, como se ha dicho a menudo, Octavio Paz, entre otros, lo ha repetido muchas veces, que el arte moderno, sobre todo quizá la poesía moderna, es a la vez crítica, es una creación crítica. También creo que puede decirse que la crítica se ha vuelto en parte creadora, de una manera peculiar, naturalmente, como también la poesía es crítica de una manera peculiar.

I believe that despite what my colleague Monsiváis has said, deep down we agree. That is to say, there may be a difference in emphasis, but deep down I believe we agree. Perhaps, in the context of what has been said here, I would like to reinforce some of the points I have raised. I believe that artists, as we discussed yesterday in the panel on Latin American art, and Latin American writers, do not want to be condemned to the limitations of the Third World, even though they know they are part of the Third World, because they have reached a level in their art and writing that is not Third World.

Who can doubt, for example, that Tamayo is one of the great names in contemporary painting? Who can doubt that a writer like Borges has become a living force in all contemporary literature of this century? Now, the problem arises in terms of the functions and levels of scope and expression of art.

For example, Neruda had no qualms about admitting that he made propaganda art. I am a carpenter, I am a plumber, I am a gas fitter. Prologue to [unintelligible 00:29:36]. He has written a huge number of books, as we all know, intended for that purpose, as he says, “Propaganda in literature.” That function exists and is undoubtedly present. For many, it is a vital function. I believe that Latin American artists do not want to remain in that role. Neruda himself did not want to remain in that role. Throughout his social work, he speaks of militant, combative poetry, but he also speaks of what he calls “the wave of mysteries” or, in his posthumous poetry, “the well of being.” It is strange that such a militant poet should nevertheless enter into the eternal questions of poetry. We also know that Neruda learned to write in the European tradition of 19th- and 20th-century poetry.

Yo creo que a pesar de lo que ha dicho mi colega Monsiváis, en el fondo estamos de acuerdo. Es decir, puede haber una diferencia de énfasis, pero en el fondo creo que estamos de acuerdo. Yo quisiera tal vez, en el contexto de lo que se ha dicho aquí, tal vez reforzar algunos de los puntos que he planteado. Yo creo que el artista, hablábamos ayer en el panel de arte latinoamericano, el escritor latinoamericano, no quieren estar condenados a las limitaciones del tercer mundo, a pesar de que saben que son parte del tercer mundo, porque han llegado a un nivel en su arte y en la escritura, que no son tercer mundo.

¿Quién puede dudar, por ejemplo, que Tamayo es uno de los grandes nombres de la pintura contemporánea? ¿Quién puede dudar que un escritor como Borges se ha convertido en una fuerza viva en toda la literatura contemporánea de este siglo? Ahora, el problema se plantea en cuanto a funciones y niveles de alcance y expresión del arte.

Por ejemplo, Neruda no tenía ninguna inhibición para admitir que él hacía arte de propaganda. Soy un carpintero, soy un plomero, soy un gásfiter. Prólogo de [unintelligible 00:29:36]. Ha escrito una cantidad enorme, todos sabemos, de libros destinadas a esa función como él dice, "Propagandística en la literatura". Esa función existe y se da indudablemente. Para muchos es una función vital. Creo que el artista latinoamericano no quiere quedarse en esa función. El propio Neruda no ha querido quedarse en esa función. A lo largo de toda su obra social él habla de esa poesía militante de combate, pero habla también de lo que él dice, "La ola de los misterios", o en su poesía póstuma, "El pozo del ser". Es extraño que un poeta tan militante, sin embargo, entre en los interrogantes eternos de la poesía. Además sabemos que Neruda aprendió a escribir en toda la tradición europea de la poesía del Siglo XIX y XX.

I find it very interesting to confront, in a certain way, the violence with which we have handled the tables corresponding to art, the moderation and the relative agreements that have been reached in this table dedicated to literature.

I think it is also due to the fact that, evidently, literary critics have operating systems and a methodology that we art critics are just starting out with, and it is much more chaotic. What I would simply like to say is that there is a kind of reductionist system against which I really don't feel at all well.

I've been told that this chore is presently to 2 to 1, literature to art. I assume that is a quantitative and not a qualitative assessment. Nonetheless, we approached the second of these sessions, facing the plastic arts, with a really stunning assemblage of persons. As seen to my left, your right, the figure in the center you'll recognize as Rufino Tamayo, who needs certainly no introduction in the world of arts.

A mí me parece muy interesante para confrontar, en cierto modo la violencia con que hemos manejado las mesas correspondientes a arte, la moderación y los relativos acuerdos que se han tenido en esta mesa dedicada a la literatura.

Creo que además se debe a que, evidentemente, los críticos literarios cuentan con unos sistemas operativos y una metodología con que nosotros los críticos de arte realmente estamos apenas iniciando y es mucho más caótica. Lo que yo quisiera simplemente decir, es que hay como un sistema reduccionista contra el cual realmente no me siento nada bien.

Me han dicho que esta tarea está actualmente a 2 a 1, la literatura al arte. Supongo que se trata de una valoración cuantitativa y no cualitativa. No obstante, nos acercamos a la segunda de estas sesiones, frente a las artes plásticas, con un conjunto de personas realmente impresionante. A mi izquierda, a vuestra derecha, la figura del centro la reconoceréis como Rufino Tamayo, que desde luego no necesita presentación en el mundo de las artes.

Now, the business at hand today is described under a definition which is not the simplest arrangement in Anglo-Saxon English. It says, with what models, local and imported, does the Latin American plastic artist face— with what models, local and imported, does the Latin American plastic artist face his circumstances? That's kind of rough to deal with. And with what sorts of critical feedback is he faced? 

Whether or not, as in some nations, an artist hands what he knows to another artist by hand and the younger artist takes that from his hand, and what slips out between them is lost, but what's kept becomes part of a nation's patrimony. It's that close and continuous interchange between persons which is one aspect of the continuing growth of a plastic tradition. Well, okay— so, it's an operative model, but in less complicated language, we're talking about the thing which is passed from one man to another, but one man represents a generation, a time, a culture. The younger takes what he can and goes forth with it. 

Manuel Felguérez. Fifteen years ago or maybe more, time passes very quickly, I met him in Lima. By the way, the one who introduced me to him was Fernando de Szyszlo, an artist present here and whom you know. He was finishing an exhibition at the Contemporary Art Institute of Lima, and I was going to do the next one. I was about to do the next one. I say ‘was’ because I had to wait a month since at that moment there were elections, in which, by the way, Belaúnde or someone like that was elected, and there wasn’t a single printing press that would print a damn catalog that they gave me at the Institute.

Felguérez is one of the pioneers of the so-called Young Movement of Mexico, among many other artists, including José Luis Cuevas present here, who have revolutionized the landscape of Mexican art following the initiative, of course, of the master Rufino Tamayo. Very recently, he has won the grand prize of honor at the São Paulo Biennial. I believe we can warmly congratulate him on this great award, although, like Aracy Amaral, I personally do not agree with the policies of the biennials. However, of course, I must also clarify that I have submitted work to the Biennial many years ago, but I have since changed my mind.

From here in Austin, I understand that Manuel Felguérez will also be going to MIT with a Guggenheim fellowship. Because Felguérez, among other things, is a painter—or rather, an artist. Painter, sculptor, and also dedicated to graphic arts—who uses a strange thing called a computer. I hope it doesn’t compute me too much or this table too much either, but he is indeed a remarkable artist who has tried or is trying to combine the problem of art and science, which qualifies him very well for the topic of this panel.

Jorge Alberto Manrique. I have to speak well of this gentleman because he just invited me to a symposium in Zacatecas. So that he invites me again next time, of course I want to make a good impression. One of the youngest members of the Mexican Academy of History. Director of the Institute of Aesthetic Research at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Art critic, more of contemporary art, even though his specialty is colonial art.

In Brazil, this is something new. It is the opposite of what happens in Mexico, where this could be related to a type of reactionary art, also connected with the muralist art of the 1920s. In Brazil, on the contrary, the interest in popular culture only existed, aside from contemporaneity, in the 1930s under Vargas's government. In a way, of course, demagogically.

I try to clarify which operational models Latin American art has used, uses, and will use. For this purpose, I must cite some semiotic concepts. Every work of art has as its purpose the transmission of a message. Therefore, it must be constituted under a system of probabilities that we call a code; that is, an element of order that makes the transmission of a language possible.

Ahora, el tema que nos ocupa hoy está descrito con una definición que no es precisamente la más sencilla en el inglés anglosajón. Dice: ¿con qué modelos, locales e importados, se enfrenta el artista plástico latinoamericano—con qué modelos, locales e importados, enfrenta el artista plástico latinoamericano sus circunstancias? Eso es algo difícil de abordar. ¿Y con qué tipo de crítica se enfrenta?

Ya sea que, como en algunas naciones, un artista transmita lo que sabe a otro artista de mano en mano, y el artista más joven tome eso de su mano, y lo que se escapa entre ellos se pierda, pero lo que se conserva se convierte en parte del patrimonio de una nación. Es ese intercambio cercano y continuo entre personas lo que constituye un aspecto del crecimiento constante de una tradición plástica. Bueno, está bien— entonces, es un modelo operativo, pero dicho en un lenguaje menos complicado, estamos hablando de aquello que se transmite de un hombre a otro, pero un hombre representa una generación, una época, una cultura. El más joven toma lo que puede y sigue adelante con ello.

Manuel Felguérez. Hace quince años o más tal vez, los tiempos pasan muy rápidamente, lo conocí en Lima. Por cierto, quien me lo presentó fue Fernando de Szyszlo, artista acá presente y que ustedes conocen. Él terminaba una exposición en el Instituto de Arte Contemporáneo de Lima y yo iba a hacer la siguiente. Estaba por hacer la siguiente. Digo estaba porque tuve que esperar un mes porque en ese momento hubo elecciones, en la que por cierto fue elegido Belaúnde o algo así, y no había imprenta que imprimiera un maldito catálogo que me dieron en el Instituto. 

Felguérez es uno de los pioneros del llamado Movimiento Joven de México, entre muchos otros artistas, incluyendo acá presente a José Luis Cuevas, que han revolucionado el panorama del arte mexicano después de la iniciativa, desde luego, del maestro Rufino Tamayo. Muy recientemente ha ganado el gran premio de honor de la Bienal de São Paulo. Creo que podemos felicitarlo muy calurosamente sobre este gran premio, aunque yo como Aracy Amaral, yo por lo menos no comparto las políticas de las bienales. Sin embargo, claro, tengo que aclarar también que yo sí he mandando a la Bienal hace muchos años, pero ya he cambiado de parecer. 

De acá de Austin tengo entendido también que Manuel Felguérez se dirigirá a MIT con una beca Guggenheim. Porque Felguérez entre otras cosas es un pintor—o un artista, mejor dicho. Pintor, escultor y también dedicado a las artes gráficas—que usa una extraña cosa que se llama computadora. Espero que no me compute demasiado y no compute demasiado también esta mesa, pero sí es un notable artista que ha tratado o está tratando de combinar el problema del arte y la ciencia, lo cual lo califica muy bien para el tema de esta mesa. 

Jorge Alberto Manrique. Tengo que hablar bien de este señor porque me acaba de invitar a un simposio en Zacatecas. Para que me invite una próxima vez, desde luego quiero quedar bien. Uno de los más jóvenes miembros de la Academia de Historia de México. Director del Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Crítico de arte, más bien de arte contemporáneo, a pesar de que su especialidad es el arte colonial. 

En Brasil esto es una novedad. Es el contrario de lo que pasa en México, donde esto podría ser relacionado con un tipo de arte reaccionaria, relacionada también con el arte muralista de los años '20. En Brasil, al contrario, el interés por lo popular solamente existió, además de la contemporaneidad, en los años '30 bajo el gobierno de Vargas. De una manera, claro, demagógica. 

Trato de aclararme cuáles son los modelos operativos de los cuales se ha servido, se sirve y se servirá el arte latinoamericano. Para este hecho debo citar algunos conceptos semióticos. Toda obra de arte tiene como fin la transmisión de un mensaje. Por lo tanto, debe estar constituida bajo un sistema de probabilidades que llamamos código; o sea, un elemento de orden que hace posible la transmisión de un lenguaje. 

What is that cultural concept that makes the meaning of our works possible? Of course, we can affirm that this context, in terms of the formal aspect, is what is called modern art, and this is one of the values of Western culture. No work of American art has ever been critically judged outside of this context.

Modern art was born as a break from local cultures, through the incorporation and revaluation of the aesthetic values of so-called primitive cultures, whose artistic value had been hidden under the veil of anthropological phenomena. Thus, if it is valid for Picasso to incorporate elements of African art into his work, it is also valid that Wifredo Lam or Rufino Tamayo reveal and revalue in their own work certain aspects of the original aesthetics of our countries. This is not the same as the theoretical aberration suffered by most Mexican muralists of the 1920s and 1930s, who attempted a prefabricated project of national identity-seeking.

If in the essence of modern art there exists this possibility of changing context and, therefore, meaning, the cultural past of humanity, we can also accept that this code has been applied to the present, as long as we do not lose sight of the fact that the primary function of art is aesthetics.

The message that constitutes a work of art can fulfill one or several functions at once—illustrative, referential, or emotional—as long as these appear as secondary functions. Its primary function must always be the aesthetic one, and this is only fulfilled when the message presents itself as self-reflective; that is, when it aims to draw the recipient’s attention primarily to its own form, denoting things as real as the cultural phenomena themselves.

Poetics tells us that the aesthetic message must be ambiguous, as it is made up of highly informative elements while also containing sufficient rhetorical elements or redundancy bands that make the transmission of the message possible.

So once embedded in the traditional elements we call modern art, it becomes a rhetorical bridge that reduces our problem to the creation or invention of a highly informative message—works that are capable of showing the viewer a new aspect of reality and, with this, a new vision of the world.

I don’t see how contemporary art can exist without the use and method of contemporary technology. We must also keep in mind that art is always an ideology. Action painting, pop art, superrealism, and many other forms that artists from highly industrialized countries have used as a way to criticize their society are not valid for the Latin American artist. As Octavio Paz said, "It is not possible for him to rebel against something that has not happened to him." On the contrary, our societies are run with a paternalistic mindset, improvised, and disorganized.

Perhaps that is why art with a constructive sense—art that shows great rigor in its creation—is a phenomenon that has already become a tradition in our countries. From Argentina to Mexico, we find values or movements that reflect this phenomenon. I do not consider it valid to diminish the semantic value of this type of expression. If it were true that it is not a highly communicative language with a clear ideology, it would not be understandable why it was so viciously repressed, as Constructivism was in Stalin’s Russia or the Bauhaus in Hitler’s Germany.

Geometrism, just to give an example — the geometrism produced in a Latin American country has, by that very fact, a different meaning. It is offering an explanation of Latin American reality and thus takes on a different meaning than a similar artistic expression created in any of the model capitals of the West. For now, I think that’s all I can say. Until next time.

The first is the old but always renewable scholastic argument between the universal and the particular. Mondrian wished to carry modern art into an abstract realm that knew no national boundaries, that was indeed universal. The ambitious expatriates of Paris, on the other hand, weren't averse to confecting something particular which came to be known as the School of Paris. Malevich, in the exciting months before and after the Russian Revolution, soared into his suprematist vision of universality, while his rival Tatlin addressed himself to a particular revolution and the particular needs of what he hoped was a radically-changed society. 

On the other hand, if circumstances are misleadingly favorable, responses are sometimes quite readable, but from a negative direction. I take now a personal prejudice. I think that the so-called pop art movement, which wasn't a movement, it was born of a self-satisfied and in fact disgustingly fad culture. Unfortunately, it was exported. 

The immediate circumstance in certain Latin American countries has emphatically and legibly affected artists. For instance, agitprop art appeared in specific circumstances in Latin America on a scale not equaled since 1918 in the Soviet Union. I'm tempted to think that the communications I get from the Center of Art and Communication in Buenos Aires are responses to certain circumstances. 

Last week, shortly before I left, in fact, I got the second manifestation of the Arte Sociológico, in which the authors struggle with their dilemma, how to bring a Marxist sympathy into play without foundering in the clichés of agitprop art. Surely the extreme political situation in many Latin American countries encourages this insistence on the social function of the arts. 

I'm quoting from this manifesto, quote, "Sociological art includes the new mass media, critical pedagogical methods, and refers fundamentally to sociological analysis." This leaning on another discipline, and also a very unfortunate capitulation before the impressive new diction of the French structuralists and epistemologists and all the other-ists that have been through this whole conference, seems to me the product of an extremely uncomfortable situation. The critical emphasis on criticism gives it away as an Aesopian communication issued in a place where it is sometimes fatal to be an artist. 

¿Cuál es ese concepto cultural que hace posible la significación de nuestras obras? Desde luego que podemos afirmar que ese contexto, en cuanto a la parte formal, es el llamado arte moderno, y este es uno de los valores de la cultura occidental. Jamás obra alguna de arte americano ha sido juzgada críticamente fuera de este contexto. 

El arte moderno nació como un rompimiento de las culturas locales, con la incorporación y revaloración de los valores estéticos de las culturas mal llamadas primitivas, cuyo valor artístico había sido ocultado bajo el velo del fenómeno antropológico. Es así que si es válido el que Picasso incorpore a su creación elementos del arte negro, también resultó válido el hecho de que Wifredo Lam o Rufino Tamayo muestren y revaloricen en su propia obra algunos aspectos de la estética original de nuestros países. Que no es lo mismo que la aberración teórica que sufrieron la mayoría de los pintores mexicanos del muralismo de los 20s y 30s, al intentar un proyecto prefabricado de búsqueda de identidad nacional. 

Si en la esencia del arte moderno existe esta posibilidad de cambiar de contexto y, por lo tanto, significación, el pasado cultural de la humanidad, también podemos aceptar que este código se ha aplicado a la actualidad, siempre y cuando no se pierda de vista que la función primera del arte es la estética. 

El mensaje que constituye una obra de arte puede cumplir una o varias funciones a la vez, ilustrativas, referenciales o emotivas, siempre y cuando aparezcan como función segunda. Su función primera debe ser siempre la estética y esta solo se cumple cuando el mensaje se presenta como autorreflexivo, es decir, cuando pretende atraer la atención del destinatario en primer lugar sobre su propia forma, denotando cosas tan reales, como reales son los fenómenos culturales. 

La poética nos dice que el mensaje estético debe ser ambiguo, en función de estar constituido por elementos altamente informativos, y a su vez contener suficientes elementos retóricos o bandas de redundancia, que hagan posible la transmisión del mensaje. 

Así que una vez incrustados en los elementos tradicionales que llamamos arte moderno, este se convierte en un puente retórico que reduce nuestro problema a la creación o invención de un mensaje altamente informativo, obras que sean capaces de mostrar a quien las percibe, un nuevo aspecto de la realidad y, con esto, una nueva visión del mundo. 

No veo cómo puede existir un arte contemporáneo sin el uso y el método de la tecnología contemporánea. También debemos tener en cuenta que el arte siempre es una ideología, el action painting, el pop art, el superrealismo y muchas otras formas en que el artista de los países altamente industrializados han realizado como una forma de crítica a su sociedad, no es válido al artista latinoamericano. Como decía Octavio Paz, "No le es posible rebelarse contra algo que no le ha acontecido". Todo lo contrario, nuestras sociedades son dirigidas con un criterio paternalista, improvisadas y desorganizadas. 

Tal vez por eso el arte con sentido constructivo, en el que se muestra gran rigor en su elaboración, es un fenómeno que ya es tradición en nuestros países. De Argentina a México encontramos valores o movimientos que muestran este fenómeno. No considero válido restar valor semántico a este tipo de expresión. Si fuera cierto que no es un lenguaje altamente comunicativo, con una clara ideología, no sería comprensible el que hubiera sido reprimido con tanta saña, como lo fue el constructivismo en la Rusia de Stalin, o el Bauhaus en la Alemania de Hitler. 

El geometrismo, por poner un ejemplo, el geometrismo que se haga en un país latinoamericano tiene por solo ese hecho un sentido diverso. Está dando una explicación de la realidad latinoamericana y cobra así un sentido diferente que una expresión artística parecida ejecutada en cualquiera de las capitales modelo de occidente. Por lo pronto, creo que es todo lo que puedo decir. Será para la próxima. 

El primero es el antiguo pero siempre renovable argumento escolástico entre lo universal y lo particular. Mondrian deseaba llevar el arte moderno a un ámbito abstracto que no conociera fronteras nacionales, que fuera verdaderamente universal. Los ambiciosos expatriados de París, por otro lado, no se resistían a confeccionar algo particular que llegó a conocerse como la Escuela de París. Malevich, en los emocionantes meses antes y después de la Revolución Rusa, se elevó hacia su visión suprematista de la universalidad, mientras que su rival Tatlin se enfocó en una revolución particular y en las necesidades específicas de lo que él esperaba fuera una sociedad radicalmente cambiada.

Por otro lado, si las circunstancias son engañosamente favorables, las respuestas a veces son bastante legibles, pero desde una dirección negativa. Ahora tomo un prejuicio personal. Creo que el llamado movimiento del arte pop, que no fue un movimiento, nació de una cultura satisfecha consigo misma y, de hecho, desagradablemente de moda. Desafortunadamente, fue exportado.

La circunstancia inmediata en ciertos países de América Latina ha afectado enfáticamente y de manera legible a los artistas. Por ejemplo, el arte agitprop apareció en circunstancias específicas en América Latina a una escala no igualada desde 1918 en la Unión Soviética. Me inclino a pensar que las comunicaciones que recibo del Centro de Arte y Comunicación en Buenos Aires son respuestas a ciertas circunstancias.

La semana pasada, poco antes de irme, de hecho, recibí la segunda manifestación del Arte Sociológico, en la que los autores luchan con su dilema, cómo incorporar una simpatía marxista sin naufragar en los clichés del arte agitprop. Seguramente, la situación política extrema en muchos países de América Latina fomenta esta insistencia en la función social de las artes.

Cito de este manifiesto, cita, "El arte sociológico incluye los nuevos medios de comunicación masiva, métodos pedagógicos críticos, y se refiere fundamentalmente al análisis sociológico." Esta inclinación hacia otra disciplina, y también una capitulación muy desafortunada ante la impresionante nueva dicción de los estructuralistas franceses, epistemólogos y todos los otros -istas que han pasado por toda esta conferencia, me parece el producto de una situación sumamente incómoda. El énfasis crítico en la crítica lo delata como una comunicación aesópica emitida en un lugar donde a veces es fatal ser artista.

No, I'm not going to read it. I'm not a reader. I just want to point out the fact that, as external models, we are presented, for example, with this group known as the Blue Chip Artists, which in gaming terms—since I don't play in Spanish, I don’t know what it would be called. Maybe blue chips. I don’t know—those who play poker or these kinds of games might know. But this group of painters called the Blue Chip Artists are, of course, going to create a whole influence from their positions of power, from their positions of great commercial value.

What models are we Latin American painters supposed to follow? We would never dream—even speaking in these commercial terms, just to shed some light on the matter, since I have no other interest—how could we even reach those incredible prices of a Stella at $75,000, or a Jasper Johns or a Rauschenberg, with prices that not even the great Latin American masters could ever hope to reach?

A second aspect would be what we might call dissemination criticism; that is, the critic as a translator of a language of forms into social, political, or cultural aspects in general. This translation that the critic must carry out for the public is, at first, of no interest to the artist himself, but it is vital for his existence, because if there is no translator, the process of acceptance of certain aesthetic values is delayed, it takes time. A reduction of time between the cultural phenomenon of production and the cultural phenomenon of understanding or grasping the meaning that art has for society.

Of course, in this regard there are two types of criticism. The one that Manrique referred to as testimony, which is difficult to generalize across all of Latin America. I believe that in Mexico, the Institute of Aesthetic Research has the fabulous opportunity to carry out this type of criticism, although unfortunately it has only recently begun.

Just as that type of criticism exists, there is also what we might call elevated journalistic criticism. The kind done by poets, by literary figures, who, because they understand linguistic phenomena, are usually the ones best able to grasp the spirit that animates a work of art. There, of course, without citing antiquity—Mallarmé or any of the great French poets, we also see that the tradition has carried over to Latin America. In the case of Mexico, we find poets like Octavio Paz, who has always paid attention to visual aesthetic creation. The same goes for writers like Juan García Ponce, who has dedicated a large part of his work in this direction.

No, no lo voy a leer. No soy lector. Solamente quiero apuntar al hecho de que como modelos exteriores se nos presentan, por ejemplo, este equipo de lo que se llama Blue Chip Artists, que en términos de juego—como yo no juego en español, yo no sé cómo se llamaría. Serán fichas azules. No sé los que jueguen al póker o estas cuestiones podrán saber, pero este equipo de pintores que se llaman Blue Chip Artists van, claro, a crear toda una influencia desde sus premisas de poder, desde sus posiciones de gran valor comercial. 

¿A qué modelos vamos a someternos nosotros los pintores latinoamericanos? Que nunca soñaríamos, inclusive ya hablando en estos términos comerciales solamente como para iluminar la cuestión, ya que no tengo otro interés ¿Cómo podríamos llegar inclusive a esos precios tan increíbles de un Stella en $75.000, una Jasper Johns o una Rauschenberg con precios que ni siquiera los grandes maestros latinoamericanos pueden inclusive llegar? 

En segundo aspecto entraría la crítica de difusión; o sea, el crítico en cuanto traductor de un lenguaje de formas a aspectos sociales, aspectos políticos o aspectos culturales en general. Esta traducción que debe hacer el crítico al público en principio no interesa al artista mismo, pero le es vital para su existencia puesto que si no hay el traductor, el fenómeno de aceptación de ciertos valores estéticos se alarga, toma tiempo. Un reductor de tiempo entre el fenómeno cultural, que es la producción, y el fenómeno cultural, que es el entender o el comprender la significación que un arte tiene ante la sociedad. 

Desde luego que en este aspecto existen dos tipos de crítica. La que llamaba Manrique testimonio, que es difícil generalizar para toda América Latina. Creo que en México, el Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas tiene la fabulosa oportunidad de hacer este tipo de crítica y que desgraciadamente lleva muy corto tiempo que se ha emprendido. 

Así como existe esa crítica, existe la crítica más que periodística, podríamos decir, elevándola. La crítica que hacen los poetas, que hacen los literatos y que a su vez por comprender fenómenos lingüísticos son los que normalmente han sabido mejor captar el espíritu que anima una obra arte. Ahí, desde luego, sin citar a la antigüedad—Mallarmé o cualquiera de los grandes poetas franceses, también vemos que la tradición se ha pasado a Latinoamérica. Encontramos, en el caso de México, poetas como Octavio Paz, que siempre ha puesto atención hacia la creación estética visual. Lo mismo que escritores como Juan García Ponce, que gran parte de su obra la ha dedicado en este sentido. 

The debate covers two opposing stances in Latin American visual arts, which resemble ideological proposals about what the ideal model of artistic creation should be for Latin Americans. In reality, the question of whether or not there is a truly Latin American art is unnecessary, because this art—whatever its characteristics may be—already exists, and therefore is both authentic and its own. The problem lies in the difficulty of describing it outside of ideological proposals about whether it is desirable or undesirable.

From the standpoint of the Latin American artist's attitude toward their society, it becomes easier to homogenize the characteristics of what we wish to call Latin American artistic identity. It is undeniable that, either deeply or superficially, since the 1920s Latin American artists have possessed a socio-political consciousness that leads them to identify and highlight the obstacles to recognizing themselves.

From these obstacles to being, from this awareness of internal or external colonialism, arises the need to always consider or situate art in relation to social problems.

In this context, it is important to analyze an idea by Marta Traba—the concept of an art of resistance as the valid form of art for Latin America. For Marta Traba, the art of resistance is, simply put, the rejection of avant-garde terrorisms. To generalize and say that we are agrarian and underdeveloped, and therefore tied to and condemned in painting to a certain type of sophisticated figuration, is to fall—perhaps unconsciously—into the feared lack of freedom for the artist.

If we are already speaking of resistance, I think it is important, in this case, to cite the Cuban example. Whether we like it or not, they are the first in Latin America to attempt to reconcile or integrate the artist into the making of a revolutionary art. In this case, the premise for carrying out this project is not to dictate or emphasize how the forms should look, but rather to propose a new concept of aesthetics—not only with emphasis on the object itself, but in proposing aesthetics as a vital interaction between art, artist, and people.

Thank you. It seems that everyone is promoting their own cause, and I think that’s perfectly fine. On the list I have of those requesting to speak was Bayón, but I think someone else is asking to speak—Szyszlo.

A poet like César Vallejo, for example—who is one of the greatest poets in the Spanish language—is still a privilege of the Spanish-speaking group, and until very recently, the privilege of a very small group within that enormous Spanish-speaking population. So this—despite being little known—does not make Vallejo any less universal. I also wanted, please, to make another remark about what Rita said regarding Cuban art. I have evident sympathy for the Cuban revolution.

The other day I was on a panel in Lima. In Lima, people are now talking a lot about these things. I was on a panel in Lima where they were talking to me about revolutionary Cuban art. My response was, “Art made by painters from revolutionary Cuba”. Because revolutionary art it is not. At least what I saw in Havana—the art you see in Cuba now—is rather derivative, to use the phrase, of operational models from the West. I saw portraits of Martí done in the style of Warhol, etc. Which I think is important to emphasize.

Thank you very much, Szyszlo. [applause] The wish of this panel is for people who have so far remained silent whether due to shyness or modesty—not to remain so, and to try, as much as possible, to have those who speak frequently say as little as possible, to balance the show a bit. Since Rita Guibert, from the Aesthetic Research Institute of the University of Mexico, has made direct reference to some concepts expressed by Marta Traba, I would ask Marta Traba, if she has something to say, to respond—and if she does have something to say, to say it very briefly, passionately. Yes, but very briefly, please.

These two ideas now lead to a third point, which is the problem of models. To the extent that I understand art as construction of reality, I understand it in the sense that I have identified—especially in my country, Brazil, but also as a very consistent and widespread tendency throughout Latin America—the idea of constructive art. In Brazil’s specific case, the idea of constructive art is closely tied to the debate over our nationality.

At that same time, the art being made in Brazil was art of a constructive character, which was also seeking what is specific and proper to art itself. There was a coincidence between the search for nationality and the search for specificity in the field of art. I also notice that this is a near-constant in many countries, not just those that didn’t have pre-Columbian art. I note, for example, that in Colombia—and even in Mexico—there is today an art with a constructive basis.

This idea of what constitutes constructive art is very ambiguous. Each of us probably thinks of something different. If we had the works here—if we had slides—we could define a bit more clearly what this idea of constructive art is. For now, that would be my contribution. [applause] 

Thank you very much, Frederico. Yes, it’s true, perhaps the debates we are having are very abstract, and the idea of projecting a slide to say what constructive art is may itself be very constructive. I think Damián Bayón had something to say—although since he has already chaired a session and talked everyone’s ear off, let him be brief.

No, I wanted to address—precisely—the accusation made against us yesterday, of being too abstract and rhetorical. That was the word used by a distinguished visitor, and she was right. Judging from the outside, I see that we always limp on the same foot. I propose something very concrete, and I feel like asking the members of the panel—Juan Acha, Carlos—what they think of the case. It’s the case of Julio Le Parc, in my opinion the most imaginative of the Argentine kinetic artists in Paris, who, between 1958 and 1968, with his group Recherche d’Art Visuel, carried out a series of truly extraordinary experiments, full of imagination and visual interest.

Already in 1966, at the Venice Biennale, where he surprisingly won the painting prize—because they didn’t know which prize to give him, but clearly wanted to give him one—I remember being puzzled, because some of the elements resembled a carnival, but there were still those striped glasses and a bunch of things that strained the eyes and transformed reality in a very interesting way.

Le Parc returns to Paris; he’s offered to stay in Cuba but does not accept. He has every right not to, and I don’t blame him. Once back, he surprisingly begins to produce completely flat, geometric works—almost like printed ones—large waves of aggressive colors. Being a renowned artist, he doesn’t lose his place at the Denise René gallery, keeps selling those works, and continues to exhibit worldwide, living off his past fame.

Now, I want to pose to all of you, as I ask myself, the enigma of Le Parc. What happened? Did his kinetic vein run dry? Did his political ideas influence his change? When he had the chance to set up a workshop in Cuba, where he would have been very well received—and perhaps by now we’d have a Cuban kinetic school—he chose not to do it. And now he takes refuge in forms that seem more archaic in the history of geometry and kineticism. These are the questions I pose to my peers, to see if together we can solve this enigma. That’s all.

This is literally information. I had a letter the day before I came here, from Guillermo Nuñez, who was a chileno, who was imprisoned for 10 months and tortured, and finally got to Paris. About a week after he got to Paris he was invited to Venezia along with a number of other artists, including Le Parc, and they worked. They did murals on the docks, for the dock workers, with the dock workers, according to this letter. They were a very mixed group of artists, including social realists and figurative artists, semi-abstract artists, and Le Parc. 

El debate cubre dos posturas opuestas en las artes visuales latinoamericanas que asemejan propuestas ideológicas sobre lo que debería ser un modelo ideal de la creación artística para los latinoamericanos. En realidad, la pregunta sobre si existe o no un arte latinoamericano propio no es necesaria, porque este arte, sean cuáles fueran las características, ya existe, por lo tanto, es propio y es auténtico. El problema reside en las dificultades para describirlo fuera de las propuestas ideológicas de su deseabilidad o indeseabilidad. 

Desde un punto de vista de la actitud del artista latinoamericano frente a su sociedad, es más simple homogeneizar características de esto que se quiere llamar la identidad del arte latinoamericano. Es indudable que, profunda o superficialmente, existe desde los años 20 en los artistas latinoamericanos, una conciencia político-social que los lleva a identificar y señalar los obstáculos para reconocerse a sí mismos. 

De estos obstáculos para ser, de esta conciencia del coloniaje interno o externo, surge la necesidad de considerar o de situar al arte siempre en relación con la problemática social. 

En este contexto, es importante analizar una idea de Marta Traba, el concepto de un arte de la resistencia como el válido para América Latina. El arte de la resistencia es para Marta Traba, rápidamente dicho, el rechazo de los terrorismos de vanguardia. Generalizar y decir que somos agropecuarios y subdesarrollados, por lo tanto, atados y condenados, en la pintura, a un cierto tipo de figuración sofisticada, cae, quizás inconscientemente, en la temida falta de libertad para el artista. 

Si ya estamos hablando de resistencia, creo que es importante, en este caso, citar el ejemplo cubano. Nos guste o no, son los primeros en América Latina que tratan de conciliar o integrar al artista para la realización de un arte revolucionario. En este caso, las premisas para la realización de este proyecto no es dictar o enfatizar en cómo deben ser las formas, sino plantear un nuevo concepto de la estética, no solo con énfasis en el objeto en sí, sino en proponer la estética como una interacción vital entre arte, artista y pueblo. 

Gracias. Cada quien, parece ser, que se echa agua su molino, me parece muy bien. En la lista que yo tengo de solicitantes para intervenir estaba Bayón, pero creo que ahí me están pidiendo la palabra, Szyszlo. 

Un poeta como César Vallejo, por ejemplo, con ser uno de los más grandes poetas de la lengua española, es todavía privilegio del grupo de habla hispánica, y hasta hace muy poco, privilegio de un grupo muy pequeño de este enorme grupo de gente que habla en español, o sea que esto, a pesar de ser poco conocido, no hace menos universal a Vallejo. Quería, por favor, hacer otra atingencia a lo que ha dicho Rita sobre arte cubano. Yo tengo simpatía evidente por la revolución cubana. 

El otro día estaba en un panel en Lima. En Lima ahora se habla mucho de estas cosas. Estaba en un panel en Lima en que me hablaban de arte revolucionario cubano. Mi respuesta era, "Arte hecho por pintores de Cuba revolucionaria". Porque arte revolucionario no es. Por lo menos lo que yo vi en La Habana, el arte que se ve en Cuba ahora es un arte más bien derivado, para usar la frase, de modelos operativos de occidente. Vi retratos de Martí hechos a la manera de Warhol, etc. Que me parece importante subrayar. 

Muchas gracias, Szyszlo. [aplausos] El deseo de esta mesa sería que intervinieran personas que hasta ahora por razones de timidez o por razones de modestia no han intervenido—y tratar, en lo posible, de que las personas que aparecen con frecuencia hablen lo menos posible, para equilibrar un poco el show. Dado que Rita Guibert, del Instituto de Investigación Estética de la Universidad de México, ha hecho referencia directa a unos conceptos vertidos por Marta Traba. Le pediría a Marta Traba que si tiene algo que decir contestara, y si tiene algo que decir que lo diga muy brevemente, apasionadamente. Sí, pero muy brevemente, por favor. 

Estas dos ideas me llevan ahora a un tercer punto, que es el problema de los modelos. En la medida en que entiendo el arte como construcción de la realidad, lo entiendo en tanto he identificado, especialmente en mi país, Brasil, pero también como una tendencia que me parece bastante constante y amplia en toda América Latina, la idea de un arte constructivo. En el caso específico de Brasil, la idea de arte constructivo está muy íntimamente ligada al debate sobre nuestra nacionalidad.

En esa misma época, el arte que se hacía en Brasil era un arte de carácter constructivo, que también busca aquello que es específico y propio del arte. Hay una coincidencia entre la búsqueda de una nacionalidad y la búsqueda de una especificidad en el campo del arte. Noto también que esto es una constante en varios países, y no solamente en aquellos que no tuvieron un arte precolombino. Noto, por ejemplo, que en Colombia, noto que en el propio México hay hoy en día un arte de base constructiva.

Esa idea de lo que es arte constructivo es muy ambigua; probablemente cada quien piensa una cosa distinta. Si tuviéramos aquí los trabajos, si tuviéramos diapositivas, podríamos precisar un poco más qué es esa idea de arte constructivo. Por el momento, esa sería mi intervención. [aplausos]

Muchas gracias, Frederico. Sí, es cierto, tal vez los debates que estamos llevando a cabo sean muy abstractos, y que la idea de proponer la proyección de una diapositiva para decir que es una arte constructiva puede ser muy constructiva. Creo que Damián Bayón tenía algo que decir, aunque como él ya ha sido presidente de mesa y ha hablado hasta por los codos, que sea breve. 

No, yo quería, justamente, la acusación que nos hicieron ayer de ser demasiado abstractos y retóricos, fue la palabra empleada por una distinguida visitante, tiene razón. Yo juzgando desde afuera veo que cojeamos siempre del mismo pie. Yo propongo una cosa muy concreta, y tengo ganas de preguntarles a los miembros del panel, a Juan Acha, a Carlos, lo que piensan del caso. Es el caso de Julio Le Parc, para mí, el más imaginativo de los argentinos cinéticos de París, que entre el año 58 y 68, con su grupo de Recherche d'Art Visuel, había realizado una serie de experiencias realmente extraordinarias, llenas de imaginación y de interés plástico. 

Ya en el año 66, en la Bienal de Venecia en donde ganó el premio, sorprendentemente, el premio de pintura, porque no sabían qué premio darle, pero evidentemente querían darle un premio. Me acuerdo, me desconcertó porque había unos elementos que parecían de feria de diversiones, pero todavía estaban aquellos anteojos con rayitas y una cantidad de cosas que perjudicaban la vista y que transformaban la realidad de una manera muy interesante. 

Le Parc vuelve a París, le ofrecen quedarse en Cuba, no acepta. Tiene todo el derecho de hacerlo, por otra parte, no se lo reprocho. Vuelto, empieza sorprendentemente a producir unas obras completamente planas, geométricas, pero como de tipo impreso, unas grandes ondas de colores agresivos. Siendo un artista que tiene su fama, no pierde su puesto en la galería Denise René y sigue vendiendo esas obras y sigue exponiendo en el mundo, viviendo de su fama pasada. 

Ahora, yo quiero plantear a todos ustedes, como me planteo yo, el enigma de Le Parc ¿Qué pasó? Porque se agotó en él esa vena cinética, sus ideas políticas tuvieron que ver con su cambio, cuando pudo formar un taller en Cuba, en donde hubiera sido muy bien recibido, y quizá ahora tuviéramos también una escuela cinética cubana, no lo quiso hacer y ahora se refugia en unas formas que parecen más antiguas en la historia de la geometría y del cinetismo. Son preguntas que yo hago a mis congéneres, a ver si entre algunos podemos contestar ese enigma, nada más. 

Esto es literalmente información. Recibí una carta el día antes de venir aquí, de Guillermo Núñez, un chileno, que fue encarcelado por 10 meses y torturado, y que finalmente logró llegar a París. Aproximadamente una semana después de su llegada a París, fue invitado a Venecia junto con otros artistas, incluido Le Parc, y trabajaron. Hicieron murales en los muelles, para los trabajadores portuarios, con los trabajadores portuarios, según esta carta. Era un grupo muy diverso de artistas, incluyendo realistas sociales y artistas figurativos, artistas semiabstractos y Le Parc.

I'm puzzled why we're never making any differentiation between the critic and the historian. Because I think a number of the people who are speaking here, in truth are working as our historians and I believe that is a different role than the one of the critic. Perhaps by emphasizing more the role of the historian and less of the critic, it helps to create a framework within which to put this whole question of the development of Latin American contemporary art, which we are discussing. Thank you.

I just want to make a brief note, more like sharing information. It’s about an art that really should have been discussed in this session. I’m referring to a very new phenomenon in the southwestern United States, which exists here in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, and other parts of the U.S. The artists—Mexican-Americans, or more recently called Chicanos by most of them—I believe participate in the same ambiguity that Dr. Manrique referred to, which has existed in Mexico for many generations.

These Chicanos participate in a Mexican tradition and, at the same time, a North American or U.S. tradition, and yet they don’t fully belong to either one. That is, they are neither Mexican nor American, and that’s why they prefer to call themselves Chicanos. I believe this phenomenon deserves much more recognition than it has received, both in this country and in Mexico. I think that in Latin America people should realize that this is a very important phenomenon with a lot of merit, and I hope that in the years to come there will be opportunities to present exhibitions and perhaps for Chicano artists to cross the border and go further south. I believe all of this is because we have thought more in terms of national borders rather than cultural ones. That’s why Chicanos have been left out of such considerations. I think my time is up, and I want to thank you for that.

The point raised about Chicano art is very interesting, but unfortunately it falls outside the context of this session. I would now like to give the floor to Mr. Tamayo, so that he may offer a general summary of what we’ve discussed so far.

There’s another point that I think should also be taken into account, and that is the theme that has been discussed here—particularly by the young Cuban woman who spoke to us about a movement beginning in Cuba. Oh, she’s Mexican, sorry. [laughter] The idea is to create revolutionary art. As was mentioned earlier, in Mexico this was done many years ago—art made by revolutionaries, as our friend Felguérez said, but not revolutionary art. So much so that today, that kind of art is completely nonexistent in my country. It served as a tool for propaganda and was used by politicians because it suited their political agenda.

I always say, when it comes to that type of Mexican painting that tried to liberate the people through muralism, that peasants have only triumphed in Mexico within the murals. [laughter] [applause]
